Book Synopsis Hans Urs von Balthasar on the Spiritual Exercises by : Hans Urs von Balthasar
Download or read book Hans Urs von Balthasar on the Spiritual Exercises written by Hans Urs von Balthasar and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2019-03-25 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I would like one day," Hans Urs von Balthasar wrote in 1952, "to write a book on Ignatius of Loyola, the saint of whom I will always consider myself the least of sons." The Jesuit-formed theologian from Switzerland—widely considered one of the greatest thinkers and spiritual writers of modern times—never got the chance to fulfill this dream. Instead, Balthasar's whole theology, from Theo-Drama to Dare We Hope "That All Men Be Saved", is imbued with the influence of Saint Ignatius, founder of the Society of Jesus and author of the Spiritual Exercises, a multi-week retreat guide that has rejuvenated Catholic spirituality since the sixteenth century. Throughout Balthasar's priestly life, he led countless retreatants in the Ignatian Exercises, accompanying them in their discernment of God's call. This anthology is an aid for those either giving or making an Ignatian retreat. Full of citations and equipped with four indexes, as well as many texts never before translated into English, it sifts Balthasar's writings for insights into almost every element of Ignatius' "libretto", sometimes diving into themes scarcely explored by others. Moreover, it maps out those hidden strains of Jesuit spirituality that run unnoticed through the theologian's oeuvre. Yet the book may help anyone at all who wants to engage more deeply with Jesus or come to grips with Church doctrine, for as Balthasar himself says, the Spiritual Exercises are both a "great school of Christocentric contemplation" and a "genuine interpretation of the deposit of the faith".

Book Synopsis Romano Guardini by : Hans Urs von Balthasar
Download or read book Romano Guardini written by Hans Urs von Balthasar and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Romano Guardini (1885-1968) was one of the greatest Catholic minds of the twentieth century. He helped shape Catholic theology between the two world wars and after, as well as the thinking of many non-Catholics of the period. His influence contributed to the reforms of the Second Vatican Council and it continues to be felt through Pope Benedict, who, as a theologian, a cardinal and now as Pope, has drawn extensively on Guardini for inspiration. Indeed, Guardini was a major theological mentor of Benedict XVI, influencing the Pope from his understanding of Jesus to his writings on the sacred Liturgy, from his view of faith to his perspective on the modern world. Romano Guardini: Reform from the Source, written by another great theological mind, Hans urs von Balthasar, presents a kind of "roadmap" to Guardini's thought. As an introduction to Guardini, von Balthasar's study is intended to challenge readers to take up Guardini's own writings and to find in him the wisdom that has inspired so many others. Many of Guardini's influential works are still in print today, works that cover a wide range of important spiritual, theological and moral issues.
Book Synopsis Pietism in Petticoats and Other Comedies by : Louise Adelgunde Victorie Gottsched
Download or read book Pietism in Petticoats and Other Comedies written by Louise Adelgunde Victorie Gottsched and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1994 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First English translation of Gottsched's five original comedies. Luise Adelgunde Gottsched (1713-1762), poet, essayist, translator, and playwright, was regarded during her lifetime as intellectually the most formidable woman in Germany. Together with her better-known husband, Johann C. Gottsched, she crusaded to reform the language and literary taste of the Germans. Frau Gottsched's most important contribution to German literature came in the form of her translations and original comedies in the French classical style. The present volume offers for the first time in English translation Luise Gottsched's five original comedies, including Pietism in Petticoats (1736). The targets of her biting wit are hypocritical religious fundamentalists, the gentry, middle-class social climbers, German francophiles, and pseudo-intellectuals. These witty satires make it obvious why Luise has come to be viewed as the mother of the modern German comedy.

Book Synopsis The Sacrament of Confession as a by : William Schmitt
Download or read book The Sacrament of Confession as a written by William Schmitt and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adrienne von Speyr in her book "Confession" and throughout her writings speaks of the "confession" of Jesus Christ. This is a startling use of the term because Christ never sinned. The author examines all the writings of von Speyr in the light of Roman Catholic soteriology and sacramental theology and in view of the influences that existed between her and Hans Urs von Balthasar. The author then shows how the theme of confession is central to von Speyr's writing, aids in illuminating her theology of Holy Saturday and the Paschal Mystery, and serves as the basis for the renewal of the sacrament of confession.
Book Synopsis The Spirit of the Liturgy -- Commemorative Edition by : Joseph Ratzinger
Download or read book The Spirit of the Liturgy -- Commemorative Edition written by Joseph Ratzinger and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In honor of its fortieth anniversary (1978–2018), Ignatius Press presents a special Commemorative Edition of one of the most important works written by Joseph Ratzinger, The Spirit of the Liturgy. This edition includes the earlier classic work with the same title by Servant of God Romano Guardini, a book that helped Ratzinger to "rediscover the liturgy in all its beauty, hidden wealth and time-transcending grandeur, to see it as the animating center of the Church, the very center of Christian life". Considered by Ratzinger devotees as one of his greatest works, this profound and beautifully written treatment of the liturgy will help readers to deepen their understanding of the"great prayer of the Church". The cardinal discusses fundamental misunderstandings of the Second Vatican Council's intentions for liturgical renewal, especially about the priest's orientation of prayer to the Father, the placement of the tabernacle in churches, and the posture of kneeling. Other important topics are the essence of worship, the Jewish roots of Christian prayer, the relationship of the liturgy to time and space, sacred art and music, and the active participation of the faithful in the Mass.

Romano Guardini (1885–1968), a major influencer of Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis, worked through one of the most difficult periods of German history—the first half of the twentieth century. What does he have to say to these challenges, and how is his notion of providence relevant today? Jane Lee-Barker shows how Guardini’s insight and deep thought on God’s providence weave their way through his work, enabling the reader to fully appreciate “God’s world.” In relationship with God, the human person is invited to participate in responsible care for the world while responding to their own vocational call from the God who sustains him or her.
