"The Desert of Ice" is the second part of Jules Verne’s novel "The Adventures of Captain Hatteras" from 1864. Captain Hatteras and his crew who have survived the long winter on island "New America" continue their expedition to the North Pole. They discover an island with an active volcano and it turns out that the exact location of the pole is in the crater. Is this the end to the long, difficult and dangerous expedition? If nobody survives how will the rest of the world learn about it? Is it possible that the Captain survives, and is the information he gained more important and valuable than his own health and well being? Jules Verne (1828-1905) was a French novelist who mostly wrote adventure fiction inspired by the scientific advances of the 19th century. With the help of editor Pierre-Jules Hetzel he wrote a series of books called "Extraordinary Travels", which includes "Journey to the Center of the Earth" (1864), "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" (1870), and "Around the World in Eighty Days" (1873). There have been many film adaptations of Jules Verne’s books with the most notable being "Journey to the Center of The Earth" (2008) starring Brendan Fraser and Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games), "Around the World in 80 Days" (1956), and "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" (2012) starring Dwayne Johnson. Widely popular with both children and adults, Verne is one of the most translated authors of all time, and still inspires people the world over.

Book excerpt: 'A wonderful book: Nancy Campbell is a fine storyteller with a rare physical intelligence. The extraordinary brilliance of her eye confers the reader a total immersion in the rimy realms she explores. Glaciers, Arctic floe, verglas, frost and snow -- I can think of no better or warmer guide to the icy ends of the Earth' Dan Richards, author of Climbing Days A vivid and perceptive book combining memoir, scientific and cultural history with a bewitching account of landscape and place, which will appeal to readers of Robert Macfarlane, Roger Deakin and Olivia Laing. Long captivated by the solid yet impermanent nature of ice, by its stark, rugged beauty, acclaimed poet and writer Nancy Campbell sets out from the world's northernmost museum - at Upernavik in Greenland - to explore it in all its facets. From the Bodleian Library archives to the traces left by the great polar expeditions, from remote Arctic settlements to the ice houses of Calcutta, she examines the impact of ice on our lives at a time when it is itself under threat from climate change. The Library of Ice is a fascinating and beautifully rendered evocation of the interplay of people and their environment on a fragile planet, and of a writer's quest to define the value of her work in a disappearing landscape. 'The writer and poet offers reflections on ice and snow that draw on art, science and history... a dreamlike book.' - The Guardian 'It is a sparkling and wonderful meditation on a substance we must cherish' - The Independent 'It is a pleasant brew infused with elements not only of travel and history, but also of memoir and personal reflection'- Literary Review 'Ms Campbell, a penniless but intrepid traveller, braves miserable bus journeys, freezing rain, dark and intense cold, but still manages to write rapturously of the beauties of the Arctic'- The Economist

Book excerpt: Across Time and Space Book 4. Ash likes a challenge. It looks like she's got one... So she's accidentally travelled to the massive, futuristic city of Lile, 2598 AD. But now she's been given cryptic instructions to 'find the blue-eared girl', she's going to give it her best shot. If only George would answer his phone and come join her... Back in Lunden, 1819 AD, George is a little tied up, and severely displeased with his brother and sister-in-law. Sure, he's mentioned time travel once or twice. But is the insane asylum really necessary? Then Anne shows up in his cell with a strange weapon in her hand and a cheeky look in her eye. She also has directions for his next steps... but where has she been? Not far from where Ash is beginning her search, Coryn is rebuilding her life after losing almost everything that matters to her. All she has left is a bag full of junk, as well as instructions to find a desperately powerful supernatural item before the wicked Creatures can do so. But then she runs into an old enemy who's more than they seem. Paths are about to cross in a desperate race to save a nation that doesn't even know it's in danger... Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A passionate eyewitness account of the mysteries and looming demise of glaciers—and what their fate means for our shared future The ice sheets and glaciers that cover one-tenth of Earth's land surface are in grave peril. High in the Alps, Andes, and Himalaya, once-indomitable glaciers are retreating, even dying. Meanwhile, in Antarctica, thinning glaciers may be unlocking vast quantities of methane stored for millions of years beneath the ice. In Ice Rivers, renowned glaciologist Jemma Wadham offers a searing personal account of glaciers and the rapidly unfolding crisis that they—and we—face. Taking readers on a personal journey from Europe and Asia to Antarctica and South America, Wadham introduces majestic glaciers around the globe as individuals—even friends—each with their own unique character and place in their community. She challenges their first appearance as silent, passive, and lifeless, and reveals that glaciers are, in fact, as alive as a forest or soil, teeming with microbial life and deeply connected to almost everything we know. They influence crucial systems on which people depend, from lucrative fisheries to fertile croplands, and represent some of the most sensitive and dynamic parts of our world. Their fate is inescapably entwined with our own, and unless we act to abate the greenhouse warming of our planet the potential consequences are almost unfathomable. A riveting blend of cutting-edge research and tales of encounters with polar bears and survival under the midnight sun, Ice Rivers is an unforgettable portrait of—and love letter to—our vanishing icy wildernesses.
