Book excerpt: Various aspects concerning Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFA) for use in C-band transmission system were investigated through experimental work culminating in the design and implementation of three different C-band EDF A's. The most promising being an EDF A utilizing double pass with tunable bandpass filter (TBF) amplification scheh,e. The configuration is a new approach to increase the sensitivity of the preamplifier before the signal is received by the receiver. This is because, limited sensitivity preamplifiers offered in the markets that limit the fiber optic link design. Thus, a new approach is desirable in solving the problem. In this thesis, new technique is proposed to increase the sensitivity up to IOdB. STM-I and STM-4 Bit Error Rate (BER) test on SDH network was successfully conducted in a laboratory environment. The test showed that no error was introduced. Finally it is concluded that DPEDFA is reliable to be used as a device to realize high sensitivity preamplifier, as its realization would result in a huge increase in additional power budget with minimum installation and maintenance complexity and cost.

Book Synopsis Development of an Enhanced Wide-band Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier Using High Concentration Active Medium by : Belal Ahmed G. Allah Hamida

This book was released on 2013 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the point-to-point transmission an optical signal suffers mainly from attenuation and dispersion. The ongoing research has been focusing on containing this issue by proposing innovative designs in order to provide for an element compensating these effects. This research work focuses on the development of a new design of wide band high concentration optical amplifier. It suggests compensating for attenuation and dispersion both using the same technique. It consists of two stages of 1.5m and 9m long Erbium-Doped Fiber (EDF) optimized to operate in C-band and L-band, respectively. Further, a Chirped Fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) is used in each section to reflect the amplified signal back to the active area so that the overall gain spectrum can be enhanced over a wider frequency spectrum. Using a semi-analytical model (GainMaster), is suggested to verify the proposed design. A numerical model is carried out to implement the energy rate equations for the erbium ions population inversions. In addition, an extensive work has been carried out to implement this design experimentally. The experimental results show that the proposed amplifier gives a wider (1540nm to 1610m) flat high gain (22dB) with variation of ±3dB and low noise figure less than (6.5dB) at low input signal power (-30dBm) . Though solved by CFBG partially, this work has not carried out a quantified exploration of issues related to dispersion, mainly due to unavailability properly characterized equipment. Also an extensive work has been carried out to evaluate the performance of the proposed amplifier by comparing the performance against other available amplifiers. The performance shows that the band width 5nm higher than the existing amplifier with low noise figure about 7dB and gain flatness about 70nm which is higher than the other two amplifiers by 30dm.
Book Synopsis Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers Pumped in the 800-nm Band by : B. Pedersen
Download or read book Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers Pumped in the 800-nm Band written by B. Pedersen and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The performance of fiber amplifiers is extremely sensitive to the material-dependent properties of the pump band. High-power, reliable, low-cost diode lasers are currently only available at 800 nm, a poor pump band for Er3+ due to the low strength of the ground state absorption (GSA) transition and an intense, overlapping excited state absorption (ESA) band. High gains have been achieved with silica fibers by pumping the long-wavelength wing of the GSA band at =820 nm 1,2, thereby avoiding the ESA at shorter wavelengths but introducing another problem by reducing the already low GSA cross section at the pump wavelength. Alternatively, the use of other glass host compositions with reduced ESA has been proposed 3. We have examined both approaches using experimentally determined parameters in a highly quantitative numerical model to compare the performance of Al/P-silica, Ge/P-silica, and fluorophosphate fiber amplifiers. The analysis was performed for co- and bi-directional pumping and included treatments of waveguide design, Er3+ confinement, pump-wavelength dependence of gain and noise figure, and quantum conversion efficiency for power amplifiers.

Download or read book Simulation and performance analysis of digital systems using erbium-doped fiber amplifiers written by and published by . This book was released on 1909 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: With the advent of wavelength routing and dynamic, reconfigurable optical networks, new demands are being made in the design and operation of optical amplifiers. This book provides, for the first time, a comprehensive review of optical amplifier technology in the context of these recent advances in the field. It demonstrates how to manage the trade-offs between amplifier design, network architecture and system management and operation. The book provides an overview of optical amplifiers and reconfigurable networks before examining in greater detail the issues of importance to network operators and equipment manufacturers, including 40G and 100G transmission. Optical amplifier design is fully considered, focusing on fundamentals, design solutions and amplifier performance limitations. Finally, the book discusses other emerging applications for optical amplifiers such as optical networks for high data rate systems, free space systems, long single span links and optical digital networks. This book will be of great value to R&D engineers, network and systems engineers, telecommunications service providers, component suppliers, industry analysts, network operators, postgraduate students, academics and anyone seeking to understand emerging trends in optical networks and the consequent changes in optical amplifier design, features and applications.
