Book excerpt: This thesis provides essential information on the systematic design of assembled lanthanide complexes for functional luminescent materials. It discusses the relationships between assembled structures and photo, thermal, and mechanical properties on the basis of crystallography, spectroscopy, and thermodynamics. The described guidelines for assembled structures will be extremely valuable, both for industrial applications and for readers’ fundamental understanding of solid-state photophysics and materials chemistry. Luminescent lanthanide complexes are promising candidates for lighting devices, lasers, and bio-probes owing to their line-like and long-lived emission arising from characteristic 4f–4f transitions. Low-vibrational and asymmetrical coordination structures around lanthanide ions have been introduced to achieve strong luminescence, using specific organic ligands. Recently, assembled lanthanide complexes including coordination polymers and metal organic frameworks have increasingly attracted attention as a new class of luminescent materials offering thermal stability and color tunability. However, improving the luminescence efficiencies of these compounds remains a challenge, and specific molecular designs to control assembled structures and yield additional physical properties have not been established. The author provides a group of bent-angled bridging ligands to boost photoluminescence efficiency, and successfully introduces for the first time glass formability and strong triboluminescence properties.

Book excerpt: This thesis deals with strongly luminescent lanthanide complexes having novel coordination structures. Luminescent lanthanide complexes are promising candidates as active materials for EL devices, lasers, and bio-sensing applications. The organic ligands in lanthanide complexes control geometrical and vibrational frequency structures that are closely related to the luminescent properties. In most of the previous work, however, lanthanide complexes have high-vibrational frequency C–H units close to the metal center for radiationless transition. In this thesis, the luminescent properties of lanthanide complexes with low-vibrational frequency C–F and P=O units are elucidated in terms of geometrical, vibrational, and chemical structures. The author also describes lanthanide coordination polymers with both high thermal stability (decomposition point > 300°C) and strong-luminescent properties (emission quantum yield > 80%). The author believes that novel studies on the characteristic structures and photophysical properties of lanthanide complexes may open up a frontier field in photophysical, coordination and material chemistry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the luminescence mechanism of polynuclear lanthanide complexes, focusing on energy transfer processes using a combination of experimental and theoretical approaches. Lanthanide complexes show intense luminescence from the lanthanide ion through sensitization by the organic ligands. The high chromaticity of the emission and the long lifetimes of the complexes are particularly attractive for applications such as organic light-emitting diodes and bioprobes. Polynuclear lanthanide complexes (coordination polymers and clusters) have attracted considerable interest for functionalization by energy transfer between lanthanide ions. At the same time, such extra processes complicate the luminescence mechanism, hindering the rational design of functional polynuclear lanthanide complexes. Firstly, the book explains the principle of the theoretical methods, and then describes the concentration-quenching mechanism in coordination polymers. It also examines the effect of intrinsic spin–orbit coupling arising from lanthanide ions on the ligand-to-lanthanide energy transfer efficiency and the mechanism of back energy transfer (the opposite of sensitizing energy transfer) in lanthanide clusters. This sets the stage for the final topic: the suppression of back energy transfer by energy transfer between lanthanide ions in lanthanide clusters, which is of critical importance, showing that the lanthanide clusters can be considered a new generation of functional and efficient luminescent material and could also provide a breakthrough in lanthanide photophysics.

