Book Synopsis Design and Construction of Multiple Seal Coats by : Cindy K. Estakhri

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objectives of this study were to establish design and construction guidelines for multiple seal coats for the Texas State Department of Highways and Public Transportation. A multiple seal coat is a bituminous surface that results from two or more successive alternating applications of bituminous binder and cover aggregate to an existing paved surface, usually with the smaller aggregate sizes used in each successive layer. From a thorough review of the literature, it was concluded that the key to executing an effective design for multiple seal coats was in the ability to measure the available void space in multiple stone layers that could be filled with binder. A design method developed by the NITRR of South Africa which included a test procedure (Modified Tray Test) for measuring the void content and effective thickness of a stone layer was chosen for further field and laboratory investigation.

Download or read book Design of Open-graded Asphalt Friction Courses written by R. W. Smith and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efforts to improve pavement skid resistance have shown the advantages of using open-graded asphalt paving mixtures. The concept used is that the open-graded asphalt friction course consists predominantly of a narrowly-graded coarse aggregate fraction with a sufficiently high interstitial void capacity to provide for a relatively high asphalt content, a high air void content, and a relatively small fraction of fine mixture while the fine aggregate fraction acts as a filler and imparts a "chocking action" to stabilize the coarse aggregate. The high asphalt content provides for mixture durability and the high air void content provides for adequate subsurface water drainage. The described method is relatively new, but has been used successfully on several FHWA, R & D Demonstration Projects.
Book Synopsis Asphalt Materials and Mix Design Manual by : Irving Kett
Download or read book Asphalt Materials and Mix Design Manual written by Irving Kett and published by William Andrew. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to familiarize industry and students with the technology of asphalt in its several forms namely asphalt cement, cutback asphalt, and asphalt emulsions. The laboratory work is designed to develop an understanding of asphalt properties, characteristics, testing procedures, and specifications. The procedures outlined are all derived from ASTM designations and practice as recommended by the Asphalt Institute. Where the particular ASTM method permits alternate procedures, the one more applicable to the available equipment and the teaching situation was chosen. The manual consists of the following:ò 35 of the frequently used ASTM tests in Asphalt Binder and Mix Design.ò Sample computations and easy to use data sheets, most of which have been developed specifically for the manual.ò An up-to-date overview of Asphalt Technology including sources, historical development, and classifications of asphalt products.ò Easy to understand explanations for Voids Mineral Aggregate, Absorbed Asphalt, Effective Asphalt Content, Percent Air Voids, and Percent of Voids filled with Asphalt.ò A stand-alone asphalt manual, written specifically for university laboratory instruction, yet applicable for a commercial testing laboratory. Rarely will other reference materials need to be referred to.ò Dimensions in both the SI and the US Standard systems of measurement.ò An appendix with conversion factors, rules of safety and procedures, overview of SHRP SUPERPAVE, explanation of asphalt emulsions, and additional data sheets on single-sided pages.

Download or read book Gravel Roads written by Ken Skorseth and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.
