Book excerpt: In his latest book, fairy tales expert Jack Zipes explores the question of why some fairy tales "work" and others don't, why the fairy tale is uniquely capable of getting under the skin of culture and staying there. Why, in other words, fairy tales "stick." Long an advocate of the fairy tale as a serious genre with wide social and cultural ramifications, Jack Zipes here makes his strongest case for the idea of the fairy tale not just as a collection of stories for children but a profoundly important genre. Why Fairy Tales Stick contains two chapters on the history and theory of the genre, followed by case studies of famous tales (including Cinderella, Snow White, and Bluebeard), followed by a summary chapter on the problematic nature of traditional storytelling in the twenty-first century.

This book was released on 2017-04-09 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition contains the English translation and the original text in German. "Master Cat; or, The Booted Cat" (Italian: "Il gatto con gli stivali"; French: "Le Maître Chat, ou Le Chat Botté"); commonly known in English as "Puss in Boots", is an European literary fairy tale about a cat who uses trickery and deceit to gain power, wealth, and the hand of a princess in marriage for his penniless and low-born master. The oldest record of written history dates from Italian author Giovanni Francesco Straparola, who included it in his The Facetious Nights of Straparola (c. 1550-53) in XIV-XV. The tale was written at the close of the seventeenth century by Charles Perrault (1628-1703), a retired civil servant and member of the "Académie française". Another version was published in 1634 by Giambattista Basile with the title "Cagliuso". The tale appeared in a handwritten and illustrated manuscript two years before its 1697 publication by Barbin in a collection of eight fairy tales by Perrault called "Histoires ou contes du temps passé". The book was an instant success and remains popular. Perrault's "Histoires" has had considerable impact on world culture. The original French title was "Histoires ou contes du temps passé, avec des moralités" with the subtitle "Les Contes de ma mère l'Oye" ("Stories or Fairy Tales from Past Times with Morals", subtitled "Mother Goose Tales"). The frontispiece to the earliest English editions depicts an old woman telling tales to a group of children beneath a placard inscribed "MOTHER GOOSE'S TALES" and is credited with launching the Mother Goose legend in the English-speaking world. "Puss in Boots" has provided inspiration for composers, choreographers, and other artists over the centuries. The cat appears in the third act "pas de caractère" of Tchaikovsky's ballet "The Sleeping Beauty", for example, and makes appearances in other media. "Der gestiefelte Kater" ist ein Märchen (ATU 545B). Es stand in den Kinder- und Hausmärchen der Brüder Grimm nur in der 1. Auflage von 1812 als Nr. 33 (KHM 33a). In der modernen, von Heinz Rölleke herausgegebenen Ausgabe findet es sich als Nr. 5 im Anhang.

Book excerpt: Puss in Boots is a children’s fairy-tale that is as old as time. It was first written by the French fabulist, Charles Perrault; it is the story about the third and youngest son of a miller who receives two boots as his inheritance—and that son is, strangely, a cat. Determined to make his master a fortune, the cat bags a rabbit and gives it to the king as a gift from his master. The cat continues to make games and present the king with gifts throughout the whole story. This version was written by German playwright Ludwig Tieck in 1797. Some scholars say that this German adaptation was a precursor of the Theatre of the Absurd. It contains some annotations.

Book excerpt: In this, the first modern study of the ancient fairytale, Graham Anderson asks whether the familiar children's fairytale of today existed in the ancient world. He examines texts from the classical period and finds many stories which resemble those we know today, including: * a Jewish Egyptian Cinderella * a Snow White whose enemy is the goddess Artemis * a Pied Piper at Troy. He puts forward many previously unsuspected candidates as classical variants of the modern fairytale and argues that the degree of violence and cruelty in the ancient tales means they must have been meant for adults.
