Book excerpt: The societal reliance upon wireless systems continues to rise due to mobile data interchange. A closer look at the current allocation of 38 GHz 5G Cellular is desperately pointing to, and suggesting the crowding of the frequency spectrum. Therefore this study explores visible light communication as one of the emerging technologies to help meet up with these challenges. The Visible Light Communication (VLC) refers to the communication technology which utilizes the visible light source as a signal transmitter, the air as a transmission medium, and the appropriate photodiode as a signal receiving component. This study appraises the extant literature on Solid State Lighting (SSL), with emphasis on Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). The study highlights the weaknesses of the existing system, the advantages and the significance of the new system using prototype methodology. The study focused on the design and implementation of Visible Light Communication (VLC) circuit for wireless data transmission by designing an analog circuit to integrate with a computer or mobile phone, and then sending some form of data using visible light LEDs from a transmitter, and decoding it with a receiver. The design adopted Beagle-Bone-Black (BBB) as development platform and the circuit was tested with Proteus 8 Professional and data sent reliably and accurately over a short distance at a fair speed which ensures that the initial goals for the functionality of this new system which includes being able to send audio, text or pictures over a distance of approximately 10 meter at a data rate of at least 10 Mbps was achieved. The study shows that visible light communication has the potential to provide high speed data communication with improved energy efficiency and communication security/privacy due to its unique characteristics and advantages. Also, Visible Light Communication can complement the RF-based mobile communication systems in designing high-capacity mobile data networks and can be incorporated in the next generation 5G network. The study therefore recommends error control mechanism and Dimming Support to be integrated in the subsequent studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing demand for extremely high-data-rate communications has urged researchers to develop new communication systems. Currently, wireless transmission with more than one Giga-bits-per-second (Gbps) data rates is becoming essential due to increased connectivity between different portable and smart devices. To realize Gbps data rates, millimeter-wave (MMW) bands around 60 GHz is attractive due to the availability of large bandwidth of 9 GHz. Recent research work in the Gbps data rates around 60 GHz band has focused on short-range indoor applications, such as uncompressed video transfer, high-speed file transfer between electronic devices, and communication to and from kiosk. Many of these applications are limited to 10 m or less, because of the huge free space path loss and oxygen absorption for 60 GHz band MMW signal. This book introduces new knowledge and novel circuit techniques to design low-power MMW circuits and systems. It also focuses on unlocking the potential applications of the 60 GHz band for high-speed outdoor applications. The innovative design application significantly improves and enables high-data-rate low-cost communication links between two access points seamlessly. The 60 GHz transceiver system-on-chip provides an alternative solution to upgrade existing networks without introducing any building renovation or external network laying works.

Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2023 in the subject Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, language: English, abstract: Over the recent few years, optical wireless communication (OWC) has attracted significant attention in both academia and the research community. Contrary to radio frequency (RF) systems, the spatial confinement of the optical beams makes the OWC system a potential system offering higher data rates and secured communication. OWC systems and applications in several areas, such as terrestrial outdoor (free-space optical (FSO) communication), indoor and outdoor visible light communication (VLC), etc. For the terrestrial outdoor FSO systems, spatial diversity techniques are employed over FSO links to enhance the diversity and overall performance. To this end, the spatial diversity techniques corresponding to the state-of-the-art are repetition coding (RC), transmit laser selection (TLS), and orthogonal space-time block codes. Note that, TLS is the optimal transmission scheme in the FSO systems. In this dissertation, we name the conventional TLS scheme as a single TLS (STLS) scheme. However, the performance of the conventional STLS scheme is highly dependent on the feedback errors. On the other side, the outdoor VLC finds applications in vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications, infrastructure-to-vehicle (I2V) communications, etc. Emphasizing the state-of-the-art corresponding to the outdoor V2V-VLC systems, there is a lack of comprehensive modeling and performance investigation under the adverse challenges of the outdoor VLC environment. Moreover, to address the challenges of the next-generation-based outdoor intelligent transportation systems (ITSs), an indoor testbed design for an outdoor I2V-VLC system is still missing. In order to enhance the diversity and overall performance of the terrestrial outdoor FSO systems, the study begins by proposing two novel TLS schemes. We call the proposed schemes as two TLS (TTLS) and modified error-tolerant weighting scheme (METWS). Note that, the conventional STLS scheme gives optimal performance under a perfect feedback scenario. However, its performance degrades significantly under an imperfect feedback scenario. To this end, the two proposed schemes overcome the practical limitations of the conventional STLS scheme. Moreover, we analyze the performance of the two proposed schemes for both perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI)-based communication scenarios. Further, different performance metrics, such as bit error rate (BER), diversity gain, etc., are thoroughly analyzed. Furthermore, to gain more insight

Today one of the most challenging areas for VLSI designers is VLSI circuit and system design for wireless applications. The design of a cellular radio system involves several engineering disciplines ranging from communication theory and digital signal processing to high frequency semiconductor technology and circuit design. Furthermore, the new generation of wireless systems, which includes multimedia, puts severe constraints on performance, cost, size, power and energy. VLSI designers now need to understand both wireless communication and mixed signal design. Mixed Signal VLSI Wireless Design: Circuits and Systems provides the designer with an overview of wireless communication systems, followed by a detailed treatment of related topics such as the mobile radio, digital modulation and schemes, spread spectrum and receiver architectures. The second half of the book deals with VLSI design issues related to mixed-signal design. These include analog-to-digital conversion, transceiver design, digital low-power techniques, amplifier design, phase-locked loops and frequency synthesizers. Mixed Signal VLSI Wireless Design: Circuits and Systems is written for use in advanced level courses and also serves as a basic reference for professional engineers.
