Book excerpt: The long-pulse induction linac is considered for the first stage of a two-stage free electron laser (FEL) oscillator. This research effort studies several effects that can significantly influence the performance of such an FEL. The FEL is parameterized in a set of dimensionless variables that can summarize several physical effects without the use of detailed calculation as well as relating the physical to other FEL designs. A waveguide analysis shows the primary modifications on the FEL interaction, electron beam distribution functions representing energy spread and emittance are evaluated in the high gain regime, and a multimode analysis of the trapped-particle instability is performed for parameters describing the FEL. The research in intended to extend the simulation theory of high-gain FEL oscillators. In the two-stage FEL, the first-stage uses a normal FEL interaction with the usual static undulator to produce an intense electromagnetic wave in a high-power resonator. The wavelength in the first stage is around 1 cm, and provides the periodic undulator in the second stage of the interaction. The electromagnetic undulator has a shorter wavelength with a more intense field than can be attained from a static magnetic field, and allows the second stage to reach short optical wavelengths with a low energy electron beam. Book excerpt: In this paper we report on multi-physics, multi-billion macroparticle simulation of beam transport in a free electron laser (FEL) linac for future light source applications. The simulation includes a self-consistent calculation of 3D space-charge effects, short-range geometry wakefields, longitudinal coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) wakefields, and detailed modeling of RF acceleration and focusing. We discuss the need for and the challenges associated with such large-scale simulation. Applications to the study of the microbunching instability in an FEL linac are also presented.

We describe key features of a parallel macroparticle simulation code including three-dimensional (3D) space-charge effects, short-range structure wake fields, longitudinal coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) wake fields, and treatment of radiofrequency (RF) accelerating cavities using maps obtained from axial field profiles. A macroparticle up-sampling scheme is described that reduces the shot noise from an initial distribution with a smaller number of macroparticles while maintaining the global properties of the original distribution. We present a study of the microbunching instability which is a critical issue for future FELs due to its impact on beam quality at the end of the linac. Using parameters of a planned FEL linac at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), we show that a large number of macroparticles (beyond 100 million) is needed to control numerical shot noise that drives the microbunching instability. We also explore the effect of the longitudinal grid on simulation results. We show that acceptable results are obtained with around 2048 longitudinal grid points, and we discuss this in view of the spectral growth rate predicted from linear theory. As an application, we present results from simulations using one billion macroparticles of the FEL linac under design at LBNL. We show that the final uncorrelated energy spread of the beam depends not only on the initial uncorrelated energy spread but also depends strongly on the shape of the initial current profile. By using a parabolic initial current profile, 5 keV initial uncorrelated energy spread at 40 MeV injection energy, and improved linac design, those simulations demonstrate that a reasonable beam quality can be achieved at the end of the linac, with the final distribution having about 100 keV energy spread, 2.4 GeV energy, and 1.2 kA peak current.

Book excerpt: The collective interaction in a free electron laser with combined helical wiggler and uniform axial guide fields is presented in the linearized regime. The analysis involves a perturbation of the Vlasov-Maxwell equations about the constant-velocity helical trajectories, and the general driving currents are derived for this configuration. The complete dispersion equation is then obtained for a monoenergetic beam. Analytic solutions are obtained in the strong pump and a space-charge dominated regimes, and an extensive numerical analysis is presented for a wide range of operating parameters. The results indicate that substantial enhancements in the gain are possible when the relativistic axial gyrofrequency is comparable to the Free Electron Laser Doppler Upshift. In addition, there is a range of parameters for which the ponderomotive potential acts to destabilize the electron beam. In this regime, we find both unstable electrostatic beam modes and largely electromagnetic modes with broad bandwidths. (Author).

Basic FEL physics is reviewed, using a previously developed classical theory. Numerical simulations based on this theory are described, and numerous examples show how they have been used to increase understanding of existing FELs and to help plan new experiments. Single-mode simulations that follow the evolution of a single-frequency plane wave provide insight into important physical effects in FELs. Results show how these simulations are used to evaluate new FEL designs such as inverse-tapered and step-tapered undulators. Longitudinal multimode simulations model plane waves using finite-length electron and optical pulses. These simulations are used to study coherence evolution in various FEL designs, and to explain effects such as limit-cycle behavior. Transverse multimode simulations that allow for the finite transverse dimensions of the optical wavefronts include the effects of optical mode distortion. These simulations are currently being used to design short Rayleigh length optical cavities that are less sensitive to mirror damage. Four- dimensional simulations are also described, which follow the optical wavefront in x, y, z, and t, including the effects of multiple longitudinal and transverse modes. These simulations are computationally intensive, but may play an important role in the design of future high-power FELs.

