Book excerpt: This handbook provides full coverage of the most recent and advanced topics in scheduling, assembling researchers from all relevant disciplines to facilitate new insights. Presented in six parts, these experts provides introductory material, complete with tutorials and algorithms, then examine classical scheduling problems. Part 3 explores scheduling models that originate in areas such as computer science, operations research. The following section examines scheduling problems that arise in real-time systems. Part 5 discusses stochastic scheduling and queueing networks, and the final section discusses a range of applications in a variety of areas, from airlines to hospitals.

Book excerpt: This document considers task systems modeled by directed acyclic graphs in which nodes represent tasks and arcs express precedence constraints, and each task can be computed by a processor in one unit of time. It is known that if there are only two processors or if the graph is a tree, then there are polynormal time algorithms for scheduling the graph in minimum time, but in general the minimum time scheduling problem is NP-complete. The communication cost of a schedule is the number of pairs (p, x) such that processor p does not compute task x but computes an immediate successor of x ; that is, the result of x must be communicated to p. I consider the problem of finding schedules that minimize finishing time and among those, finding schedules that minimize communication. That the problem with two processors on an arbitrary graph is NP-complete. The problem with arbitrarily many processors on a tree is also NP-complete. The case of two processors on a tree is open in general, but tight bounds for two processors on the indirected complete ternary tree of height k : for minimum time, communication k-log3k + 3 is achievable, and communication k-log3k + 1 is necessary.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "Inspired by the popularity of anytime algorithms in solving complex real world problems, we define a class of scheduling problems. In addition to the normal resource constrained project scheduling assumptions, each activity in a project has a quality profile with an anytime property, which means that it can be stopped at any time and the quality of the output is proportional to its duration. Instead of finishing all activities as fast as possible, the goal of scheduling is to maximize the sum of qualities given a hard project due data. We formulate this quality maximization problem as a constraint-based optimization problem, analyze its complexity and present a precedence constraint posting procedure for generating a schedule with a good quality sum. Different constraint posting heuristics are evaluated based on the solution they can produce, CPU time and the number of posted constraints."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mobile robots and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have enabled great potentials and a large space for ubiquitous and pervasive applications. Robotics and WSNs have mostly been considered as separate research fields and little work has investigated the marriage between these two technologies. However, these two technologies share several features, enable common cyber-physical applications and provide complementary support to each other. The primary objective of book is to provide a reference for cutting-edge studies and research trends pertaining to robotics and sensor networks, and in particular for the coupling between them. The book consists of five chapters. The first chapter presents a cooperation strategy for teams of multiple autonomous vehicles to solve the rendezvous problem. The second chapter is motivated by the need to improve existing solutions that deal with connectivity prediction, and proposed a genetic machine learning approach for link-quality prediction. The third chapter presents an architecture for indoor navigation using an Android smartphone for guiding a variety of users, from sighted to the visually impaired, to their intended destination. In chapter four, the authors deal with accurate prediction modeling of ocean currents for underwater glider navigation. In chapter five, the authors discuss the challenges and limitations of RSS-based localization mechanisms and propose, EasyLoc, an autonomous and practical RSS-based localization technique that satisfies ease of deployment and implementation.
