Book Synopsis Practicing Psychotherapy by : Michael Franz Basch
Download or read book Practicing Psychotherapy written by Michael Franz Basch and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 1992-06-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can one engage the hostile or the frightened patient or the patient incapacitated by shame or by physical illness? How can a clinician focus a therapy that threatens to wander indefinitely and unproductively: When and how should one use short-term therapy?Even experienced, talented therapists frequently find themselves stymied, often for prolonged periods of time, by problems commonly encountered in an office-based practice. Here, along with detailed case examples, is a hands-on demonstration of how to deal with such complex, at times seemingly intractable, problems.Basch's technique is a psychodynamic approach that also embraces cognitive and behavioral therapy. It correlates what is heard and seen in the therapist's consulting room with our knowledge of normal infant and child development. This book shows how Basch's developmental method can be used even in short-term therapy to deal with complex problems. The book also includes extensive examples of the supervisory process, demonstrating how to make the best use of this model for therapy, both as supervisor and supervisee.Basch's first book, Doing Psychotherapy, has become a standard introductory text and his second book, Understanding Psychotherapy: The Science Behind the Art, has gained widespread support and garnered much acclaim. Building on the principles elaborated in his previous books, this eminently practical new book takes readers to a new level of understanding.

This book was released on 1997-10-01 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Office of Science and Technology (OST) of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Office of Environmental Management (EM) recently has instituted a peer review program that uses the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), with administrative and technical support provided by the Institute for Regulatory Science (RSI), to conduct peer reviews of technologies (or groups of technologies) at various stages of development. OST asked the NRC to convene an expert committee to evaluate the effectiveness of its new peer review program and to make specific recommendations to improve the program, if appropriate. This is the first of two reports to be prepared by this committee on OST's new peer review program. OST requested this interim report to provide a preliminary assessment of OST's new peer review program. In the final report, the committee will provide a more detailed assessment of OST's peer review program after its first complete annual cycle.

Book Synopsis Review of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection Operations Support Tool for Water Supply by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book Review of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection Operations Support Tool for Water Supply written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-12-11 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York City's water supply system is one of the oldest, largest, and most complex in the nation. It delivers more than 1.1 billion gallons of water each day from three upstate watersheds (Croton, Catskill, and Delaware) to meet the needs of more than eight million people in the City, one million people in Westchester, Putnam, Orange, and Ulster counties, and millions of commuters and tourists who visit the City throughout the year. The Catskill and Delaware portions, which make up about 90 percent of the supply, receive no filtration or treatment other than disinfection, except for rare instances of high turbidity when a coagulant is added to increase deposition of suspended solids. The remaining 10 percent of the supply comes from the Croton watershed and receives treatment via filtration. The drinking water supply is managed by the Bureau of Water Supply within the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYC DEP). To continue to avoid filtration of the Catskill/Delaware portion of the water supply, in 2007, NYC DEP reexamined its control of turbidity in the Catskill portion of the water supply, including both structural improvements to the system and operational changes. The Operations Support Tool (OST) was developed as part of these efforts. OST couples models of reservoir operations and water quality; it uses real-time data on streamflow, snow pack, water quality, reservoir levels, diversions, and releases; and it incorporates streamflow forecastsâ€"all in order to predict future reservoir levels, water delivery to customers, and water quality within the system. These predictions inform the system operators, who then make decisions based on the most current data and forecasts. This report reviews the use of OST in current and future reservoir operations. It considers potential ways in which the City can more effectively use OST, makes recommendations for additional performance measures, and reviews the potential effects of climate change on the City's water supply to help identify and enhance understanding of areas of potential future concern with regard to the use of OST.

This book was released on 2013-04-14 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with the development of the atomic bomb during World War II, the United States continued to build nuclear weapons throughout the Cold War. Thousands of people mined and milled uranium, conducted research on nuclear warfare, or worked in nuclear munitions factories around the country from the 1940s through the 1980s. Such work continues today, albeit to a smaller extent. The Department of Energy (DOE) is now responsible for overseeing those sites and facilities, many of which were, and continue to be, run by government contractors. The materials used at those sites were varied and ranged from the benign to the toxic and highly radioactive. Workers at DOE facilities often did not know the identity of the materials with which they worked and often were unaware of health risks related to their use. In many instances, the work was considered top secret, and employees were cautioned not to reveal any work-related information to family or others. Workers could be exposed to both radioactive and nonradioactive toxic substances for weeks or even years. Consequently, some of the workers have developed health problems and continue to have concerns about potential health effects of their exposures to occupational hazards during their employment in the nuclear weapons industry. In response to the concerns expressed by workers and their representatives, DOL asked the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to review the SEM database and its use of a particular database, Haz-Map, as the source of its toxic substance-occupational disease links. Accordingly, this IOM consensus report reflects careful consideration of its charge by the committee, and describes the strengths and shortcomings of both. To complete its task, IOM formed an ad hoc committee of experts in occupational medicine, toxicology, epidemiology, industrial hygiene, public health, and biostatistics to conduct an 18-month study to review the scientific rigor of the SEM database. The committee held two public meetings at which it heard from DOL Division of Energy Employee Occupational Illness Compensation (DEEOIC) representatives, the DOL contractor that developed the SEM database, the developer of the Haz-Map database, DOE worker advocacy groups, and several individual workers. The committee also submitted written questions to DOL to seek clarification of specific issues and received written responses from DEEOIC. The committee's report considers both the strengths and weaknesses of the SEM and the Haz-Map databases, recognizing that the latter was developed first and for a different purpose. The committee then discusses its findings and recommends improvements that could be made in both databases with a focus on enhancing the usability of SEM for both DOL claims examiners and for former DOE workers and their representatives. Review of the Department of Labor's Site Exposure Matrix Database summarizes the committee's findings.