Abstract: Abstract of the thesis entitled DESIGN, SYNTHESIS AND FUNCTIONALIZATION OF LUMINESCENT ALKYNYLGOLD(I) COMPLEXES WITH π-CONJUGATED LIGANDS  FROM PHOTOPHYSICS TO SUPRAMOLECULAR ASSEMBLY Submitted by HONG Yau Hin for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in July 2015 A library of polynuclear thiophene-based alkynylgold(I) complexes with N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and triphenylphosphine as the peripheral ligands, [R{(C≡C)Au(NHC)} ] (R = benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene, n = 2, 4; benzo[1,2- b:3,4-b':5,6-b'']trithiophene, n = 3; dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]thiophene, n = 2; dithieno[3,2-e:2',3'-g](dibenzo[b, d]-thiophene), n = 2; 4-hexyl-4H-dithieno[3,2- b:2',3'-d]pyrrole, n = 4) and [R'{(C≡C)Au(PPh )}] (R' = benzo[1,2-b:4,5- 3 2 b']dithiophene), has been synthesized and characterized. The X-ray crystal structure of [BDT{(C≡C)Au(IHex)} -2,6] (BDT = benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene, IHex = 1,3-dihexylimidazol-2-ylidene) has been determined by X-ray crystallography. This class of complexes showed dual emissive behaviour and exhibited broad vibronic-structured emission bands in degassed dichloromethane solution at ambient temperature. As demonstrated by the temperature-dependent UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, some of the alkynylgold(I) complexes were shown to self-assemble in THFwater mixtures through a cooperative growth mechanism. Variation of the alkyl chain length on the NHC ligands not only has a significant effect on the morphologies of the aggregates, but also on the thermodynamic parameters of the self-assembly processes as revealed by the nucleationelongation model. Apart from the thiophene-based sulfur heterocycle-containing alkynylgold(I) system, a series of N-alkyl substituted triindole-based nitrogen heterocycle-containing trinuclear alkynylgold(I) complexes with isocyanide and NHCs as the peripheral ligands, [(TATI){(C≡C)Au(C≡N-R)}] (TATI = trialkyltriindole; R = 2,6-dimethoxyphenyl, 2,6-dimethylphenyl), and [(TATI){(C≡C)Au(NHC)}], has been prepared and characterized. The photophysical properties of the trinuclear alkynylgold(I) complexes have been examined. Their self-assembly properties have also been explored using TEM, SEM, DLS, H NMR spectroscopy, solvent-dependent and variable-temperature UV-vis absorption experiments. Some of the complexes have been demonstrated to possess spherical nanostructures in their THFwater dispersions. The self-assembly was believed to be mediated by the ππ stacking interactions of the central triindole moiety and governed by a cooperative growth mechanism. In addition, a novel class of amphiphilic phosphole-based phosphorus heterocycle-containing alkynylgold(I) complexes, [Au(C≡C-R){Ph-DBP(O)-  ] O(CH ) SO }]K (DBP = 5H-dibenzophosphole; R = phenyl, naphthyl, 2 3 3 phenanthrenyl, pyrenyl, perylenyl, 4-methoxyphenyl, 4-chlorophenyl) was designed and synthesized. The photophysical properties of this class of complexes have been studied. Some of the complexes were shown to display sheet-like nanostructures in aqueous DMSO solution. The self-assembly process was found to be governed by an isodesmic mechanism and mediated by hydrophobichydrophobic interactions between the alkynyl units. It has been shown that modulation of t

Book excerpt: Luminescent lanthanide complexes have been widely studied for various biotechnology and materials science uses, however, the application of these luminescent systems in metallopolymers has been relatively limited, especially when compared to those incorporating transition metal complexes. The unique and interesting photophysical properties of lanthanide complexes (i.e., high color purity and long radiative lifetimes) make these systems ideal for the development of luminescent metallopolymers, which are a unique class of hybrid materials that synthetically incorporate metal centers into organic polymers, thereby taking advantage of the beneficial properties of both traditional inorganic (i.e., catalysis, optics, electronics) and organic (i.e., easy to process, flexible, low weight) materials. A new class of lanthanide complexes exhibiting metal-based visible and near-IR photoluminescence has been designed, synthesized and fully characterized by melting point, ESI-MS, elemental analysis and single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction (when possible). The photophysical properties of these luminescent monomer complexes were studied in solution and the solid state, with the emission spectra displaying the characteristic line-like emission peaks of the trivalent lanthanide ions. This indicates efficient energy transfer from ligand centered excited states to the emissive excited states of the lanthanides. The monomer complexes have been electropolymerized, resulting in conducting metallopolymers that display metal-based photoluminescence. Because these hybrid materials retain the desirable properties of both inorganic semiconductors and organic