Book excerpt: In this unique title, the full range of chronic respiratory conditions and their association with psychiatric comorbidities are explored and targeted management options are outlined. Indeed recent studies indicate a far higher prevalence of depression and anxiety in patients afflicted with chronic respiratory conditions than in patients with other chronic disorders. Unlike other publications in the field of pulmonary disease, Depression and Anxiety in Patients with Chronic Respiratory Diseases details this significant correlation. The book is comprehensive in scope, covering such topics as depression and anxiety across the age spectrum, diagnostic tools for anxiety and depression, anxiety and depression in COPD patients, depression and anxiety in adult patients with asthma, and end-stage lung disease and lung transplantation, among others. In this novel work, the volume Editors enlist a team of renowned experts in the fields of respiratory and psychiatric disorders to combine a thorough synthesis of the literature with targeted, practical strategies for management. Depression and Anxiety in Patients with Chronic Respiratory Diseases is an invaluable resource for all clinicians who care for patients with chronic and advanced lung diseases.

Book excerpt: This, the first of two volumes on personalized medicine in lung cancer, touches on the core issues related to the understanding of lung cancer—statistics and epidemiology of lung cancer—along with the incidence of lung cancer in non-smokers. A major focus of this volume is the state of current therapies against lung cancer—immune, targeted therapies against EGFR TKIs, KRAS, ALK, angiogenesis; the associated challenges, especially resistance mechanisms; and recent progress in targeted drug development based on metal chemistry. Chapters are written by some of the leading experts in the field, who provide a better understanding of lung cancer, the factors that make it lethal, and current research focused on developing personalized treatment plans. With a unique mix of topics, this volume summarizes the current state-of-knowledge on lung cancer and the available therapies.

Book excerpt: Chronic diseases are common and costly, yet they are also among the most preventable health problems. Comprehensive and accurate disease surveillance systems are needed to implement successful efforts which will reduce the burden of chronic diseases on the U.S. population. A number of sources of surveillance data-including population surveys, cohort studies, disease registries, administrative health data, and vital statistics-contribute critical information about chronic disease. But no central surveillance system provides the information needed to analyze how chronic disease impacts the U.S. population, to identify public health priorities, or to track the progress of preventive efforts. A Nationwide Framework for Surveillance of Cardiovascular and Chronic Lung Diseases outlines a conceptual framework for building a national chronic disease surveillance system focused primarily on cardiovascular and chronic lung diseases. This system should be capable of providing data on disparities in incidence and prevalence of the diseases by race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and geographic region, along with data on disease risk factors, clinical care delivery, and functional health outcomes. This coordinated surveillance system is needed to integrate and expand existing information across the multiple levels of decision making in order to generate actionable, timely knowledge for a range of stakeholders at the local, state or regional, and national levels. The recommendations presented in A Nationwide Framework for Surveillance of Cardiovascular and Chronic Lung Diseases focus on data collection, resource allocation, monitoring activities, and implementation. The report also recommends that systems evolve along with new knowledge about emerging risk factors, advancing technologies, and new understanding of the basis for disease. This report will inform decision-making among federal health agencies, especially the Department of Health and Human Services; public health and clinical practitioners; non-governmental organizations; and policy makers, among others.

It provides basic medical information for practitioners, especially those performing in outpatient settings who may be unfamiliar with these conditions, and gives psychologists clear, practical answers to the following questions: What is this disease? What is its impact on this person's life? How, as a psychologist, should I assess and treat this person? In this book readers will learn to identify common symptoms of respiratory dysfunction, and the basic features of common pulmonary diseases including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, fibrosis and pneumoconiosis, pulmonary arterial hypertension, sarcoidosis, cystic fibrosis, and sleep apnea. Common medical treatments are described, along with environmental and occupational exposures that can exacerbate symptoms, as well as the impacts of gender, racial, and environmental factors. Chapters examine psychological evaluation and treatment, with a particular focus on anxiety and depression, the two most common comorbid mental health conditions. Cognitive and behavior treatments, psychotropic medications, and anti-smoking interventions are discussed, as are the mental health effects of chronic pulmonary disease on family members and friends, end-of-life issues, ethical and professional issues"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clinical practice related to sleep problems and sleep disorders has been expanding rapidly in the last few years, but scientific research is not keeping pace. Sleep apnea, insomnia, and restless legs syndrome are three examples of very common disorders for which we have little biological information. This new book cuts across a variety of medical disciplines such as neurology, pulmonology, pediatrics, internal medicine, psychiatry, psychology, otolaryngology, and nursing, as well as other medical practices with an interest in the management of sleep pathology. This area of research is not limited to very young and old patientsâ€"sleep disorders reach across all ages and ethnicities. Sleep Disorders and Sleep Deprivation presents a structured analysis that explores the following: Improving awareness among the general public and health care professionals. Increasing investment in interdisciplinary somnology and sleep medicine research training and mentoring activities. Validating and developing new and existing technologies for diagnosis and treatment. This book will be of interest to those looking to learn more about the enormous public health burden of sleep disorders and sleep deprivation and the strikingly limited capacity of the health care enterprise to identify and treat the majority of individuals suffering from sleep problems.

Book excerpt: "Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive and degenerative lung disease that is characterized by frequent exacerbations and remissions of shortness of breath. Individuals suffering from COPD experience an array of debilitating and oftentimes unpredictable symptoms, which can lead to depression, anxiety, and uncertainty. The significance of this disease cannot be understated due to its effects on health care costs and most importantly, the quality of life and outcomes in those suffering from COPD. This study will systematically identify and evaluate psychosocial interventions used to reduce anxiety in COPD patients. Previous research on the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions in reducing anxiety is limited. The purpose of this systematic review is to contribute to an existing knowledge base on the efficacy of psychosocial interventions used to reduce anxiety in COPD patients. Through this systematic review, research is reviewed and analyzed to increase understanding on the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions in the reduction of anxiety in COPD patients."--Page iv, that is vii.
