Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of the dislocation density by a chemical etching technique in high-purity copper single crystals were related to applied flow stress and yield stress. The results were interpreted by the model of Seeger for pure metals in which the flow stress consists of a temperature, strain rate dependent component arising from the thermally activated motion of glide dislocations, and a dislocation dependent component arising from the elastic stress interactions of glide dislocations. The activation energy calculated from the forest mechanism was 0.9 ev, consistent with the formation energy of jogs due to dislocation intersection. The flow stress was found to increase parabolically with dislocation density in accord with the Seeger model. Observations of individual dislocation motion and mechanical polygonization after plastic stress were also made. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study is described of the strain-rate sensitivity of the flow stress of Cu single crystals in all stages of deformation and over a wide temperature range. The curves relating the increase in flow stress on increasing the strain-rate by a fixed amount to the flow stress are generally divisible into three regions a, b and c. Region a is linear and characteristic of easy glide. At the end of this region the rate of stress increase with strain increases, and a transition region, b, occurs in which the stress increase varies with flow stress much more slowly than in easy glide. Another linear region, c, of the stress increase versus flow stress, of intermediate slope, begins during stage II and is characteristic of the latter part of stage II and of stage III of the work-hardening curves. The lower the test temperature, the greater is the range in stage II in which the linear region c applies. There is no change in the curves of the stress increase versus flow stress at the onset of stage III. The slope of region c is similar for crystals deforming by single or double slip, and is of the same order of magnitude as that for polycrystals. The results agree with those of previous workers in that the temperature dependence of the flow stress is greater during easy glide than in stages II and III. The two linear regions, a and c, are thought to correspond to two different arrangements of dislocations, the transition from one type of arrangement to the other taking place in region b. (Author).

Book Synopsis The Rate Dependence of Structure Evolution in Copper and Its Influence on the Stress-strain Behavior at Very High Strain Rates by :
Download or read book The Rate Dependence of Structure Evolution in Copper and Its Influence on the Stress-strain Behavior at Very High Strain Rates written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A model for the deformation of copper over a wide range of strain rates has been modified to account for the contribution of dislocation drag at high strain rates. The main effect of adding this mechanism is found in the near yield region at strain rates exceeding 103 s−1. However, even at strain rates as high as 106 s−1 the rate controlling deformation mechanism at strains greater than roughly epsilon=0.1 is thermal activation. It is postulated that the high stresses predicted at yield when the strain rates are raised above 103 s−1 may lead to the rapid dislocation accumulation rates that have been found experimentally and which lead to the increased strain-rate sensitivity reported to copper and other metals at these strain rates.

Download or read book Development of Microstructure and Its Relationship to the Mechanical Properties of Drawn Copper written by R. B. Nethercott and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dislocation microstructures formed during drawing of copper to strains up to 7, at deformation temperature between 77 and 473K, have been investigated, together with their relationship to the resulting mechanical properties. The changes in microstructure and tensile flow stress are explained by dynamic recovery and recrystallization processes; correlations of mechanical properties are made with parameters describing the dislocation microstructure. Book excerpt: The last two decades have seen a steady and impressive development, and eventual industrial acceptance, of the high energy-rate manufact turing techniques based on the utilisation of energy available in an explo sive charge. Not only has it become economically viable to fabricate complex shapes and integrally bonded composites-which otherwise might not have been obtainable easily, if at all-but also a source of reasonably cheap energy and uniquely simple techniques, that often dispense with heavy equipment, have been made available to the engineer and applied scientist. The consolidation of theoretical knowledge and practical experience which we have witnessed in this area of activity in the last few years, combined with the growing industrial interest in the explosive forming, welding and compacting processes, makes it possible and also opportune to present, at this stage, an in-depth review of the state of the art. This book is a compendium of monographic contributions, each one of which represents a particular theoretical or industrial facet of the explosive operations. The contributions come from a number of practising engineers and scientists who seek to establish the present state of knowledge in the areas of the formation and propagation of shock and stress waves in metals, their metallurgical effects, and the methods of experimental assessment of these phenomena.
Book Synopsis Fundamental Aspects of Dislocation Interactions by : G. Kostorz
Download or read book Fundamental Aspects of Dislocation Interactions written by G. Kostorz and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamental Aspects of Dislocation Interactions: Low-Energy Dislocation Structures III covers the papers presented at a European Research Conference on Plasticity of Materials-Fundamental Aspects of Dislocation Interactions: Low-Energy Dislocation Structures III, held on August 30-September 4, 1992 in Ascona, Switzerland. The book focuses on the processes, technologies, reactions, transformations, and approaches involved in dislocation interactions. The selection first offers information on work softening and Hall-Petch hardening in extruded mechanically alloyed alloys and dynamic origin of dislocation structures in deformed solids. Discussions focus on stress-strain behavior in relation to composition, structure, and annealing; comparison of stress-strain curves with work softening theory; sweeping and trapping mechanism; and model of dipolar wall structure formation. The text then ponders on plastic instabilities and their relation to fracture and dislocation and kink dynamics in f.c.c. metals studied by mechanical spectroscopy. The book takes a look at misfit dislocation generation mechanisms in heterostructures and evolution of dislocation structure on the interfaces associated with diffusionless phase transitions. Discussions focus on dislocation representation of a wall of elastic domains; equation of equilibrium of an elastic domain; transformation of dislocations; and theoretical and experimental background. The selection is a valuable reference for readers interested in dislocation interactions.