polymers, such as near metallic electrical conductivity, ease of processing, flexibility and light weight, they are promising for applications in solid-state lighting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ionic liquids and block copolymers are two representative classes of “designer compounds”, which are known for tunability and controllability of their physical and chemical properties via careful selection of their components. Hierarchically structured functional materials are synthesized by self-assembly of block copolymers in ionic liquids, where the block copolymer imparts mechanical strength to the material via self-assembly into long ranged ordered structure, and the ionic liquid imparts electrical conductivity to the system via concomitant free mobile ions. ☐ Understanding the structure-property relationship of complex fluids comprised of self-assembled block copolymer in ionic liquid paves the foundation for rational design and engineering of hierarchically structured functional materials and smart devices. Thus, the goals of this dissertation are threefold: firstly, to develop structure-property relationships for complex fluid model systems composed of self-assembled non-ionic block copolymers in a protic ionic liquid at rest and under ow deformations; secondly, to synthesize and characterize a novel hierarchically structured stretchable ion-conducting material system utilized the structure-property relationship; and lastly, with the fundamental understanding of the structure-property relevancy of the materials, to design and engineer commercializable device prototypes based on the insights extracted from customer discovery interviews. ☐ A non-ionic, spherical micellar ionic liquid complex fluid model system and a non-ionic polymerlike micellar ionic liquid complex fluid model system are explored in this dissertation using a combination of advanced rheological and neutron techniques. In the spherical micellar model systems, it was found that polymer blending is an effective route to create self-assembled complex fluid model systems with tunable microstructure and rheological properties. The study of the polymerlike micellar system reveals that non-ionic polymerlike micelles have di_erent rheological signatures than non-shear banded shear thinning surfactant wormlike micelle solutions. The structure-property relationships determined for the two model systems serve as a reference for formulating and processing non-ionic block copolymer/ionic liquid complex fluids to achieve specific structures that can be crosslinked to create new functional materials. ☐ A simplified two-step manufacturing process has been developed in this dissertation to create an ultra-stretchable conductive iono-elastomer, by self-assembly of concentrated solutions of end-functionalized block copolymers in a protic ionic liquid, followed by chemical crosslinking. The resultant iono-elastomers exhibits an unprecedented combination of high stretchability (3000% elongation and 200 MPa tensile strength at break) and mechano-electrical response. To our knowledge, the strechability is about 10 times higher than reported elastomers. Importantly, the resistance of the material decreases with extension, a unique and non-trivial material response, whose origin is postulated to be the microstructural rearrangement of the micelles. Furthermore, the incorporation of water in the ionic liquid precursor leads to estimated 8.5 times less stretchability, and strikingly, the resistance of iono-elastomer increases with increasing strain. The contrary mechano-electrical response was postulated to be due to different ion binding and transport mechanism in the presence of water. ☐ Based on the material property and customer discovery interviews, a potential application of the iono-elastomer is identified as a motion strain sensor. Significant efforts are made to develop three generations of large strain amplitude, stretchable resistive strain sensor patch prototypes. They should enable customers (e.g., athletes, patients undergoing physical therapy, physical trainers, biomechanicians, etc.) to accurately track motion and performance of specific joints and/or muscles on their smart phone, tablet or computer via Bluetooth wireless communication, with applications in motion capturing, sports performance tracking and rehabilitation monitoring. ☐ Together, advanced rheological and neutron techniques provide a platform for creating structure-property relationships that predict rheological and structural phenomena in soft materials. This research is part of a broader effort to design, synthesize and characterize novel self-assembled non-ionic polymers in ionic liquids by material scientists and engineers. Finally, this work spans interests in both fundamental investigations and technical applications of non-ionic block copolymer self-assembly in ionic liquids, suggesting that the wealth of possible chemistries and ability to create a plethora of hierarchically self-assembled microstructures should lead to many new discoveries.
