Book excerpt: The rugged landscapes and hardy living of the Old West find vivid evocation in this superb anthology by the famed cowboy poet Charles Badger Clark. Many of the poems eloquently recall places famed for their role in old west life such as the rolling plains and farms host to great herds of livestock. Herding and driving cattle and other animals on horseback across the vast prairielands was the work of the cowboy; during evenings and breaks in the shade these men would sing songs about their daily life, the sights seen and tough jobs accomplished amid scenes of boundless nature. Charles Badger Clark was one of the most celebrated cowboy poets of his generation. Born in Iowa in 1883, from a young age he demonstrated a great knack for penning evocative verse. Much of his writing is treasured for depicting the slang and quirks of speech peculiar to the cowboys, offering readers authentic glimpses of a lifestyle lost to time. Decades after his death Clark was inducted into Oklahoma's revered Hall of Great Westerners for his contributions to the culture. This reprinting of Sun and Saddle Leather is based upon the expanded fifth edition, which dates to 1920.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lure of the Desert Land, and Other Poems "And some Orient dawn had found me Kneeling at the house of fame." Fame found Madge Morris Wagner in the blazing Colorado desert, her fingers on the pulse of Nature. Or, at least, thither sent Lippincotts of Philadelphia to find her and persuade her to speak through them to the world. And this is what she said, like all who are truly great teachers, making a text of the place and the time: To The Colorado Desert Thou brown, bare-breasted, voiceless mystery, Hot sphinx of nature, cactus, crowned, what hast thou done? Unclothed and mute as when the groans of chaos turned Thy naked burning bosom to the sun. The mountain silences have speech, the rivers sing. Thou answerest never unto anything. Pink-throated lizards pant in thy slim shade; The horned toad runs rustling in the heat; The shadowy gray coyote, born afraid, Steals to some brackish spring and laps, and prowls Away; and howls, and howls and howls and howls, Until the solitude is shaken with an added loneliness. Thy sharp mescal shoots up a giant stalk, Its century of yearning, to the sunburnt skies, And drips rare honey from the lips Of yellow waxen flowers, and dies. Some lengthwise sun-dried shapes with feet and hands And thirsty mouths pressed on the sweltering sands, Mark here and there a gruesome graveless spot Where some one drank thy scorching hotness, and is not. God must have made thee in his anger, and forgot. Not since I can remember have I heard a voice so true as this. It is like the sublime and solemn bass of St. John. It is even John the Baptist crying in the wilderness. Indeed, I doubt if you will find anything more terribly truthful and fearfully sublime this side of Job than this one lone, lorn cry from the desert. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary poetry is dominated by an adherence to the poetics of Indeterminacy, in which tuneless chaos prevails over music and meaning. In their determination to subvert the traditional conventions of poetry, contemporary poets dismiss, in their practice, all the time-honored devices that make poetry, such as, for example, rhythm and rhyme, symbol and song. That is to say, they dismiss Auden's famous formulation that poetry is "memorable speech"--a unique and compelling combination of sound and sense. Rather than joining my peers in their nihilistic revels, my intention, on the contrary, is to employ the traditional practices of poetry to achieve Auden's ideal. Taking that ideal as my own; that is, taking the practice of such great modernists as Dickinson, Robinson, Yeats, Rilke, Pound, Eliot, Cavafy, Stevens, Hart Crane, and Auden, I seek--against the indeterminacy that defines contemporary poetic practice--to make poems memorable for their music and meaning, their sound and sense. Thus, whether attempting a lyrical love poem or a poignant memoir of my growing up in Philly's Little Italy, my intention is to create a dramatic poetry that is to be spoken as well as read, heard as well as seen. Therefore, my poetry stands as a direct challenge to the nihilistic conception of poetry that rules the contemporary literary landscape.

Book excerpt: The "poet-broker" Ed Rosenthal was inspired by surviving alone in the Mojave Desert for six and a half days. The lyrical result of his ordeal, "The Desert Hat," consist of 36 poems illustrated with 12 photographs of his hat and Salvation Canyon where he spent most of his time. Rosenthal's poetry does not recount his experience in detail; it is not replete with maps, photographs, and a day-by-day account of his adventures. Instead, we gain an insight into what it means to be truly lost and found, to survive the strangest of desert nights and return to the heart of the city... with a newly found wisdom and zest for life. With an introduction by Ruth Nolan and photos by Maja Trochimczyk, and Ken and Wendy Sims.

Asian & Asian American Studies. Brandon Shimoda's THE DESERT, a sequel to his William Carlos Williams Award-winning book EVENING ORACLE, guides us deep into, and then back out of, a rich yet desolate North American landscape. Divided into seven sections--featuring poems, letters, diary entries, and photographs--the desert's multiplicity emerges through a ranging exploration of its Japanese American incarceration sites, homeless population, flora and fauna, violence, beauty, and how they combine to reflect this poet's contemporary view of history. Written over three years in the deserts of Arizona, the poet introduces us to the souls of the living and dead, their shadows still residing over the landscape and its mythology.
