Book excerpt: Excerpt from Denny Genealogy, Vol. 2: The Descendants of William Denny of Chester County, Pennsylvania, and Allied Families of Culbertskon, Gaston, McNair, Rodgers, Walker and Many Others Many persons, whose biographies appear in this book, also supplied records of their ancestors. The late Mrs. Mary (smith) Brinker was untiring in sending recollections of early days in Pickaway County, Ohio. Mrs. W. A. Phillips, a resident of Terre Haute, for eighty-seven years, has done the same for Dennys of Vigo County, Indiana. Mr. Charles Pinkerton, of Mt. Kisco, New York, gave access to an amazing manuscript book written by his uncle, Samuel Stanhope Smith Pinkerton. Mrs. Dorothy (greve) Jarnagin, of Athens, Georgia, supplied old Bible records and wrote the biography of her mother, Mrs. Jeanette Sterling (smith) Greve. Mrs. David Hart, of Leonia, New Jersey, assisted with the index. None of our own ancestors is recorded in this book. Begun as an academic study, as the original and unrecorded docu ments were discovered. The work became of absorbing interest. We hope the reading of it will bring profit and pleasure. It is an authentic social history of colonial and post-colonial times as seen through the life of two family groups, who bear the name and blood of Denny. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Denny Genealogy, Vol. 3: The Descendants of David Denny, Sr. Of Pennsylvania and the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and Allied Families of Brunk, Campbell, Davis, Gaither, Guthrie, Hubbard, Lockhart, Lunsford, Stone, Washington, Weller and Many Others Of David, Sr., in order not to omit descendants of married daughters. Customary abbreviations saved additional space. Lists of children are printed in smaller type, as is done in many Of the best genealogies. When these space saving devices still proved inadequate, we decided to carry forward to the next generation only those children of a couple who were known to have grand children. Thus, in many cases, all descendants Of a couple are printed as a part of that couple's biography, placing whole groups in their family setting. We hope that these devices, which have allowed us to include every name sent us, will meet with approval. A summary of the descendants of David, Jr., with references to First Book for details, is also given. The result is that every discovered descendant of David Denny, Sr., is encompassed in this one volume. We have used the Same system of numbering throughout the Series. Consult the Index for the desired name. Turn to the page number. Each person known to have children and grandchildren is assigned an Arabic number, used first under the parents and in the next generation it heads the biography. Children and grand children are listed under their parents in order of birth and are given a Roman numeral. By following Arabic numerals back and forward a complete direct lineage may be found. Thirty years has gone into gathering and writing this record. We inherited corre spondence our grandfather, Col. William R. Denny, of Winchester, Virginia, had with others of the family, who were as ignorant as he Of their original ancestor, David Denny, Sr. Our father, Bishop Collins Denny and aunt, Mrs. Mary Denny Campbell, left us some correspondence on the subject. We also had access to the record written by Judge Robert Denny, Of Indianapolis, which was printed in 1886, in C. C. Denny's Denny Genealogy in England and America. With this Slender material as a starting point our search began. We have visited most of the great genea logical libraries On the eastern seaboard and some as far west as Chicago. Archives in government Offices in Washington, DC, and County and State Archives in Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Vir ginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana have been closely searched. For points farther west we have depended on helpful members Of the family clan. We have corresponded withpeople in every state of the Union. In Second Book we were pleased to mention by name persons, not connected with the family, who had been helpful. To these Should be added Miss Lulie Davis, Secretary Of Washington County Historical Society, Salem, In diana, who efficiently planned for our visit to that County and gave hours of her time and attention helping us with our search. We must also especially thank Eugene E. Vann for his editorial criticism. The patient and loyal endurance of our husbands and children has sometimes been strained but never broken. Without their co-operation these books could not have been written. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Denny Genealogy While the writers of this work have desired to present a formal bibliography, and a list of documentary sources, considerations of space prevent their inclusion. We wish, however, to make a state ment as to the origins of the facts contained in this Denny Geneal ogy, and to be contained in the subsequent book on the family history; announced in An Explanation herein, for publication in 1945. For the introductory chapters we have made use of hundreds of published volumes, found in the New York Public Library, the Library of Congress, and in many other public and private libraries. The Reverend Sir Henry Lyttleton Lyster Denny of England and Sir Maurice Denny of Scotland very kindly have furnished valuable material which they secured from original documents in the British Isles. In our search in this country for facts about the early genera tions, we have made personal examination of the records of Chester, Lancaster, and Cumberland Counties in Pennsylvania, of Ohio County, West Virginia, of Frederick and other Shenandoah Valley Counties in Virginia, and of Ross and Pickaway Counties, in Ohio. Material from County records in many other States was furnished by correspondents. Personal investigation also was made in various Government Offices in Washington, the Congressional Library, and the Library there of the Daughters of the American Revolution. This last deserves special mention on account of its most helpful and exhaustive index. The Virginia and Pennsylvania State Libraries were used extensively, as well as the Library in Phila delphia of the Pennsylvania Historical Society. Also, many local historical societies were visited. Published records of other States were used, whenever found. Many illuminating facts have been sent us by living members of the family, quoting from old family letters and diaries of past generations. They, also, have sent copies of Bible Family Records, going back, in some cases, to the Revolutionary War. Some aged correspondents have been indefatigable in their efforts to furnishrecords, and, also, have included their personal recollections. Only in extreme instances has family tradition been depended on as a major source, and, then, mentioned only as probability. We have made trips to cemeteries, churches, and many homes in many States, to secure facts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genealogy of the Denny Family in England and America: Descendants of John Denny of Combs, Suffolk, England in 1439 My brother, Joseph A. Denny of Leicester, Mass., died early in the year of 1875. He had long manifested a deep interest in the history of his ancestors, and had from time to time, as he had opportunity, collected statistics of names, dates of birth, &c., of all the different branches of his fathers family with whom he had intercourse. Mrs. Grace Denny's letters to her son Daniel, written from her home in England, which had come into his possession, induced him to pursue his investigations the other side of the Atlantic, and having ascertained that the name was still known there, he visited England in the summer of 1874 for the purpose of obtaining all the information he could in regard to the Denny family. Previous to this time nothing was known in this country of the ancestry of Daniel Denny, who was the first to emigrate to America, except what was revealed in the letters of Mrs. Grace, above referred to. He visited the old homestead in Combs, and found it still in the possession of the descendants of Denny, whose ancestors owned and occupied it more than four hundred years before. The result of this visit was the unearthing from old tin trunks and boxes, wills, deeds and other documents, that brought to light what was before unknown to any then living, the history of the family for four centuries.
