Following the tendency, we study in detail the design concepts below true-time-delay photonics beamforming networks based on switchable or continuously tunable control. Guided by them, we highlight our NI AWRDE CAD-based simulation experiments in the frequency range of 57,Äì76¬†GHz on design of two 16-channel photonics beamforming networks using true-time-delay approach. In the first scheme of the known configuration, each channel includes laser, optical modulator, and 5-bit binary switchable chain of optical delay lines. The second scheme has an optimized configuration based on only 3-bit binary switchable chain of optical delay lines in each channel, all of which are driven by four lasers with wavelength division multiplexing and a common optical modulator. In the result, the novel structural and cost-efficient configuration of microwave-photonics beamforming network combining wavelength division multiplexing and true-time-delay techniques is proposed and investigated.

In addition, the theoretical background of array antenna multiple-beam steering using ideal models of matrix-based phase shifters and time delay lines is presented including a general analysis of radiation pattern sensitivity to compare updated photonics beamforming networks produced on phase shifter or true-time delay approach. The principles and ways to optimized photonics BFN design are discussed based on the study of photonics BFN scheme including integrated 8√ó8 optical Butler matrix (OBM). All schemes are modeled using VPIphotonics Design Suite and MATLAB software tools. In the result of simulation experiments, the outcome is obtained that both the integrated optical Butler matrix itself and the BFN based on it possess an acceptable quality of beams formation in a particular 5G pico-cell.

Several mm-wave bands have been standardized as part of the 5G new radio frequency range 2 (NR FR2) at 24.25-52.4 GHz. The dissertation addresses the challenges of designing mm-waves ultra-wideband circuits and phased-array systems capable of operating at this widespread spectrum in advanced SiGe technology. The major contributions are the design of receive (Rx), transmit (Tx), and Tx/Rx beamformer chips and the implementation of multi-band 8×1 linear phased-array modules and large-scale 64-element phased array systems. The work in the 15-57 GHz Rx 4×1 beamformer culminated in the design and measurement of ultra-wide-band LNA, phase shifter, VGA, differential to single-ended stage and 4:1 on chip combining network with >40 GHz of bandwidth. Several circuit design techniques are introduced to break the gain-bandwidth (GBW) trade-offs in conventional beamformer designs. A peak electronic gain of 24-25 dB and a 4.7-6.2 dB noise figure is achieved with a 15-57 GHz record 3-dB bandwidth. The mm-wave multi-band transmit phased-array contributions focus on the design of 16-52 GHz 4×1 transmit beamformer chip. The Tx IC has four differential RF beamforming channels each with an active balun, vector modulator based phase shiftier, VGA, and a 2-stage class-AB power amplifier (PA). Circuit techniques employed in this work are selected to fulfill the power and bandwidth requirements with compact area utilization. An 8-element phased-array Tx module is demonstrated achieving broadband performance with +/- 60 degrees scanning capability. The work in the 64-element multi-band transmit and receive phased arrays employs the slat-array architecture using 16×1 linear arrays each has four 4×1 beamformer chips and end-fire tapered-slot antennas. Architecture and system analysis are presented to realize 16-52 GHz multi-standard operation. The 64-element Tx array achieves an EIRP of 50-51.7 dBm and 47.6-49 dBm at Psat and P1dB, respectively, at 24.5-48 GHz.

