Der Glaube an Gott hat im menschlichen Denken eine lange Tradition und zeigt sich, soweit Zeugnisse Aufschluss geben. Viel jünger hingegen sind die Versuche, diesen Glauben an Göttliches zu rationalisieren und die Existenz Gottes zu beweisen1. Das ontologische Argument ist eines der berühmtesten philosophischen Argumente. Erstmals um 1100 von Anselm von Canterbury formuliert, wurde dieser Beweis in der mittelalterlichen Philosophie neben anderen Beweisen zur Geltung gebracht, bald darauf abgelehnt, bis er mit dem spätmittelalterlichen Nominalismus hinfällig geworden zu sein schien. In der rationalistischen Metaphysik des 17. und 18. Jahrhundert lebte er jedoch wieder auf und wurde als der wichtigste und zentrale Gottesbeweis betrachtet. Er galt entweder als der einzige Weg zur vernünftigen Erkenntnis Gottes oder zumindest als jener Beweis, in den alle anderen Versuche, die Existenz Gottes zu beweisen, mündeten2. Im Folgenden werde ich zunächst einleitend Anselms Versuch, die Existenz Gottes zu beweisen, kurz darstellen und daraufhin die Argumentation Descartes in der 3. und 5. Im nächsten Schritt werden alle gezeigten Standpunkte beurteilt. An diese Darstellung und Würdigung der bedeutendsten Gottesbeweise der letzten neun Jahrhunderte schließt sich eine die Arbeit abschließende theologische Würdigung des anselmschen "Beweises" an, die seinen speziellen Kontext berücksichtigt, durch den er sich von den anderen Beweisgängen deutlich unterscheidet, und seine Relevanz für die heutige Arbeit in Theologie und Kirche herausstellt.

In dem Begriff ontologisch ist das griechische Wort on (seiend) enthalten. Da Anselm das Seien von Gott als unwiderlegbar zu beweisen versucht und dies nach seiner Überzeugung auch geschafft hat, ist die Bezeichnung ontologischer Gottesbeweis meiner Meinung nach durchaus verständlich. Das Seien von Gott ist wohl der zentrale Gedanke des Beweises, wobei z.B. der Ursprung des Universums, der für andere Gottesbeweise von Bedeutung ist, für Anselm überhaupt keine Rolle spielt. Auch wenn man bei der aristotelischen Vorstellung vom "unbewegten Beweger" vielleicht von einem Gottesbeweis sprechen kann, so gilt das anselmianische Argument als erster historischer Beweis. Er wurde seit seiner Erscheinung im 11. Jahrhundert sehr oft diskutiert, erörtert, aber auch widerlegt. Angefangen hat die Diskussion mit der sogenannten Anselm-Gaunilo Kontroverse: Der Mönch Gaunilo von Marmoutiers versuchte kurz nach der Veröffentlichung des Beweises, diesen zu widerlegen, woraufhin Anselm prompt Stellung nahm und seinerseits versuchte, den Einwand Gaunilos zu widerlegen. Die historische Debatte ging dann weiter über Thomas von Aquin, Rene Descartes, Immanuel Kant, G.W.F. Hegel bis ins 20. Jahrhundert, wo der Beweis von Alvin Platinga, J. L.
