The minerals selected for description are not necessarily those that are most common nor those that occur in greatest quantity. The list includes those that are of scientific interest or of economic importance, and, in addition, those that illustrate some principle employed in the classification of minerals. The volume is not a reference book. It is offered solely as a textbook. It does not pretend to furnish a complete discussion of the mineral kingdom, nor a means of determining the nature of any mineral that may be met with. The chapters devoted to the processes of determinative mineralogy are brief, and the familiar "key to the determination of species" is omitted. In place of the latter is a simple guide to the descriptions of minerals to be found in the body of the text. For more complete determinative tables the reader is referred to one of the many good books that are devoted entirely to this phase of the subject. In the descriptions of the characteristic crystals of minerals both the Naumann and the Miller systems of notation are employed, the former because of its almost general use in the more important reference books and the latter because of its almost universal use in modern crystallographic investigations. The student must be familiar with both notations. It is thought that this familiarity can be best acquired by employing the two notations side by side. In preparing the descriptive matter the author has made extensive use of Hintze's Handbuch der Mineralogie. The figures illustrating crystal forms are taken from many sources. For \this purpose and in order to carry out the general ideas Of the series, only the more important Species, whether from a natural history or an economic point of view, are described in much detail, the general relations of the individual species in each group being indicated in a preliminary statement at the commencement Of each chapter. It was originally intended to illustrate the descriptions mainly by the figures in the 'treatise on Systematic Mineralogy;' but during the progress of the work, the writer was fortunate enough to acquire the wood blocks used in the illustration of Brooke and Miller, ' which have been generally regarded as the best examples of their class ever executed, and he has used a selec tion of these in preference to perspective projections. As in the former volume, the double system Of nota tion is followed - that of Miller according to Weiss's order, and the corresponding symbols of Naumann for forms, but the former is alone used for faces. In the figures of the Oblique system it must be borne in mind that sometimes the slope of the Oblique axis is to the right and sometimes to the left, and therefore to bring these into accordance with the assumption Of a uniform forward slope the plane Of projection is, in the former case, the positive, and in the latter the negative clinopinakoid, which will give a corre sponding difference in the indices of the type faces, while Naumann's form-symbols are unchanged. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mineralogy: An Introduction to the Scientific Study of Minerals The student Will not find in the following pages any systematic account of the modes of occurrence of minerals, their geological distribution, their origin, their alterations, or their artificial reproduction, although these constitute the most important, and, perhaps, the most interesting section of Mineralogy proper. There are no chapters upon these subjects because, in my Opinion, they deserve to form a separate volume, and cannot be treated adequately in a volume dealing with the characters and properties of minerals. The essential characters of a mineral, moreover, are quite independent of its source or previous history, and may well be made the first and separate object of study. In the description of mineral species the modern text-book often endeavours to give too much information, and ends by becoming a book of reference rather than a treatise which can be read by the student. This should no longer be necessary, now that Dana's System and Hintze's Handbuch are available; in the present volume an attempt is made to select for the student all that he requires for an elementary acquaint ance with the subject. The species described are those which he will find in all museums, and most of them he may collect for himself. The customary lists of localities are replaced by a description of a few typical occurrences for each important species by a careful study of the corresponding specimens the beginner should obtain the information which will enable him to pursue the subjects of geological and chemical mineralogy with some previous knowledge of minerals. The few angles given are generally only such as are sufficient for the calculation of the axial ratios or for simple exercises in the calculation of indices. In the discussion of optical characters, the introduction of two ellipsoids may appear unnecessary and even confusing; the Fresnel Ellipsoid has been introduced in order to avoid incorrect statements about optic axes, but it will be found that the indicatrix is the only ellipsoid subsequently employed.
