The new TLD consists of a thicker chip in element No. 3 and a thinner, more opaque mylar filter over this same element. The goals were to determine if the new (proposed) TLD would perform significantly different from the old (current) TLD when measuring dose equivalents from beta particles and low energy photons (x-rays) and to find out if changing from the old to the new design would require that modifications be made to the calibration factors currently used in the dose calculation algorithm. To accomplish these objectives, tests were performed using both types of dosimeters placed under identical conditions. Their responses were then compared and analyzed. It was concluded that the new TLDs would allow for the detection of lower levels of radiation and give more precise readouts at very low (i.e., background) levels in addition to the obvious advantages of the new design, such as, a thicker, more durable chip and a more opaque mylar. It was also determined that no adjustments to the calibration factors would be necessary in switching to the new design.

In this book we have attempted to synthesize the major advances in the field, covering both fundamental understanding and the many applications. The latter serve to demonstrate the success and popularity of OSL as a dosimetry method. The book is designed for researchers and radiation dosimetry practitioners alike. It delves into the detailed theory of the process from the point of view of stimulated relaxation phenomena, describing the energy storage and release processes phenomenologically and developing detailed mathematical descriptions to enable a quantitative understanding of the observed phenomena. The various stimulation modes (continuous wave, pulsed, or linear modulation) are introduced and compared. The properties of the most important synthetic OSL materials beginning with the dominant carbon-doped Al2O3, and moving through discussions of other, less-well studied but nevertheless important, or potentially important, materials. The OSL properties of the two most important natural OSL dosimetry material types, namely quartz and feldspars are discussed in depth. Book excerpt: A new system has been designed for use as a fixed nuclear accident dosimeter based upon the thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD) system used for personnel dosimetry at US Department of Energy facilities managed by Martin Marietta Energy Systems, Inc. The system is made up of a small phantom consisting of two main parts measuring 20 x 20 x 5 cm and made from polymethylmethacrylate. A neutron-sensitive TLD card is placed in the center between the two pieces. Also, TLD cards in standard holders are mounted on the front and back of the phantom. A derivation is made of a linear combination of the responses from the TLD elements which results in calculation of the neutron fluence, absorbed dose, and dose equivalent. By using the right linear combinations, a crude spectrum can be estimated, which allows further calculation of the average fluence-to-dose-equivalent conversion factor. The response of the system was tested and found to be applicable for the evaluation of typical nuclear accident spectra, although considerable improvement can be made by the addition of a sulfur pellet. The system was also tested for angular dependence. In order to move the development of this system from the proof-of-principle to full application, the calculation of the TLD resonse curves must be improved, additional measurements must be made, and the system must be tested in a simulated accident neutron field. The advantages of the new fixed dosimeter system are its simplicity, easy maintenance, and lower operational cost. The system uses standard TLD cards that are already in place throughout Energy Systems facilities. The TLD process personnel are famliiar with evaluating doses from TLDs and can provide information necessary to ensure timely and accurate assessment of exposures that may result from riticality accidents. Most of the quality control requirements are part of the existing personnel dosimetry system.