Book excerpt: Free electron lasers and high energy physics accelerators have increased the demand for very high brightness electron beam sources. This paper describes the design of an accelerator which can produce beams of greater than 7 × 1011 A/m2 (brightness = 2*1/{var epsilon}2, with {var epsilon} = 90% normalized emittance = 4* rms emittance). The beam emittance growth in the accelerator is minimized by the following: producing a short electron bunch in a high gradient rf cavity, using a focusing solenoid to correct the emittance growth due to space charge, and designing the coupling slots between accelerator cavities to minimize quadruple effects. The simulation code PARMELA was modified for this design effort. This modified version uses SUPERFISH output files for the accelerator cavity field, MAFIA output files for the 3-D perturbation fields due to the coupling slots in the accelerator cells, and POISSON output files for the solenoid field in the gun region. The results from simulations are, at 2.3 nC, a peak current of 180 A and a 90% emittance of 9.4 [pi] mm-mmrad. The exit energy from the linac is 20 MeV for both cases. A magnetic pulse compressor can be used to further increase the peak current. 8 refs., 10 figs.

Book excerpt: The Free Electron Laser (FEL) is a candidate for a future close-in weapon system that will provide a longer protective range for missile destruction. The FEL is also tunable to wavelengths that would give good atmospheric transmission and optimal target absorption characteristics at the target. This thesis describes single-mode and multimode simulation results of the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (TJNAF) FEL operating at far infrared wavelengths. The TJNAF FEL uses inverse tapering and is driven by 34.5 MeV and 47.5 MeV energy electron pulses. Steady-state power, weak-field steady state gain, electron beam energy spread and optical spectrum widths were explored as a function of the desyncinonism and tapering rate. The simulations described FEL pulse evolution and short pulse effects. The simulation results have been presented at an International Conference held at Duke University, Durham, NC in August 2000. in addition, the results of damage to Slip-cast Fused Silica samples by the TJNAF FEL, with and without the effect of airflow are analyzed. A comparison with older damage experiments was done in order to develop scaling rules in the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of the linac delivering electron bunches into ten independent soft x-ray free electron lasers (FELs) producing light at 1 nm and longer wavelengths is presented. The bunch repetition rate in the linac is 1 MHz and 100 kHz in each of ten FEL beam lines. Various issues regarding machine layout and lattice, bunch compression, collimation, and the beam switch yard are discussed. Particular attention is given to collective effects. A demanding goal is to preserve both a low beam slice emittance and low slice energy spread during acceleration, bunch compression and distribution of the electron bunches into the array of FEL beamlines. Detailed studies of the effect of the electron beam microbunching caused by longitudinal space-charge forces and coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) have been carried out and their results are presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modeling and simulation have proven invaluable to the design of various systems and planning of many experiments since the free-electron laser was invented in the 1970s. This thesis illustrates methods used for these tasks and for the validation and development of further theory. FEL systems and their components are described, briefly discussing how they fit into design considerations. Basic theory of FEL operation is reviewed, including the resonance condition, FEL wave and pendulum equations, and the concepts of undulator taper, extraction and beam quality. Two computer programs used for FEL simulation (FEL3D/FEL4D, developed at the Naval Postgraduate School, and Ginger, developed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory) are discussed and compared, then applied to specific FEL cases. The cases studied serve to evaluate key performance characteristics of FELs. The final case study directly compares output from the two programs. In addition to this type of physics simulation, computer tools are also vital for component design. Relevant methods are illustrated using the example of an electrostatic cathode test cell and drawings made using the Los Alamos National Laboratories design tool, Poisson Superfish. After reviewing the principles involved and system constraints, a new test cell is designed for use with future NPS experiments. The effects of anodecathode spacing and anode aperture size are examined for two different anode configurations and recommendations are made for future design iterations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new free-electron laser experiment has been designed at NRL to operate at millimeter wavelengths using a collective beam-wave interaction. Critical features of the experiment include an apertured diode which provides a low emittance electron beam, a wiggler magnet with adiabatic entrance and exit, and an operational domain centered around the wiggler-guide field gyroresonnance. With the experiment configured as a superradiant amplifier, the effects of the gyroresonnance on beam dynamics and the beamwave interaction have been studied. Measurements indicate a peak power production of 35 MW at 4 mm with an electronic efficiency of 2.5%. Aspects of the experimental design are discussed, and the results of a parametric study of the power dependence on the fields are presented. Detailed calculations (both analytic and computational) have been performed to analyze the linear and nonlinear effects in the experiment. The results of these calculations are shown to be in good agreement with laboratory measurements.
