Book excerpt: "This is the first major theoretical study of the four main figures of the New York School: John Ashbery, Frank O'Hara, Kenneth Koch, and James Schuyler. Proposing a reinterpretation of the definition of the avant-garde, William Watkin describes it as a movement typified by its commitment to art in process, over the final art product. In a series of in-depth, and wide-reaching, readings, he then goes on to test this assertion in detailed relation to the poetry of the New York School, while also examining how the poets' own work further develops and analyses the concept of the avant-garde in contemporary culture."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: This handbook will prepare you to take the lead in executing your own publicity plan. It is designed to guide you, step-by-step, through the process of making a success of your book. It’s jam-packed with the essential tools, ideas, and resources you’ll need to achieve that goal, from an independent publisher who has provided a launching pad for authors like Ilya Kaminsky, Aimee Nezhukumatathil, Jennifer Michael Hecht, Maggie Smith, Matthew Zapruder, and 250 others. You’ll learn the essentials for book marketing as an indie author in a digital age: —Develop your author image and brand across social channels —Create an engaging social media presence —Grow your audience and meaningfully connect with them —Build an attractive, searchable website—no coding skills needed —Launch a publicity campaign that gets you reviews —Ensure your book is on bookstore and library shelves —Practice mindful literary citizenship —Learn from Tupelo authors (who were in your shoes not too long ago!) All authors desire to get their books into the hands of as many readers as possible. Though it is a publisher’s role to aid and assist authors in marketing and publicity for every book, the role of any publisher necessarily takes a back seat to your all-important efforts. Nobody else can do this essential work as effectively as you can. Thoroughly and joyfully embrace the notion of self-promotion, knowing that it’s the book—your book—you’re breathing life into. You wouldn’t have written and published your book if you didn’t believe in it, and in yourself, as a writer with important artistic talent to share. Your publisher believes in you. Your family and friends believe in you. Your current readers believe in you. And future readers will believe in you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sestina (of medieval French origin) is a complex poetic form of 39 lines (six sestets and a three-line "envoy") in which the six end-words (teleutons) of the lines of the first sestet stanza are repeated in a specific order as teleutons in the five succeeding sestets. In the envoy, the six teleutons are again picked up, one of them being buried in, and one finishing, each line. Because of the complexity of the form, the sestina fell out of favor with poets for several decades. However, a twenty-first century revival of the form is underway. This is the first anthology of sestinas that showcases both traditional and innovative examples of the form by modern and contemporary poets, award winners, and emerging writers alike. Organized by such themes as Americana; Art; Love and Sex; and Memory, Contemplation, Retrospection, and Death, the collection also includes sestinas with irregular teleutons and unconventional sestinas. An evocative introduction by Marilyn Krysl acquaints readers with the form. The volume concludes with useful indexes of first lines and teleutons, increasing access to the poems beyond the poets' names.