Book excerpt: This dissertation seeks to demonstrate novel high-frequency electromagnetic (EM) beamforming networks enabled by using additive manufacturing (AM) and electroless metallization techniques. Specifically, the proposed goal of this work is to utilize the "design for additive manufacturing" (DfAM) philosophy to facilitate the morphological/topological development and miniaturization of a wideband beamforming network using these new fabrication techniques to achieve designs that would not be otherwise realizable using traditional fabrication techniques like machining and the use of printed circuit boards (PCBs). The demonstration vehicle for this dissertation begins with a millimeter-wave (mm-wave) filter to explain the advantage of curvilinear architecture with additive manufacturing. The additively manufactured couplers and crossovers based on the circular waveguide follow this. A compact Butler Matrix formed from circular and curvilinear waveguides, cavities, and tuning elements for mm-wave application is then provided. This work includes the analysis, design, fabrication, and experiment of couplers, crossovers, and phase shifters for a four-input, four-output (4x4) Butler Matrix. This Butler Matrix will serve as a beamforming network to steer a co-designed wideband antenna array. The scope of this includes mode transducers and custom thru-reflect-line (TRL) calibration components required for experiments. The first design adopts additive manufacturing techniques to implement a V-band (59-63 GHz) bandpass filter based on spherical resonators with elliptical waveguide feeds. Experiments were conducted on curvilinear architecture, which can mitigate corner radius effects in both electromagnetic performance and additive manufacturing processes compared with the traditional rectangular form. The second design exploits additive manufacturing capabilities based on a 3-dB hybrid directional coupler. The proposed structure with perturbations is engineered to operate in the ISM band from 57 to 64 GHz. The design can provide both 10 dB isolation and return loss and a 90° phase difference between the direct and coupled ports. The experience then extends to additively manufactured wideband and compact couplers and crossover with DfAM to enable mass production for constructing a large-scale beamforming network. The proposed structure can operate between 52 GHz and 65 GHz with a 22.2% fractional bandwidth (FBW). The topologies have good scalability, which can be easily shifted to different frequency bands. This operation range is wider than the FBW requirement for the WiGig band (21.9%). The frequency difference is due to the limitation in the resolution of the stereolithography (SLA) printer and the operation frequency range of the lab equipment. The final design follows the DfAM for electromagnetic by demonstrating the ability to develop compact and beamforming networks and a 4-element antenna array. A systematic approach is presented by engineering both planar and non-planar 4x4 Butler matrices for V-band operation. The resulting Butler matrix is then integrated with a 4-element array of horn antennas, which can eliminate the need for post-fabrication assembly. Results from the experiments and the full-wave simulations are provided for all designs.

