C'est que la Description d'Achard est un dictionnaire qui, pour les villes, bourgs, villages ou fiefs de Provence classés par ordre alphabétique, donne des indications sur l'administration, la géographie, l'histoire et les moeurs. Oeuvre encyclopédique, elle aborde ainsi, en deux gros volumes d'environ 600 pages chacun, bien des sujets. Elle est à l'image de son auteur, médecin et académicien, amoureux des Lettres et des Arts, amateur de sciences naturelles, de physique et de numismatique. Mais c'est surtout dans le domaine des fêtes villageoises, les Romérages, que le Description de la Provence d'Achard reste un document irremplaçable qui décrit, dans leurs moindres singularités, tous les aspects de ces réjouissances populaires. La fête est liée à celle d'un saint vénéré par la communauté. C'est donc d'abord une fête religieuse. Elle commence par une procession dans laquelle on porte les reliques du saint que l'on honore par des tirs réguliers de mousquet, la bravade. Cette procession, à l'issue de laquelle on entend la messe, fait le tour du village ou, plus souvent, se dirige vers une chapelle champêtre particulièrement vénérée. Mais la fête n'est pas seulement celle du saint. C'est aussi celle de la communauté d'habitants, dans laquelle s'expriment les compétitions entre les jeunes gens, dans les danses, les courses ou les luttes qui se transforment quelquefois en véritables " guerres ", lorsque le romérage réunit les habitants de plusieurs localités. L'ouvrage d'Achard ne se trouve actuellement que dans les fonds anciens des bibliothèques et son troisième volume est resté manuscrit. C'est pourquoi les auteurs ont choisi de procéder à cette réédition, non pour l'ensemble de la région, mais pour la Provence orientale des pays de Grasse et de Draguignan. Ils ont ainsi le plaisir d'offrir aux chercheurs comme à tout habitant des communes de ces " pays ", avec des illustrations fournies par de vieilles cartes postales ou des clichés inédits datant du début du XXe siècle, ces images de l'ancienne Provence.
