Book excerpt: This report provides guidance to public officials and engineers considering the replacement of a deficient or obsolete bridge with a low-water stream crossing (LWSC). An LWSC is a structure that is occasionally overtopped by floodwaters and is likely to be impassable for a few hours or days in a normal year. LWSC structures include unvented fords, vented fords, low-water culverts, low-water bottomless culverts, and low-water bridges. LWSCs are sometimes constructed to keep very low-volume roads open where the cost of a normal bridge cannot be justified. The lower initial cost of an LWSC must be balanced against maintenance requirements and safety considerations. Site assessment guidelines consider traffic, access, roadway, stream, and regulatory issues. LWSC options can be limited by conditions on federal and state-issued permits, particularly those concerning threatened and endangered species and historic resources, and by local floodplain regulations. Key design considerations are presented for LWSCs in general and for unvented fords, vented fords, and low-water bridges in particular. These considerations include roadway design issues, stream hydrology, aquatic organism passage at low flows, and debris passage and scour and erosion protection at high flows. Nine recent LWSC projects in Kansas are examined in detail. The structures include an unvented ford, a hybrid-type ford, three vented fords, a low-water box culvert, a low-water bottomless culvert, and two low-water bridges. Eight of the projects are completed and one has been delayed by regulatory issues. Each case study includes a description of the structure and relevant information on the crossing history; road and traffic characteristics; stream characteristics and hydrology; governmental permits and regulatory issues; project costs; and maintenance requirements and performance to date.

Book excerpt: Commonly used Low Water Stream Crossings (LWSC) of different types are described and the characteristics of their efficient design are discussed. Selection factors for LWSCs are listed, along with a set of general and specific design considerations. A method, based on economic risk analysis, is recommended for the final selection and design of fords, vented fords and low water bridges. Design examples are provided for each of the three structures. This Design Guide emphasizes the application aspects and complements the volume: "Design and Construction of Low Water Stream Crossings", FHWA/RD-82/163, which stresses theoretical concepts and views.

Case histories of existing structures are documented and an approach to decision criteria and economic analysis on which decisions can be made are included. Hydraulics of LWSC and the means of erosion protection are also discussed to the extent they are applicable to the structures of this type. This report, which emphasizes theoretical views and concepts, complements a second volume, "Design Guide: Low Water Stream Crossings", FHWA/RD-82/164, which stresses application and computations.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 29 (thesis year 1984) a total of 12,637 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 202 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 29 reports theses submitted in 1984, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improperly designed stream crossings may prohibit movement of stream fishes by creating physical or behavioral barriers and may alter the form and function of stream ecosystems. A mark-recapture and geomorphological study was conducted to evaluate fish passage and stream morphology at three types of vehicle crossings (compared to control sites) located on streams in the Flint Hills of Northeast Kansas. We investigated five concrete box culverts, five low-water crossings (concrete slabs vented by one or multiple culverts), and two single corrugated culverts. A total of 6,433 fish were marked April to May 2007 and 785 were recaptured June to August 2007. Fish passage occurred at all crossing types. Upstream movement of recaptured fish was higher for box culvert reaches (53%) than at controls (41%), but upstream movement of recaptured fish was higher at controls (41.1%) than at crossing reaches (19.1%) for low-water crossings. Control sites had more species in common upstream and downstream than did crossings. There was reduced overall abundance of fish upstream at low-water crossings, commonly percids and centrarchids. A comparison of channel and road crossing dimensions showed that box culverts and corrugated culverts would be more effective than low-water crossings at transporting water, sediments, and debris during bankfull flows, and providing fish passage at base flows. Upstream passage of Topeka shiner (Notropis topeka), green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus), red shiner (Cyprinella lutrensis), and Southern redbelly dace (Phoxinus erythrogaster) was tested through three simulated crossing designs (box culverts, round corrugated culverts, and natural rock) across 11 different water velocities (0.1 m/s to 1.1 m/s) in an experimental stream. Upstream movement did not differ among designs, except natural rock crossings had lower movement than box or corrugated culverts for red shiners. A greater proportion of Topeka shiners moved upstream at higher velocities. These results suggest that crossing type affects fish passage and the morphology of the stream, although water velocity in different crossing designs alone may not be a determining factor in fish passage. Low-water crossings had the greatest impact on fish community and movement, but barriers to fish movement are likely caused by other variables (e.g. perching). Use of properly designed crossing structures has great promise in conserving critical stream habitat and preserving native fish communities. All crossings that were evaluated passed fish, although they may have passed around culverts during high water. None of the culverts tested appeared to be complete barriers. The design of this study did not allow us to determine the exact times when passage occurred, nor do we understand the degree of passage necessary (i.e., can fish populations be sustained by seasonal fish passage and connectivity?) to maintain a healthy and diverse fish population.
