Book excerpt: Chapter 3 exploits the unique highly hydrophobic and large light absorption properties of the BH4 dye to answer the stability and wettability issues faced in solar driven water splitting applications. The unprecedented stability of the BH4 dye on NiO allowed the first use of low pH electrolytes to be used in p-type water splitting DSPECs. The ability to use acidic electrolytes likewise allowed the use of an acidically soluble and active earth abundant [Mo3S4]4+ homogeneous catalyst for the first time. Chapter 4 further utilizes the aqueous stability of the BH series dyes for aqueous based DSSCs. Utilizing water as the electrolyte solvent makes the already cost effective tandem DSSCs even more economical and environmentally friendly. The BH2 dye was used to fabricate entirely aqueous p-type DSSCs using the iodide/triiodide redox for the first time. The BH2 dye displayed aqueous p-type DSSC photocurrents greater than most non-aqueous p-type DSSCs and were stable for up to 4 months with no sign of photocathode degradation. Furthermore, aqueous tandem DSSC were fabricated with a completely aqueous electrolyte with all earth abundant materials with no use of any precious metals. Chapter 5 introduces a new dye (KC2) designed specifically for aqueous based dye sensitized electrodes. From what was learned in Chapters 2 – 4, there exists a dilemma between aqueous dye stability and wettability in the form of hydrophobicity. A novel layered amphiphilic structure is proposed to balance both the aqueous stability and wettability of dye sensitized films. The new amphiphilic KC2 dye was synthesized and fully characterized. It was compared to its purely hydrophobic analog (BH2) in all aspects including electrochemical, photo-physical and device performance properties. The KC2 dye doubles the aqueous wettability of sensitized NiO films and displays excellent stability identical to that of the hydrophobic BH2 dye. Finally from what was discovered from the KC2 dye, a new amphiphilic structure is proposed for further exploration. Chapter 6 summarizes the common experimental procedures and details used throughout the dissertation. More specific procedures relevant to each chapter are discussed in each corresponding chapter introduction.

This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) is one of the emerging thin-film photovoltaic technologies. Advantages come from the low cost and easier fabrication process. The realistic overall conversion efficiency already made the commercial availability a reality. It is possible the use of natural dyes extracted from plants in DSSC fabrication to substitute synthetic dyes, which requires complex fabrication processes and the use of toxic and scarce materials, like ruthenium. Natural dye-sensitized solar cells (NDSSC) are still in an early stage, with many research groups working hard to overcome efficiency and stability issues. Natural dyes are cheap, highly available, environmentally safe and easy to extract. Nature has so much to offer to humankind, each plant is unique, with characteristics developed during million of years of evolution. Each biome has an enormous number of species readily available for study. Among them, Brazilian forests are in an outstanding position, with a gigantic quantity of species with hidden opportunities. This work aims to inspire other researchers to explore this field and find in nature new answers for a clean energy demanding world. It is shown the basic aspects of NDSSC study and practical research, from laboratory construction to cells fabrication. After a brief introduction about PV technologies, DSSC is deeper discussed based on a literature review. Physical and electrochemical aspects are presented in details. Natural dyes specificities and application in DSSC are then discussed also based on other researchers findings. With a well-established theoretical basis, this work focus then on the development of a NDSSC fabrication protocol, presenting the most important tests and results achieved. A special highlight is given to the design and fabrication of a solar simulator from scratch. Having the infrastructure, equipments and protocol defined, the fabrication of NDSSC based on Brazilian plants was possible, including plants naturally originated in the country: blackberry, quaresmeira and embaúba-vermelha, and two other non-native species due to their economically important role, of which Brazil is currently the world leader producer, they are: arabica coffee and sugarcane. The found cells efficiencies for all studied plants dyes are in the range of other important research publications, even for the simplified and low cost proposed protocol, which validates the solutions and techniques used. Coffea arabica (arabica coffee) provided the best performance, reaching 0.44% overall conversion efficiency, with no special commonly used chemical treatment, co-adsorbent or purification, such as: TiCl4, organic acids, chromatography and lyophilization. It is hoped this work contribute for the development of an even greener energy generation from sunlight.

Book excerpt: While the protection offered by BH dyes affords photocathodes with long-term stability and high photocurrents in low pH aqueous conditions, p-DSPEC devices sensitized with BH4 have achieved less than ideal faradaic efficiencies attributed to catalyst decomposition. Thus, another new dye, cat-i, was designed and synthesized, featuring a pyridine moiety, which gives rise to the formation of a stable dye-catalyst supramolecule via axial coordination of the dye to the Co center of a well-known water reduction catalyst, Co(dmgBF2)2. Further, this dye-catalyst complexation could facilitate electron transfer from the photoexcited dye to the cobaloxime catalyst. When used as a sensitizer in a p-DSPEC device, the cat-i-cobaloxime complex exhibits significantly higher photocurrents than cat-i alone and produces H2 with 87% Faradaic efficiency.

Book excerpt: The threat of global climate change is highly concerning as societies continue to rely heavily on fossil fuels to fulfill the world's energy needs. It is pertinent to look to alternative energy sources to meet the increasing global energy requirements. Solar energy may be a viable option to meet electricity demands and is an area of research worth pursuing. Titanium dioxide-based dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) provide a promising alternative to high cost silicon-based solar cells. In order to achieve cost/efficiency ratios in DSSCs necessary for them to compete with fossil fuels we set out to explore the use of first row transition metal-based chromophores. A series of iron(II) terpyridyl complexes have been designed to gain a better understanding of the ultrafast dynamics of potential chromophores in DSSCs. Iron(II) polypyridyl complexes inherently have short-lived charge transfer excited states. New terpyridyl ligands have been prepared, in which steric hinderance has been introduced to impose strain along a torsional coordinate in the iron(II) adducts for the analysis of a proposed relaxation pathway of the charge-transfer excited state. Details on the development of the synthesis of these compounds are presented along with full characterization of the ligands and iron(II) adducts. The fundamental understanding that we hope to gain from the forthcoming analysis of these complexes is pertinent toward the development of iron(II) based sensitizers in DSSCs.

Book excerpt: With the increase in fossil fuel costs and the limitability of readily available reserves, the need for research in renewable energy sources is crucial. Organic solar cells can be a convenient and low-cost approach to harvesting solar energy using readily available and often recyclable materials. Traditional silicon solar cells have shown high reliability, but installation costs are prohibitive. Dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are a promising alternative at a fraction of the cost. DSSCs use dyes with high quantum efficiency adsorbed on a titanium dioxide film to absorb light and transfer electrons. The dye is regenerated by a counter electrode and electrolyte, improving device stability. Our group has been exploring inexpensive, soluble, light stable azo dyes used in the textile industry for light absorption. Our goal is to generate solution processable DSSCs which can be spray painted directly on a roof or large area surface. By making device fabrication inexpensive, we decrease the need for high power conversion efficiency (PCE). Traditional silicon cells have a PCE around 13% which has been matched by DSSCs with carefully designed dyes. The synthesis, electronics, and solar cell device characteristics of several azo dyes will be presented.
