Book excerpt: Entre-Textes introduces advanced students of French to the richness of the Francophone world through literature from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. The course anthology is divided into fourteen modules, each of which pairs a classical text with a modern one. Students are guided to read works from different periods of time and cultural origin and consider how these echo, complement or question each other. Through comparing and contrasting the texts, students will develop a new approach to reading literature while simultaneously reinforcing linguistic and cultural competencies. Suitable for advanced students of French and featuring texts from across the French-speaking world, Entre-Textes is an innovative course anthology with a flexible structure and versatile methodology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a first order witness of the Greek New Testament, Family 13 has a long history in the field of textual criticism. Nearly seventy years after Kirsopp and Silva Lake’s publication, La Famille 13 dans l’évangile de Marc offers an enlarged, wholly up-to-date and thoroughly revised study of the text of the Gospel of Mark for the witnesses considered as family members by Didier Lafleur. His extensive survey includes the history of the discovery of the manuscripts, their codicological description and new research on the text. The most part of the book is devoted to the edition of minuscule 788 (Athens, Nat. Lib. 74), considered by the author as the nearest member to the archetype of the group (f 13). Based on quite new collations for the all extant manuscripts, the edition provides a positive apparatus.

This book was released on 2016-12-14 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a millennium and a half, Egypt was home to at least two commonly used languages of communication. Although this situation is by no means exceptional in the ancient and medieval worlds, the wealth of documentary sources preserved by Egypt's papyri makes the country a privileged observation ground for the study of ancient multilingualism. One of the greatest contributions of papyri to this subject is that they capture more linguistic registers than other ancient and medieval sources, since they range from very private documents not meant by their author to be read by future generations, to official documents produced by the administration, which are preserved in their original form. This collection of essays aims to make this wealth better known, as well as to give a diachronic view of multilingual practices in Egypt from the arrival of the Greeks as a political force in the country with Alexander the Great, to the beginnings of Abbasid rule when Greek, and slowly also Coptic, receded from the documentary record. The first section of the book gives an overview of the documentary sources for this subject, which for ancient history standards are very rich and as yet under-exploited. The second part contains several case studies from different periods that deal with language use in contexts of varying breadth and scope, from its the ritual use in magic or the liturgy to private letters and state administration.

Book excerpt: The essays in Canadian Cultural Exchange / Échanges culturels au Canada provide a nuanced view of Canadian transcultural experience. Rather than considering Canada as a bicultural dichotomy of colonizer/colonized, this book examines a field of many cultures and the creative interactions among them. This study discusses, from various perspectives, Canadian cultural space as being in process of continual translation of both the other and oneself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume looks at the relation between travel writing and cultural memory from a variety of perspectives, ranging from theoretical concerns with genres and conventions to detailed analyses of single texts. As befits the topic, the contributions roam far and wide, both geographically and historically. Some detail early Portuguese voyages of discovery, particularly to the East. Others depict encounters between Early, and not so early, Modern Western travelers and their Other interlocutors. Still others focus on travel writings as literature. Voyages and voyaging in literature form the subject of the last category of essays gathered here. Amongst the authors discussed are Fernão Mendes Pinto, Jean de Sponde, Furtado de Mendonça, Sor Juana Inéz de la Cruz, Elsa Morante, Ingeborg Bachmann, Sophia Andresen, Paul Claudel, Graham Greene, Valéry Larbaud, David Mourão-Ferreira, J.M.G. le Clézio, José Saramago, Michel Leiris, and Claude Lévi-Strauss. The volume concludes with an essay by the French-Lebanese author Salah Stétié.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patrons, Authors and Workshops invokes a cross-disciplinary approach to the study of late medieval books and book production in Paris, from the troubled years of the early fifteenth century onwards. It shows the extent to which such activity was able to flourish even against the backdrop of the endemic struggle between Burgundians and Armagnacs, or the subsequent English invasion which led to Agincourt and the regency of Bedford. Extensive coverage is given to the key role played by the libraire, to the author as scribe or copyist (Christine de Pisan, Jean Lebegue), and also to the development of commercial production under figures such as Jean Trepperel. A section on bibliophiles and their various commissions leads into a group of essays that focus on particular texts and authors, whilst a further section concentrates on what we can discover about the role of the scribe. The volume concludes with four essays offering insights into the work of particular artists and illuminators. The authors include scholars from the UK, France, Greece, Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and the USA. Godfried Croenen is Lecturer in French at the University of Liverpool. Peter Ainsworth is Professor of French at the University of Sheffield.
