For a closed membrane structure, the skew symmetric constraint parameters vanish, while the existing symmetric domain variables mirror preservation of the system. This procedure does not demand the discretization of the fluid (gas) domain or the link between coupling of fluid (gas) and membrane. As a result of this basic fact, the computation is drastically simplified. The adaptive structures model introduces a novel approach in harnessing solar power for reuse on the ground as a stable source of power. The simulations were based on the space part of the stiff structure created of hexagonal membrane cells. Simulations are carried out in Abaqus Finite Element Analysis software for simplicity & a comparison for validation purposes is tested against an experimental inflatable cell within a vacuum chamber. It was showcased that the final configuration could be achieved regardless of the packaging shape of the inflatable cell array. The inflatable beam model is comprised of two sections, the bending & buckling of the inflated beam and the post-inflation of the bent and buckled beam. Abaqus software was used to simulate the inflatable beam during each configuration utilizing the integration of a modified VUMAT subroutine. A comparison is showcased representing the importance of the integration of the VUMAT subroutine within our Abaqus model.

Book excerpt: NASA and other space agencies are now looking to create a lunar settlement for the continued exploration of Moon and beyond. The most challenging aspect of a lunar settlement is its construction, and the weight and size of building materials brought from Earth. In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) and inflatable structures are considered to be the most preferred way for the fabrication of a lunar settlement because they minimize weight and size. The use and performance of inflatables and flexible structures in space applications have been increased in the recent past due to the technological advancements in materials technology. So, we propose the concept of two-tier semi-rigid inflatable structure where the base is built with the help of autonomous robots using ISRU, and the main inflatable structure is manufactured on Earth and inflated on the lunar surface. Also, magnesium is proposed as the base material as it is the most abundantly available structural-strength material in lunar environment, and it is relatively easy to machine. A hemispherical inflatable structure placed on top of a cylindrical base with regolith shielding around the structure is considered as a possible lunar design as well as the test prototype. A static analysis is first conducted on the proposed design using ANSYS, and the stress values are order-of-magnitude verified with simple calculations that prove the possibility of the material and model. Also, an order-of-magnitude analysis is conducted on meteoroid impact loads where we estimate the maximum size of meteoroid that our structure can sustain. As future work, we suggest the framework known as Performance Based Engineering. We had spent some time attempting to use this framework for a simplified lunar structural analysis. However, large data gaps precluded significant progress. But we include it as one of our future research topics.

Book excerpt: Inflatable structures used for space applications offer mass, volume, and cost savings to spacecraft programs, allowing larger space structures to be built. For certain space applications, there are advantages to using large structures. For example, antennas achieve higher gains when they are increased in size. Higher gains equate to higher data throughputs. Therefore, inflatable structures offer improvements in performance to certain types of spacecraft components. Environmental factors induce surface errors on large inflatable structures, though. This degrades performance, especially for inflatable antennas. To reduce this degradation, active and passive control systems can be used to sense errors and control the shape of the antenna. One method of applying an active and passive control system is by using piezoelectric films that are either attached to or are part of the inflatable structure. The research performed for this thesis explored the theoretical performance of a large inflatable space-based antenna via spreadsheet analysis and the physical performance of a piezoelectric film via laboratory experimentation. For the laboratory experiment, the film was attached to a drum and varying internal pressures and voltages were applied. Also, in order to validate the experimental results, an analytical model was created using MSC/PATRAN and MSC/NASTRAN software.

Book excerpt: Tightening space budgets and stagnating spacelift capabilities are driving the Air Force and other space agencies to focus on inflatable technology as a reliable, inexpensive means of deploying large structures in orbit. Recent improvements in rigidization techniques make the use these inflatable structures feasible for a growing number of missions. For many of these missions, the primary design requirement is dimensional accuracy of the structure. Finite element analysis offers a means of predicting structural behavior in orbit. The analysis requires knowledge of external loads. This thesis examines the environmental disturbances which act upon large, orbiting structures. Calculations are made on a base model to relate the torques generated by these disturbances to the orbital altitude. This facilitates identification of the critical loads. An environmental disturbance model is then developed in MATLAB. The model calculates the critical loads on each element of a faceted structure as it propagates through its orbit. A basic structure is defined and run through the model. Results and analysis for various orbits are presented to verify accuracy of the code and validate the derived torque-altitude relationships.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to validate the structural integrity of the Rigidizable Inflatable Get-Away-Special Experiment (RIGEX) and make appropriate improvements to the design, motivated by static and dynamic analysis results. RIGEX is designed to advance the use of rigidizable inflatable structures in the space environment by providing three sets of on-orbit test data on the structural characteristics of three thermoplastic composite tubes. This thesis discusses the RIGEX structural analysis. The term structural analysis refers to the development of a detailed finite element model and the tests for which the model was used. The finite element model provided an acceptable estimation of RIGEX's natural frequencies, the structural integrity of the fastener system, the maximum stress seen by the aluminum primary structure, and the maximum possible displacements at various locations around the RIGEX structure for various load conditions. These three analyses motivated numerous design changes, which are discussed in detail in this thesis. The analysis process was repeated following each design change until all structural integrity and design criteria were met. In addition to the structural analysis and associated design changes, this thesis presents the as built RIGEX drawing package and wiring schematic. The results presented in this thesis are the first step towards passing the structural integrity requirements set forth by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for manned spaceflight. Recommendations of appropriate construction and testing techniques to ensure the actual structure matches the computer model are discussed.

Book excerpt: This work provides an initial step toward demonstrating a probabilistic numerical simulation capability to support trade studies and the development of a certification plan for inflatable space habitats. This study concentrates on interpreting the results from probabilistic analysis and numerical simulation tools to identify parameter sensitivities for a novel inflatable airlock concept, specifically the Non‐Axisymmetric Inflatable Pressure Structure (NAIPS) that was designed and tested under NASA's Minimalistic Advanced Softgoods Hatch (MASH) Program. A brief overview of the finite element model is provided along with the probabilistic sensitivity analysis approach. The sensitivity studies required a model that was numerically stable and efficient enough that hundreds of simulations could be completed in the allotted time. Therefore, the existing full model was simplified by: extracting a quarter symmetry section of the dome; focusing on a single inflation pressure; and replacing the non‐linear material stress‐strain curves with linear, isotropic materials defined by elastic moduli. Responses of interest include the sensitivity of various structural component loads to material properties, cord lengths, inflation pressure and friction. Multiple sensitivity studies were completed and three are reported here. The first study focused on utilizing wide input parameter ranges to provide an opportunity to assess numerical robustness. The next two studies narrowed the parameter ranges to enable focus on understanding uncertainty at a fixed operating condition. The completion of the sensitivity studies improved understanding of the interdependence of multiple inputs on the responses. In addition, numerical stability of the simulations over wide parameter ranges, shows the feasibility of incorporating uncertainty‐based methods in the design and certification of inflatable space habitats. With the experience and trust gained, it is anticipated that the
