Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of Physics: Largely Experimental; Including the Harvard College "Descriptive List of Elementary Exercises in Physics" The laboratory Exercises of the book are, save in a few unimportant particulars identical with those given in the Harvard Descriptive List of Elementary Exercises in Phys ics, as revised in 1903. The second edition of the book, issued in 1897, was divided into a First Part and a Second Part, the former intended for pupils a year or two younger than those tak ing the latter; and certain subjects, Liquids and Gases, Composition and Resolution of Forces, Gravity and Centre of Gravity, begun in the First Part were taken up again, for more thorough treatment, in the Second Part. The present edition, the third, abolishes this dis continuity and puts the substance of Chapters XIV, XV, and XVI of the second edition into the early part, thus shortening and simplifying the book. On the other hand, the Pendulum is put farther on, into connection with Mo mentum, etc. This rearrangement involves a renumbering of some of the Exercises, which are, for the most part, not greatly changed in their latest revision. Alongside the new number at the head of each Exercise its old number is given in parenthesis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptive List of Elementary Exercises in Physics: Corresponding to the Requirement in Elementary Experimental Physics for Admission to Harvard College and the Lawrence Scientific School A course of study dealing with the leading elementary facts and principles of physics, with quantitative laboratory work by the pupil. The instruction given in this course should include qualitative lecture-room experiments, and should direct especial attention to the illustrations and applications of physical laws to be found in every day life. The candidate will be required to pass a written examina tion, the main object of which will be to determine how much he has profited by such instruction. This examination may include numerical problems. It will contain more questions than any one candidate is expected to answer, in order to make allowance for a considerable diversity of instruction in different schools. The pupil's laboratory work should give practice in the observa tion and explanation of physical phenomena, some familiarity with methods of measurement and some training of the hand and the eye in the direction of precision and skill. It should also be regarded as a means of fixing in the mind of the pupil a considerable variety of facts and principles. The candidate will be required to pass a laboratory examination, the main object of which will be to deter mine how much he has profited by such a laboratory course. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A former Wisconsin high school science teacher makes the case that how and why we teach science matters, especially now that its legitimacy is under attack. Why teach science? The answer to that question will determine how it is taught. Yet despite the enduring belief in this country that science should be taught, there has been no enduring consensus about how or why. This is especially true when it comes to teaching scientific process. Nearly all of the basic knowledge we have about the world is rock solid. The science we teach in high schools in particular—laws of motion, the structure of the atom, cell division, DNA replication, the universal speed limit of light—is accepted as the way nature works. Everyone also agrees that students and the public more generally should understand the methods used to gain this knowledge. But what exactly is the scientific method? Ever since the late 1800s, scientists and science educators have grappled with that question. Through the years, they’ve advanced an assortment of strategies, ranging from “the laboratory method” to the “five-step method” to “science as inquiry” to no method at all. How We Teach Science reveals that each strategy was influenced by the intellectual, cultural, and political circumstances of the time. In some eras, learning about experimentation and scientific inquiry was seen to contribute to an individual’s intellectual and moral improvement, while in others it was viewed as a way to minimize public interference in institutional science. John Rudolph shows that how we think about and teach science will either sustain or thwart future innovation, and ultimately determine how science is perceived and received by the public.

Book excerpt: Ever since the boom of spectrum analysis in the 1860s, spectroscopy has become one of the most fruitful research technologies in analytic chemistry, physics, astronomy, and other sciences. This book is the first in-depth study of the ways in which various types of spectra, especially the sun's Fraunhofer lines, have been recorded, displayed, and interpreted. The book assesses the virtues and pitfalls of various types of depictions, including hand sketches, woodcuts, engravings, lithographs and, from the late 1870s onwards, photomechanical reproductions. The material of a 19th-century engraver or lithographer, the daily research practice of a spectroscopist in the laboratory, or a student's use of spectrum posters in the classroom, all are looked at and documented here. For pioneers of photography such as John Herschel or Hermann Wilhelm Vogel, the spectrum even served as a prime test object for gauging the color sensitivity of their processes. This is a broad, contextual portrayal of the visual culture of spectroscopy in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The illustrations are not confined to spectra--they show instruments, laboratories, people at work, and plates of printing manuals. The result is a multifacetted description, focusing on the period from Fraunhofer up to the beginning of Bohr's quantum theory. A great deal of new and fascinating material from two dozen archives has been included. A must for anyone interested in the history of modern science or in research practice using visual representations.
