Book excerpt: In the 2010 Comprehensive Spending Review the Coalition Government announced its decision to achieve the internationally agreed target of providing 0.7 percent of Gross National Income as ODA from 2013. This will involve spending an additional 2.5 billion pounds in 2013-14 to make the total DFID budget 11.3 billion pounds in that year. There will be a large increase in spending on fragile and conflict affected states and it will be difficult to ensure that every pound is well spent in such war-torn environments. When scrutinising DFID's accounts the MPs were also surprised to discover that the Pope's visit was paid for in part by money supposed to be for overseas development aid (ODA). The Committee expects a response from the Government as to what the £1.85 million, transferred to the Foreign Office for the papal visit, was spent on and an explanation as to how this was ODA compliant. The Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR) announced reductions in DFID's running costs to 2% of the total budget. If achieved, this would make DFID the most cost-efficient development organisation in the world. This is to be achieved by a large reduction in back office administration costs (which excludes front-line staff) of £34 million over the CSR period. The International Development Committee supports the proposals to make savings in back office staff, but the MPs are warning that Ministers must ensure that reduced administration budgets do not affect the ability to deliver aid programmes on the ground. While declining as a share of total costs, running costs will increase in real terms over the next four years because the total budget will rise so much.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global climate change is a natural process that currently appears to be strongly influenced by human activities, which increase atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHG). Agriculture contributes about 20% of the world’s global radiation forcing from carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, and produces 50% of the methane and 70% of the nitrous oxide of the human-induced emission. Managing Agricultural Greenhouse Gases synthesizes the wealth of information generated from the GRACEnet (Greenhouse gas Reduction through Agricultural Carbon Enhancement network) effort with contributors from a variety of backgrounds, and reports findings with important international applications. Frames responses to challenges associated with climate change within the geographical domain of the U.S., while providing a useful model for researchers in the many parts of the world that possess similar ecoregions Covers not only soil C dynamics but also nitrous oxide and methane flux, filling a void in the existing literature Educates scientists and technical service providers conducting greenhouse gas research, industry, and regulators in their agricultural research by addressing the issues of GHG emissions and ways to reduce these emissions Synthesizes the data from top experts in the world into clear recommendations and expectations for improvements in the agricultural management of global warming potential as an aggregate of GHG emissions

Book excerpt: TERI Energy & Environment Data Diary and Yearbook (TEDDY) is an annual publication brought out by TERI since 1986. It is the only comprehensive energy and environment yearbook in India that provides updated information on the energy supply sectors (coal and lignite, petroleum and natural gas, power, and renewable energy sources), energy demand sectors (agriculture, industry, transport, household, buildings), and environment (local and global). Recent changes in the energy sector and environment are depicted with the help of graphs, figures, maps, and tables. The publication also reviews government policies associated with energy and environment. TEDDY 2019/20 gives an account of India’s commercial energy balances, extensively covering energy flows within different sectors of the economy and how they have been changing over time. These energy balances and conversion factors are a valuable reference for researchers, scholars, and organizations engaged in energy and related sectors. Contents of the book are organized into three sections—Energy Supply, Energy Demand, and Local and Global Environment. Interlinkage of SDGs with energy and environment also forms the subject matter of TEDDY 2019/20. The thirty fifth edition continues to remain less prose intensive with inclusion of more data, represented with the help of infographics, thus making the publication an authentic and interesting read. Key Features: • Provides a review of government policies, programmes and initiatives that have implications for the petroleum and natural gas sector and the Indian economy • New chapters on Air Pollution, Solid Waste Management, Water Resource Management, and Land and Forest Resource Management • Exhaustive data from energy supply, energy demand, and local and global environment sectors Contents: Energy and environment: an overview Energy supply: Coal and lignite • Petroleum and natural gas • Power • Renewable energy Energy demand: Agriculture • Industry • Transport • Household energy • Buildings Local and global environment: Air quality and pollution • Solid waste management • Water resource management • Land and forest resource management • Climate change Audience: Researchers and Professionals from industries, government organizations, and public sector undertakings. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporate Governance and the Nuclear Industry explores the UK nuclear Legacy - governance issues associated with the decommissioning of a range of early-generation civil nuclear facilities. This book traces how we got here and the risks that have been taken, whilst presenting new research and thinking that is required to manage our nuclear Legacy. The book addresses a new analytical approach using notions of governance to review key historic events. This approach analyses these events using concepts of stakeholder control, accountability and regulation. Using these concepts and undertaking a more detailed analysis of the Legacy’s current governance arrangements; the conventional public sector-based solutions that attempt to harness private sector expertise, this book will contrast these with government responses to determine the degree of control over the Legacy and any possible control issues. Corporate Governance and the Nuclear Industry concludes that we need to recognise the legacy’s problems as exceptional rather than prosaic, and suggests that this requires exceptional governance solutions rather than the current form that is clearly failing.

This book was released on 2020-11-11 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Additionally, the publication reviews government policies and analyses latest policy discourses that have implications on India’s energy and environment sector. TEDDY 2018/19 gives an account of India’s commercial energy balances, extensively covering energy flows within different sectors of the economy and how they have been changing over time. These energy balances and conversion factors are a valuable reference for researchers, scholars, and organizations engaged in energy and related sectors. After the introductory chapter, TEDDY 2018/19 is divided into three sections—Energy Supply, Energy Demand, and Local and Global Environment. One of the main highlights of TEDDY 2018/19 is the addition of a new chapter—Buildings—under Energy Demand section. This chapter gives an in-depth analysis of India’s energy consumption by the buildings sector, and highlights the role of energy efficiency in buildings from the perspectives of both economy and environment. The thirty-fourth edition of TEDDY continues to remain less prose intensive with inclusion of more data, represented with the help of infographics, thus making the publication an authentic and interesting read. TEDDY 2018/19 also features a section on interlinkages of SDGs with energy and environment.
