The earliest known ancestor of the American Cantre family was Richard Cantrell (1660-1753) who immigrated to Philadelphia where he and his wife, Dorothy Jones, were the parents of five children. One of the children was Joseph Cantrell (b. 1695) who married Catherine Heath. They were the parents of six children and lived in Delaware. Book excerpt: A Cantrell History is a genealogical and personal history of the family of Oscar Lee Cantrell. Spanning four hundred years, the direct lineage from Richard Cantrill to Oscar Lee Cantrell is related through genealogical research and personal stories. Although numerous branches of the Cantrell family ensued from Richard and Dorothy Jones Cantrill of Philadelphia, this book focuses exclusively on the direct line from Richard to Oscar Cantrell, illustrated by the family trees which open each chapter.Displaying an adventurous and entrepreneurial spirit, these Cantrells explored and established settlements in territories that ultimately became ten states. They lived, worked, worshiped, and raised families during challenging years. They fought in both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. These explorations eventually led James Richard Cantrell to make his permanent home in northeast Texas. He and his wife produced a family of eleven children; the eighth child and fourth son was Oscar Lee Cantrell. Oscar made Collin County, Texas his home and raised a family of twelve children. He and his family are profiled in this history.

In this story he describes the turmoil that enveloped James Morgan as a small child in Arkansas during the Civil War and how it took his father's life and the lives of five of his siblings. He follows James Morgan as he moves to Texas with his mother, leaving home at age ten to find his own way, and returning to Arkansas to grow up and marry. When his wife, Elizabeth Wolf, dies leaving him with a large family to rear, he returns to Texas, where he finds a new wife in Sarah Frances Spencer. James Morgan and Sarah move to Oklahoma Territory in the early 1890s, make their lives there and rear their own family. The author follows the children of James Morgan and Sarah as they grow up, marry, and eventually care for their aging parents. This is the story of an American pioneering family.