Book excerpt: With the paradigm shift from sub-6 GHz to millimeter-wave (mm-Wave) for wireless communications, beamforming becomes essential for mm-Wave access points to mitigate losses. Due to the small wavelength, a compact circuit could accommodate a large number of antenna elements. This favors the principle of beamforming to achieve high array-gain and spatial resolution through a large-scale N × M array. For such antenna frontends, full-digital beamforming circuitry requires N × M RF chains, which is unfeasible and energy inefficient. Likewise, a higher-order mm-Wave analog beamforming network is highly lossy to generate N × M beams. Hybrid beamforming addresses this dilemma by partitioning the beamforming between the analog and digital domains appropriately. For this purpose, the antenna frontend needs to be segmented into subarrays, such that the subarray-based analog beamspace patterns are digitally processed rather than processing element patterns individually. Thus, hybrid beamforming requires a suitable subarray-based N × M multibeam antenna frontend. In this thesis, a study of the subarray antennas is presented for hybrid beamforming operation. A simplified model is considered in which the analog beam-switching is performed in the azimuth plane (H-plane) and the digital beamspace beamforming in the elevation plane (V-plane). This is to reduce the number of RF chains as well as to achieve fine-tuned digital beam-steering in V-plane along with predefined analog switched-beams in H-plane. In this research work, the frequency band of 28 - 32 GHz is considered for prototyping purposes. For practical use at mm-Wave, the microstrip line technology is augmented with the perfect magnetic conductor (PMC) packaging. The fixed-beam and switched-beam subarrays with an order of n × m = 1 × 4, 2 × 2, and 4 × 4 are investigated. A dual-polarized aperture-coupled magneto-electric dipole antenna is designed as a single element with 20% bandwidth, ports' isolation better than 35 dB, cross-polarization less than -25 dB, and gain of 8 dBi. Using this element, a fixed-beam 4 × 4 dual-polarized subarray is designed that maintains a bandwidth of 16.7% at 30 GHz with a maximum gain of 19.3 dBi and symmetrical radiation patterns. The fixed-beam limitation of the 2n × 2m subarray leads to building the efficient switched-beam subarray antennas for hybrid beamforming. For this purpose, a 2 × 2 dual-polarized analog beamforming network is designed for 28-32 GHz. Two identical PMC packaged microstrip line networks, one for each polarization, are designed on a single substrate surface. However, to be processed for beamspace digital beamforming, this topology exhibits physical layout and array factor problems. Thus, further designs are investigated to meet the hybrid beamforming frontend requirements. To this end, as switched-beam subarrays for hybrid beamforming, two PMC packaged 4 × 4 Butler matrices are presented with a longitudinal layout and a folded layout for the end-fire and broadside radiation characteristics, respectively. The former design achieves a 5 GHz (28-33 GHz) bandwidth with return loss and isolation, both better than 15 dB. At 30 GHz, the insertion loss is 0.8 ± 0.3 dB, and antenna-ports' phase distributions are ±45° and ±135°. E-plane-flared horn antennas terminate the Butler matrix antenna-ports as a linear array. The double-ridge gap waveguide horn antenna is designed to reduce the scan loss within a subarray environment. The H-plane fan-beam switching covers ±42° with a maximum gain of 11.7 and 11.2 dBi for the inner (1R) and outer (2R) radiation beams. The latter novel topology of the folded Butler matrix is laid out for a compact tiled planar antenna frontend to accommodate a beamforming network beneath the antenna array's physical footprints. As compared to the conventional longitudinal layout, the size is reduced by more than 50 %. The PCB aperture-coupled antenna elements are integrated within the PMC packaged environment for a broadside radiation characteristic. The folded Butler matrix and antenna element are designed for a bandwidth of 4 GHz (28-32 GHz). The single antenna element's directivity is 5.22 dBi; whereas, for a 1 × 4 switched-beam subarray antenna, the directivities are 11.1 dBi and 10.6 dBi for 1R and 2R beams, respectively. Using Butler matrices-based 1 × 4 switched-beam subarrays, two types of multibeam antenna frontends with order N × M = 4 × 4 are constructed. Post-processing for the digital beamforming is applied over the subarray-based analog beamspaces. The first hybrid beamforming model maintains a scan range of ± 42o in the H-plane and ± 28o in the V-plane with BV × BH = 3 × 4 = 12 beams. Book excerpt: Recent years have witnessed an unprecedented growing demand on wireless data rates, which cannot be satisfied through traditional methods that increase the spectral efficiency of the available spectrum at sub-6GHz frequencies. Fortunately, the wide unlicensed swaths of the spectrum at millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequencies can solve the spectrum scarcity problem. However, mmWave frequencies have quasi-optical line of sight characteristics and high path loss propagation, making communication at extended ranges challenging. Adaptive steering of highly directional antenna beams can overcome the more significant path loss of signals at mmWave frequencies. Therefore, we present a novel 60GHz pattern reconfigurable antenna capable of steering its beams in both the azimuth and the elevation directions. The performance of this steerable antenna was evaluated via ray-tracing simulations of an urban city model. The proposed antenna outperforms a conventional omnidirectional antenna in terms of received power and delay spread characteristics. The narrow beams are a potential solution to the path loss, albeit they are vulnerable to the blockage that causes deep fading of the signal. Solving the indoor blockage problem is critical to effectively using the mmWave spectrum. Experimental results showed that switching to a wider beam with lower gain can partially restore or maintain a communicating link. Effective beam switching and coordinated beam steering can shorten deep fading, which is crucial for mmWave communication systems that are very susceptible to the spatial characteristics of the environment. Directional communication at mmWave frequencies requires the precise alignment of the transmitter and the receiver. Exhaustively scanning all directions to find the optimal link is a time-consuming process that renders directional communication impractical. Low latency beamforming using phased antenna arrays is the key to the practical deployment of the envisioned mmWave Gbps mobile networks. Thus, we used reconfigurable antennas in the sub-6GHz 5G new radio (NR) band to aid codebook-based beam selection in the mmWave band of the 5G-NR. We exploited the congruence between the spatial propagation signatures of signals at both mmWave and sub-6GHz frequencies to reduce the beam search space. The simulation results show a significant reduction in mmWave beam search overhead. We further introduced a novel direction of arrival (DoA) estimation technique using a single RF chain reconfigurable Alford loop antenna (RALA) at sub-6GHz frequencies to allow a rapid optimal beam selection process at mmWave frequencies. This thesis provides a measurement-based DoA estimation method, shows the reduced beam scanning overhead at mmWave frequencies, and designs an SDR-based test-bed for evaluating the proposed novel integrated system.

In this thesis, the optimization of beam training is explored within this context. Specifically, we derive a complexity bound for beam training in the limited scope of an idealized Boolean model, and a class of algorithms which achieve the bound is presented. The performance of these algorithms in non-ideal contexts are evaluated through simulation, and improvements over the existing IEEE 802.11ad standard are demonstrated.
