Book excerpt: As interest in high power free electron lasers (FELs) has increased, the FEL and accelerator communities have been faced with the need to develop high bunch charge, high repetition rate, low emittance electron sources for use as the driving accelerators for FELs. A novel superconducting, radio-frequency (SRF) gun/booster has been designed by and built for the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) FEL Beam Physics Lab in collaboration with Niowave, Inc., for studying this electron source regime. The NPS SRF gun/booster operates at 500 MHz and is based upon a quarter-wave structure. It incorporates many features that make it desirable for studying the cathodes and transport regimes necessary to explore high bunch charge beams, including adjustable field focusing, short transport out of the gun, and the ability to change cathode types and materials. After attaining "first beam" in June 2010, the NPS gun has been established as the first SRF electron gun in the United States. Initial results show excellent agreement with simulation with bunch charges of 110 pC and transverse emittance estimates of 4 mm-mrad. Additionally, a modal analysis tool for the NPS FEL simulation software is developed based upon the Hermite-Gaussian basis set. Using a minimization of mode coefficients approach, we decompose output optical fields for amplifier FEL designs and experiments for FEL optimization and comparison of laser output fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital-computer programs have been used to analyze four Pierce-type electron guns. The numerical analysis has been very successful in identifying the deficiencies of the Pierce-design method when extrapolated to high perveances. It also has been possible to obtain radial phase-space diagrams for the beams from each of the electron guns studied. From these diagrams and by the use of several other computer programs, an estimate of the transverse energy distribution of the electron beams has been made. It has been found that the major contribution to the random transverse energy must be of nonthermal origin. (Author).

The device may be used for all phases of transitional and proficiency training for the third crew member of the B-58. Two major trainer systems are discussed. The target generation system provi es for the simultaneous presentation of three simulated airborne targets. The initial conditions under which these targets begin their passes, plus target maximum performance characteristics, are programmed. The system then computes range and azimuth data to simulate attacking vehicles flying a lead collision or pursuit course. Book excerpt: The research involved the theoretical and numerical analysis of the physics of free electron lasers using relativistic particle beams. The major emphasis of the research was to obtain design criteria for the development of a two-stage FEL oscillator operating in the trapped particle mode. The present work was centered on the development of a fully relativistic, nonlinear analysis of the spatial and temporal evolution of multiple modes within a free electron laser oscillator and of a large amplitude, nonlinearly saturated state characteristic of trapped particle mode operation. The equations solved are the Maxwell equations of electrodynamics coupled with the collisionless Boltzmann equation that describes collisionless particles under influence of the electromagnetic fields. The electromagnetic fields include the radiation fields from the FEL and the self-electric fields from the longitudinal potential due to the space charge, i.e., the dominant component of the interparticle Coulomb forces. The particle dynamics transverse to the magnetic axis are included, but gradients in the radiation fields are ignored. The electron beam equilibrium is assumed to be spatially uniform and temporally stationary. Justification and probable impact of further approximations are discussed in the technical section of this report. The approximations employed are consistent with the purpose of obtaining experimentally implementable design criteria for the FEL oscillator. (rh).

Book excerpt: A high-gain, high extraction efficiency, free electron laser (FEL) amplifier operating at the Experimental Test Accelerator (ETA) at 34.6 GHz has demonstrated a small signal gain of 13.4 dB/m. With a 30 kW input signal, the amplifier has produced a saturated output of 80 MW and a 5% extraction efficiency. Comparison of these results with a linear model at small signal levels indicates that the amplifier can deliver saturated output starting from noise, if the brightness of the electron beam is sufficiently high. The brightness of the ETA is far below that possible with optimized choice of practical design characteristics such as peak voltage, cathode type, gun electrode geometry, and focusing field topology. In particular, the measured brightness of the ETA injector is limited by plasma effects from the present cold, plasma cathode. As part of a coordinated theoretical and experimental effort to improve injector performance, we are using the EBQ gun design code to explore the current limits of gridless, relativistic, Pierce columns with moderate current density (>50 A/cm2) at the cathode. The chief component in our experimental effort is a readily modified electron gun that will allow us to test many candidate cathode materials, types, and electrode geometries at field stresses up to 1 MV/cm. 8 references, 5 figures.

Book excerpt: In the design of free-electron lasers, a large number of parameters must be traded off against one another to maximize the performance subject to a variety of constraints. Two examples are considered. In the first it is desired to maximize the gain for a given wavelength, subject to constraints on the electron-beam peak current and energy. In the second example, it is desired to maximize the efficiency for a given wavelength and power, subject to the constraints imposed by mirror damage and optical resonator alignment.

Book excerpt: A one-dimensional steady state (FEL) amplifier, utilizing a linearly polarized magnetic wiggler field, is analyzed in the linear and non-linear operating regimes. Our formulation of the FEL problem includes all the efficiency enhancements schemes, electron beam thermal effects and collective effects, i.e., space charge waves. The axial electron velocity, due to a linearly polarized wiggler field, has a spatially oscillatory component. It is shown that this axial velocity jiggle does not result in phase incoherence between the electrons and the ponderomotive wave. The axial velocity jiggle is explicitly incorporated into our analytical model. The inclusion of the electron jiggle velocity is shown to have a quantitative effect on the non-linear wave particle dynamics. The electron trapping potential associated with the ponderomotive wave is also derived. Finally, a number of numerical examples pertinent to the design of a 10 micron FEL amplifier are presented.
