Book Synopsis Family-group Names of Recent Fishes by : Richard Van Der Laan
Download or read book Family-group Names of Recent Fishes written by Richard Van Der Laan and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The family-group names of animals (superfamily, family, subfamily, supertribe, tribe and subtribe) are regulated by the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. Family names are particularly important because they are among the most widely used of all technical animal names. Apart from using the correct family-group name according to the Code, it is also important to use one unique universal name (with a fixed spelling) to avoid confusion. We have compiled a list of familygroup names for Recent fishes, applied the rules of the Code and, if possible, tried to conserve the names in prevailing recent practice. We list all of the family-group names found to date for Recent fishes (N=2625), together with their author(s) and year of publication. This list can be used in assigning the correct family-group name to a genus or a group of genera. With this publication we contribute to the usage of correct, universal family-group names in the classification of, and for communication about, Recent fishes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apart from being commercially and socially significant, anchovies and sardines populations occupy crucial positions in the oceans' ecosystems. Low in the food chain, clupeoids tend towards abundance, as if their purpose in life was to be eaten and fuel the upper levels of marine trophic chains. The present book covers a broad spectrum of topics on

Book Synopsis Fish Invasions of the Mediterranean Sea by : Daniel Golani
Download or read book Fish Invasions of the Mediterranean Sea written by Daniel Golani and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological invasions are one of the major factors affecting ecosystems throughout the world. The Mediterranean Sea is one of the most dynamic marine ecosystems in the world and is subject to ongoing invasions of marine organisms. This book focuses on fish invasions of the Mediterranean and presents the latest research on this subject. This comprehensive book includes chapters written by experts on paleontology, climate change, zoogeography, genetics, parasitology, biological monitoring and conservation, as well as chapters devoted to regional and local issues of countries surrounding the Mediterranean, written by experts from those countries. The editors of this book, Dr. Daniel Golani and Brenda Appelbaum-Golani of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, have conducted ichthyological research for over three decades and have published numerous books and articles on fish invasions and biodiversity.
Download or read book The Gulf of Aqaba written by Zeev Reiss and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-12-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reconstruction of ancient marine environments is an important task of the Earth Sciences, of great interest to geology, pure and applied, to oceanography and climatology, as well as to such fields as ecology and evolution. In principle, such reconstructions are based on the actualistic approach of "the present is the key to the past." Since the deciphering of past environmental changes, either nat ural or man-made, has considerable bearing on planning, the past may provide a key to the future. Paleoenvironmental interpretations in the marine realm are based to a great extent on assemblages of fossils recovered from ancient sediments in outcrops and from land-based or submarine drillings. Observable lateral sequences of assemblages in contemporaneous strata, the known or assumed functional or adaptive significance of preserved skeletal struc tures, as well as their evolution through time and space, provide by themselves indications of ancient environmental settings. In some cases even present-day eco logical considerations may be derived from analysis of fossils.
Book Synopsis Field Identification Guide to the Sharks and Rays of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden by : Ramón Bonfil
Download or read book Field Identification Guide to the Sharks and Rays of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden written by Ramón Bonfil and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2004 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a fully illustrated field guide for the identification of the sharks and rays most relevant to the fisheries of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. An extensive literature review and two field surveys in the region were carried out for the preparation of this document. A total of 49 sharks and 45 batoids reliably reported for the region are listed and those common in the fisheries or likely to be found through fisheries operations are fully treated. The guide includes sections on technical terms and measurements for sharks and batoids, and fully illustrated keys to those orders and families that occur in the region. Color plates for a large number of the species are included.

Book Synopsis Mesozoic Fishes by : Gloria Arratia Fuentes
Download or read book Mesozoic Fishes written by Gloria Arratia Fuentes and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mesozoic era was an important time in the evolution of elasmobranch and actinopterygian fishes because it was then that most of the modern groups first entered the fossil record and began to radiate. By the end of the era, many archaic forms had disappeared and the foundation had been laid for the ichthyofauna that now exists. Despite this significant evolutionary change, there has been little concerted research done on Mesozoic fishes and no synopsis or compilation of the systematics and paleoecology of Mesozoic fishes has been published, not even for single groups. To remedy this deficiency, Gloria Arratia initiated the symposium "Mesozoic Fishes ? Systematics and Paleoecology". Its goal was to bring together paleontologists and other scientists studying Mesozoic fishes so that they might evaluate current research and form an active research group to press the investigation forward. The meeting generated fruitful discussions and new information that helps to clarify the course of piscine evolution at a crucial time. Phylogenetic relationships of the different groups were the central issue; but attention was given also to questions of biostratigraphy, functional anatomy, and the evolution of histological structures. The results of the symposium presented in this volumen reflect the current state of knowledge about Mesozoic fishes. The new findings described in the 36 papers and the disagreements among authors concerning the phylogenetic relationships of the fishes they have studied is an invitation to further research.
