Book Synopsis The Telemann Compendium by : Steven David Zohn
Download or read book The Telemann Compendium written by Steven David Zohn and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first guide to research on the Baroque composer Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) in any language. Although the scholarly 'Telemann Renaissance' is now a half-century old, there has never been a book intended to serve as a gateway for further study. Apart from a handful of biographies, dictionary entries, and annotated bibliographies (many of which are now severely out of date), students of Telemann's life and music have been left to dive into the secondary literature in order to get their bearings. Considering that this now burgeoning literature has mainly taken the form of German dissertations and conference proceedings, it is small wonder that the field of Telemann studies has been relatively slow to develop in the English-speaking world. And yet the veritable explosion of performances, both live and recorded, of the composer's music in recent decades has won him an ever-increasing following among musicians and concert-goers worldwide. As with other books in the Composer Compendia series, the book includes a brief biography, dictionary, works-list, and selective bibliography. STEVEN ZOHN is Laura Carnell Professor of Music History at Temple University.

Book Synopsis Benedict XVI's Reform by : Nicola Bux

Book excerpt: When Benedict XVI reestablished the celebration of the older Latin Mass, voices of protest rose up from many sides. This book explains the motives behind the Pope's decision to allow two forms of the Mass by turning to the Pope's own theological and liturgical writings and also draws on the author's experiences on various Church commissions and in offices of the Roman Curia. The author also brings to his subject an astute understanding of current social and spiritual trends both inside and outside the Church. Sensitive to modern man's hunger for the sacred, he desires with Pope Benedict XVI that the Mass be first and foremost a place of encounter with the living God. --Publisher.

Download or read book The Ratzinger Reader written by Joseph Ratzinger and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2010-07-08 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `An invaluable, unique resource for readers of Roman Catholic theology' PHILIP ENDEAN, S.J., CAMPION HALL, OXFORD, UK `First as a theologian, then bishop and later the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Joseph Ratzinger is often thought to have moved steadily to the right. In this collection, Gerard Mannion and Lieven Boeve dispel such easy generalizations. With judiciously chosen and suitably lengthy extracts from Ratzinger's writings, accompanied by helpful editorial comments, these two leading European Catholic theologians demonstrate the continuity of the one Ratzinger and consequently shed light on the complexity of his present-day role as Pope. Anyone who wishes to understand better the current face of Roman theology is greatly in their debt.' PAUL LAKELAND, FAIRFIELD UNIVERSITY, USA `An indispensable guide for understanding the theology of Joseph Ratzinger. Ratzinger insists that his theological opinions are distinct from his official positions as prefect and pope, but this collection shows otherwise. A very personal theology has become the official theology of the church.'---BRADFORD HINZE, FORDHAM UNIVERSITY, USA `Anyone attempting to gain serious familiarity with the theology of Joseph Ratzinger will find this book invaluable. It is not just a conventional reader but a uniquely structured, signposted guide through the terrain of Ratzinger's theology as a whole. It comes at exactly the right time in emerging Ratzinger scholarship, providing a pathway for the uninitiated as well as a compact one-volume resource for those who are further along the road. I recommend it highly.'-JAMES CORKERY, S.J., MILLTOWN INSTITUTE OF THEOLOGY AND PHILOSOPHY, DUBLIN, IRELAND

