Book Synopsis The Malebranche Moment by : Etienne Gilson
Download or read book The Malebranche Moment written by Etienne Gilson and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1921, Etienne Gilson, one of the greatest Christian philosophers since Thomas Aquinas, began teaching at the Sorbonne. A twenty-three-year-old student, Henri Gouhier, promptly asked Gilson to direct his doctoral work on the great seventeenth-century philosopher Nicolas Malebranche. Gilson agreed. Thus began a relationship that ripened into a very deep personal and professional friendship lasting more than half a century. Gilson engaged in extensive correspondence throughout his long life, but little of it has seen the light of day. The letters in this volume, mostly from Gilson, reveal his extraordinary knowledge and intelligence, high standard of scholarship, sense of humor, remarkably distinctive style, and serious Catholicism. The letters also reveal aspects of Gilson the man behind the scholar hitherto privy only to students and close friends.
Download or read book Rococo Echo written by Melissa Lee Hyde and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Rococo echo, a team of international contributors adopts a wide lens to explore the relationship of the Rococo with time. Through chapters organised around broad temporal moments -- the French Revolution, the First World War and the turn of the twenty-first century -- contributors show that the Rococo has been viewed variously as modern, late, ruined, revived, preserved and anticipated. Taking into account the temporality of the Rococo as form, some contributors consider its function as both a visual language and a cultural marker engaged in different ways with the politics of nationalism, gender and race. The Rococo is examined, too, as a mode of expression that encompassed and assimilated styles, and which functioned as a surprisingly effective means of resisting both authority -- whether political, religious or artistic -- and cultural norms of gender and class. Contributors also show how the Rococo, from its birth in France, reverberated through England, Germany, Italy, Portugal and the South American colonies to become a pan-European, even global movement.--Back cover.

Book Synopsis When Gods Speak to Men by : Stéphanie Anthonioz

Book excerpt: The nature of divine speech in Antiquity in the Mediterranean Basin has often been the object of scholarly analysis, especially regarding its divinatory context and questions of genre and rhetoric. The present volume not only provokes a dialogue with this past research, but seeks to respond to a problem that has received little consideration until now: the articulation of divine speech with the various forms of its representation (linguistic, literary, and material). The aim is to analyze the nature of divine speech through its materiality and the impact of the latter on the former's definition and evolution.
Book Synopsis The Newton Wars & the Beginning of the French Enlightenment by : J.B. Shank
Download or read book The Newton Wars & the Beginning of the French Enlightenment written by J.B. Shank and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nothing is considered more natural than the connection between Isaac Newton’s science and the modernity that came into being during the eighteenth-century Enlightenment. Terms like “Newtonianism” are routinely taken as synonyms for “Enlightenment” and “modern” thought, yet the particular conjunction of these terms has a history full of accidents and contingencies. Modern physics, for example, was not the determined result of the rational unfolding of Newton’s scientific work in the eighteenth century, nor was the Enlightenment the natural and inevitable consequence of Newton’s eighteenth-century reception. Each of these outcomes, in fact, was a contingent event produced by the particular historical developments of the early eighteenth century. A comprehensive study of public culture, The Newton Wars and the Beginning of the French Enlightenment digsbelow the surface of the commonplace narratives that link Newton with Enlightenment thought to examine the actual historical changes that brought them together in eighteenth-century time and space. Drawing on the full range of early modern scientific sources, from studied scientific treatises and academic papers to book reviews, commentaries, and private correspondence, J. B. Shank challenges the widely accepted claim that Isaac Newton’s solitary genius is the reason for his iconic status as the father of modern physics and the philosophemovement.
