Book Synopsis A Library of the World's Best Literature - Ancient and Modern - Vol.XXXI (Forty-Five Volumes); Reade-Ruffini by : Charles Dudley Warner
Download or read book A Library of the World's Best Literature - Ancient and Modern - Vol.XXXI (Forty-Five Volumes); Reade-Ruffini written by Charles Dudley Warner and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2008-07-01 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular American essayist, novelist, and journalist CHARLES DUDLEY WARNER (1829-1900) was renowned for the warmth and intimacy of his writing, which encompassed travelogue, biography and autobiography, fiction, and more, and influenced entire generations of his fellow writers. Here, the prolific writer turned editor for his final grand work, a splendid survey of global literature, classic and modern, and it's not too much to suggest that if his friend and colleague Mark Twain-who stole Warner's quip about how "everybody complains about the weather, but nobody does anything about it"-had assembled this set, it would still be hailed today as one of the great achievements of the book world. Highlights from Volume 31 include: . the histories of James Ford Rhodes . the fiction of Samuel Richardson . the writing of Anne Thackeray Ritchie . the maxims of La Rochefoucauld . the Roman poets of the Later Empire . the poetry of Pierre Ronsard . the writings of Theodore Roosevelt . the poetry of Christina Georgina Rossetti and Dante Gabriel Rossetti . the philosophy of Jean Jacques Rousseau . and much, much more.

Download or read book The Narrator written by Sylvie Patron and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2023-09 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The narrator (the answer to the question "who speaks in the text?") is a commonly used notion in teaching literature and in literary criticism, even though it is the object of an ongoing debate in narrative theory. Do all fictional narratives have a narrator, or only some of them? Can narratives thus be "narratorless"? This question divides communicational theories (based on the communication between real or fictional narrator and narratee) and noncommunicational or poetic theories (which aim to rehabilitate the function of the author as the creator of the fictional narrative). Clarifying the notion of the narrator requires a historical and epistemological approach focused on the opposition between communicational theories of narrative in general and noncommunicational or poetic theories of the fictional narrative in particular. The Narrator offers an original and critical synthesis of the problem of the narrator in the work of narratologists and other theoreticians of narrative communication from the French, Czech, German, and American traditions and in representations of the noncommunicational theories of fictional narrative. Sylvie Patron provides linguistic and pragmatic tools for interrogating the concept of the narrator based on the idea that fictional narrative has the power to signal, by specific linguistic marks, that the reader must construct a narrator; when these marks are missing, the reader is able to perceive other forms and other narrative effects, specially sought after by certain authors.
Book Synopsis The Ends of Satire by : Daniel Bowles
Download or read book The Ends of Satire written by Daniel Bowles and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-02-24 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How are we to think of satire if it has ceased to exist as a discrete genre? This study proposes a novel solution, understanding the satiric in the postwar era as a set of writing practices: figures of inversion, myth-making, and citation. By showing how writers and theorists alike deploy these devices in new contexts, this book reexamines the link between German postwar writing and the history of satire, and between literature and theory.
