Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early Americans have long been considered "A People of the Book" Because the nickname was coined primarily to invoke close associations between Americans and the Bible, it is easy to overlook the central fact that it was a book-not a geographic location, a monarch, or even a shared language-that has served as a cornerstone in countless investigations into the formation and fragmentation of early American culture. Few books can lay claim to such powers of civilization-altering influence. Among those which can are sacred books, and for Americans principal among such books stands the Bible. This Handbook is designed to address a noticeable void in resources focused on analyzing the Bible in America in various historical moments and in relationship to specific institutions and cultural expressions. It takes seriously the fact that the Bible is both a physical object that has exercised considerable totemic power, as well as a text with a powerful intellectual design that has inspired everything from national religious and educational practices to a wide spectrum of artistic endeavors to our nation's politics and foreign policy. This Handbook brings together a number of established scholars, as well as younger scholars on the rise, to provide a scholarly overview--rich with bibliographic resources--to those interested in the Bible's role in American cultural formation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is not much enjoyment in contemplating a single piece from a jigsaw puzzle. It may create some level of interest—but not much. Even looking at three pieces, or even ten pieces, isn’t that interesting. What makes a jigsaw puzzle attention-grabbing is the process of figuring out how the pieces fit together. Slowly, a pleasant, unified, comprehensible picture begins to appear. The more complete that image becomes, the more anxious we are to grab another piece and see where and how it fits. In some ways, the books and stories of the Old Testament are like the pieces to a jigsaw puzzle. In and of themselves they create some level of interest—but they don’t become attention-grabbing until we begin to see how the individual pieces relate to the whole. For many, the study of the Old Testament may never reach beyond looking at the individual pieces. Nothing fits the pieces together. How is the book of Leviticus connected to the book of Hebrews? How is John’s reason for writing his Gospel related to Psalm 2? How do we connect the covenant ceremony of Genesis 15 with the cross—much less understand that ceremony to begin with? Why is the book of Ruth included as part of the Bible? What does it have to do with anything? Or better yet, why do we have the book of Esther—where God is not mentioned at all? What makes each of these important? How are they related, or are they? In short, how is God’s story—God’s revelation—unified? And that’s where A Forty-Day Study of the Biblical Story comes in. We journey through Scripture in a way that brings all of the bits and pieces into a unified whole—because our focus is going to be on what makes the Biblical Story whole: Jesus Christ. We examine the Old Testament through the lens of what we learn about Jesus.

Book excerpt: Peyton Manning is America’s quarterback. And America loves a great comeback story. Less than two years after Manning was fired from the Indianapolis Colts, he led the Denver Broncos to the Super Bowl and won pro football’s Most Valuable Player award for the fifth time. In 2013, Manning broke the league record for touchdown passes in a single season, despite a body weakened by multiple neck surgeries that threatened to end his career. Manning did it against all odds, in a manner inspirational to any football fan—or anybody who has ever lost a job and been forced to start over. This second edition of No Plan B follows Manning’s remarkable season with the Broncos on a wild ride to the championship game. Through it all, from the suspension of a star teammate to the heart ailment of his head coach, Manning carried the Broncos to 15 victories and, even in an agonizing defeat at the Super Bowl, reminded us why he is one of America’s most beloved role models. Retire? No way. At age 38, Manning’s lone goal is: Win it all.

This book is about Jim Minton’s journey of figuring out how to raise his kids and learning a lot about himself in the process. When Jim’s children were born, he focused on raising Division I athletes who would make him look good. He started off as that obnoxious dad we have all witnessed at sporting events. He ended up with thirteen principles for improving himself, plus three amazing kids who bring him great joy as they walk in the truth. Jim loves good quotes. He kept a list on the refrigerator as his kids grew up, many of them coming from legendary basketball coach John Wooden. Jim knew his kids were going to find the bad stuff on their phones and in the culture; it was up to him to get the good stuff in front of them. Along the way, Jim discovered that the Bible is the owner’s manual he was looking for.

Having parents who love you unconditionally was God’s first manifestation to me and what I will cherish the most from him. My journey to a deeper relationship evolved much later in my fifties. The twists and left turns began once I became a woman in my early teens. It was then I began to navigate through life ignoring the GPS (God’s perfect solutions) for my life. It was Jesus who kept me and that still small voice who guided me time and time again out of my detours, roadblocks, potholes, fender benders, and the head-on collisions that I willingly drove right into before giving Jesus full control of me. God’s love, mercy, and amazing grace continue to manifest in my life today. Jesus continues turning me right and keeping me straight and focused on his love, which is for all who believe in Christ Jesus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their Dialectic of Enlightenment, Horkheimer and Adorno set out to "explain why humanity, instead of entering a truly human state, is sinking into a new kind of barbarism." Philosophy teacher Tom Donovan (PhD UCRiverside) offers a fresh reading of that classic text showing that it is first and foremost a critique of the metaphysical urge. Describing our world of "stupid consumption, mindless entertainment, and perverted games and relationships" he notes, "these sorts of games have no end game, as fantasy spectators never really win, and yet they don’t see it because they are too busy watching the other lose. This is the secret of class society. As long as there is someone below you, then lack of reconciliation doesn’t hurt so badly." Citing the Super Bowl, Clippers owner Donald Sterling, basketball players like LeBron James, plus the Kardashians, mega churches, and comedians like Jon Stewart, Donovan gives us a new understanding of our age and how the broken threads that are today’s Capitalism, religion, and sports contribute to unraveling the fabric of Modernity. Against readings that claim that Dialectic of Enlightenment is a simple critique of instrumental reason that ultimately undermines rationality itself, Dr. Donovan argues that the real critique is aimed at the metaphysical urge itself. As such, rationality itself is not the target of attack nor is the notion of enlightenment. Taking Adorno's and Horkheimer's example of the Marquis de Sade, the author observes, "…Sade can only find pleasure in domination. The fear of the outside has morphed into fear of a reconciled world, fear of a world where everyone treats each other as ends in themselves. A society like this can tolerate porn but not socialism, a society like this won’t miss the ice-caps but wouldn't miss the Super Bowl, a society like this lets civilization sink into barbarism so long as they can watch The Bachelor. Stylistically this book attempts to rationally mimic the fragmentary nature of Dialectic of Enlightenment so that through form and content the argument of the book will emerge dialectically. Readers will see that Dialectic of Enlightenment actually offers a positive conception of enlightenment and a philosophical instance of the use of dialectics. The book is for readers interested in critiques of capitalism and religion, and sports in America, as well as Marxism and Critical Theory. It will intrigue academics interested in the Frankfurt School and the idea of the "Metaphysical Urge."