Book excerpt: Finding Virginia follows David's search to regain solid ground after being hit by the same economic woes that have shaken America's middle class -- the dot.com bust, real estate crash, college debt -- problems suddenly compounded by his father's failing health during the summer of 2011. A true story, his journey takes an unlikely and compelling path that includes romance, humor, jeeps, and reflections on a coming-of-age summer working at an island resort in 1986. His stories weave into an entertaining and satisfying whole, a bumpy ride cushioned by an underlying optimism that characterizes the American spirit. ""Finding Virginia is a fun read, an interesting yarn about a guy whose life has followed the Jeep trail less traveled." Arches Magazine, Spring 2012 ""Just finished your book. It was an excellent piece of literature. It had just the right amount of love story, jeeps, and life in general. A+. I'll recommend it to all my friends." " William Dabney ""Dave, you hit a home run. It is Not Zen and the art of Motorcycle maintenance....Your book is much more readable than that was . . . This is a book that you CAN give your wife to read....and she will enjoy it."" Bill Reiss ""I finished your book and, although I don't share your love of jeeps (but do now have more of an appreciation of them), your passion for jeeps, life, and food, your compassion for your parents, and your emotional honesty was most touching. Few autobiographies that I have read which were written by men have achieved this level emotional intimacy- entirely unvarnished by a layer of machismo."" Leslie Guerci ""David, I just have to tell you I loved your book. Your descriptive writing style is just wonderful and it kept me glued to the pages wanting to know more."" Robert Christy ""And the book is great I end up feeling like I just heard a story from a long lost friend. David, you are really good at painting a picture with your stories. I like that kind of writing. And I just love how you flow from family to jeeps to Virginia...it's all connected...but not. I just like it okay."" Dana Foster Wilfert ""Bought and read the book. You have a great style and should attack a good novel. In my life I have read many writers as they have written a number of books. I think you have started at a higher level than most. Keep it up. As for connections that can never be broken, you have and will find that they have an uncanny way of finding the right place which is of course the point of being so naturally connected. Too philosophical but when you write about such topics you are bound to open up the topic. Take care and good fortune to you. Once again good job on the book. I enjoyed it greatly. Keep writing "" Wade Hall ""Thanks for the new book.I started to read mine lastTuesday and I am already in Page 80; Wow , I haveto say you did a great job. It is funny because I am learning so much about you that actually feels strange. You have had a very singular life, with some many different aspects. Theplotis fascinating, it is really hard to stop reading."" Sebastian Logo-Guerrero

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `Long before his ascent to the papacy, Joseph Ratzinger believed that the celebration of the liturgy was not only central to Catholic life, but that liturgical aberrations contributed mightily to post-Conciliar confusion and decline. Book Synopsis The Rameau Compendium by : Graham Sadler
Download or read book The Rameau Compendium written by Graham Sadler and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the most authoritative and up-to-date source of quick reference on the Baroque composer and theorist Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764), covering every significant area of his life and creative activity. In particular, the dictionary and work-list provide the reader with easy access to a wealth of cross-referenced material. The dictionary highlights recent discoveries and developments, and corrects a number of errors and misunderstandings. It includes entries on institutions, places, individuals, genres, instruments, technical terms, iconography, editions, specific works and publications, and caters for the fact that some users will be at least as interested in Rameau's theoretical writings as in his life and music. Performers too are well served by the range of entries, many of which illuminate aspects of Rameau's notation and performance practice that can prove puzzling to the non-specialist. The biographical chapter not only provides relevant factual information but also draws attention to significant patterns in Rameau's life and work. This book counters the widespread perception of the composer as a dry, irascible, unsociable individual, revealing him in a far more sympathetic light by giving due weight to hitherto little-known information. GRAHAM SADLER is Professor Emeritus at the University of Hull, Research Professor at Birmingham Conservatoire and Research Fellow at the University of Oxford. He is known internationally as an authority on French music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Book Synopsis Liturgy and Tradition by : Alexander Schmemann
Download or read book Liturgy and Tradition written by Alexander Schmemann and published by RSM Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflections on the theological aspect of the liturgy was the focus of Alexander Schmemann's intellectual life. He intuitively grasped and insisted upon the essentially theological character of all liturgical renewal. He recognized that the renewal of the church requires a rediscovery of the liturgy's own inherent theology, that same theology which once informed the whole of the church's life as well as the teachings and writings of the leaders of the Patristic age. This theological content which is inherent in the liturgy itself is designed by Schmemann as liturgical theology.
