Book excerpt: Reflector antennas are widely used in communication satellite systems because they provide high gain at low cost. Offset-fed single paraboloids and dual reflector offset Cassegrain and Gregorian antennas with multiple focal region feeds provide a simple, blockage-free means of forming multiple, shaped, and isolated beams with low sidelobes. Such antennas are applicable to communications satellite frequency reuse systems and earth stations requiring access to several satellites. While the single offset paraboloid has been the most extensively used configuration for the satellite multiple-beam antenna, the trend toward large apertures requiring minimum scanned beam degradation over the field of view 18 degrees for full earth coverage from geostationary orbit may lead to impractically long focal length and large feed arrays. Dual reflector antennas offer packaging advantages and more degrees of design freedom to improve beam scanning and cross-polarization properties. The Cassegrain and Gregorian antennas are the most commonly used dual reflector antennas. A computer program for calculating the secondary pattern and directivity of a generalized dual reflector antenna system was developed and implemented at LeRC. The theoretical foundation for this program is based on the use of physical optics methodology for describing the induced currents on the sub-reflector and main reflector. The resulting induced currents on the main reflector are integrated to obtain the antenna far-zone electric fields. The computer program is verified with other physical optics programs and with measured antenna patterns. The comparison shows good agreement in far-field sidelobe reproduction and directivity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of Reflector Antennas provides information pertinent to the analysis of reflector-antenna systems. This book provides an understanding of how design data have been and can be derived. Organized into four chapters, this book begins with an overview of the history of focusing reflector-antenna systems characterized by a highly variable level of general interest. This text then examines the solutions of the scalar Helmholtz equation in rectangular and spherical coordinates. Other chapters consider antenna performance described in terms of several fundamental properties, including capture area, directivity, gain, beam efficiency, aperture efficiency, polarization, effective noise temperature, and phase center. This book discusses as well the resulting functional dependence between axial ratio and component amplitude, which is the same as that between voltage standing wave ratio and voltage reflection coefficient. The final chapter deals with the role of the special-purpose digital computers. This book is a valuable resource for research and development engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small symmetric dual reflector antennas suffer from low efficiency due to subreflector blockage of the main reflector and subreflector scattering. These can be reduced by slicing the main dish and translating its rotational axis, along with modifying the subreflector geometry. This type of design is usually applied to low-frequency reflectors, but high-frequency analysis techniques are used. Consequently the agreement between measured and computed data is not good as it would be for rigorous solution such as the method of moments. This thesis modifies an existing method of moments computer code to handle the displaced axis geometry, and computes the radiation pattern and the efficiency of this antenna as a function of geometrical and electrical design parameters. Optimum configurations are identified for several feed types. The paraboloidal antenna with a feed at the focus does not allow much control of the power distribution over the aperture surface, except for what can be accomplished by changing the focal length and feed pattern.

The analysis is developed by taking each reflector to be the envelope of its tangent planes. Rather than specifying the phase distribution in the emitted beam, the slopes of the emitted rays were specified. Thus, both the output wave shape and angular distribution of intensity can be specified. Computed examples include variations from both Cassegrain and Gregorian systems, permitting deviation from uniform source distributions and from parallel beam property of conventional systems. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important historical look at the space program's evolvingtelecommunications systems Large Antennas of the Deep Space Network traces the development ofthe antennas of NASA's Deep Space Network (DSN) from the network'sinception in 1958 to the present. It details the evolution of thelarge parabolic dish antennas, from the initial 26-m operation atL-band (960 MHz) through the current Ka-band (32 GHz) systems.Primarily used for telecommunications, these antennas also supportradar and radio astronomy observations in the exploration of thesolar system and the universe. In addition, the author also offersthorough treatment of the analytical and measurement techniquesused in design and performance assessment. Large Antennas of the Deep Space Network represents a vitaladdition to the literature in that it includes NASA-funded researchthat significantly impacts on deep space telecommunications. Partof the prestigious JPL Deep Space Communications and NavigationSeries, it captures fundamental principles and practices developedduring decades of deep space exploration, providing informationthat will enable antenna professionals to replicate radiofrequencies and optics designs. Designed as an introduction for students in the field as well as areference for advanced practitioners, the text assumes a basicfamiliarity with engineering and mathematical concepts andtechnical terms. The Deep Space Communications and Navigation Series is authored byscientists and engineers with extensive experience in astronautics, communications, and related fields. It lays the foundation forinnovation in the areas of deep space navigation and communicationsby disseminating state-of-the-art knowledge in key technologies.
