Book excerpt: Caught pants down by a dance hostress in a Laotian nightclub; hitching a ride into battle with a chain-smoking pilot in a plane filled with cans of leaking kerosene; fielding cables that arrive in the dead of night from an editor screaming for urgent copy overnight… It’s all in a day’s work for the foreign correspondent, says author Dennis Bloodworth, who ought to know. He took it all in his stride during the more than 30 years that he spent as foreign correspondent of the London Observer. For those who have always wondered how the news gets into the papers, here’s the story behind the stories, and even some stories that couldn’t be told

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The novels of Paul Auster—finely wrought, self-reflexive, filled with doublings, coincidences, and mysteries—have captured the imagination of readers and the admiration of many critics of contemporary literature. In Beyond the Red Notebook, the first book devoted to the works of Auster, Dennis Barone has assembled an international group of scholars who present twelve essays that provide a rich and insightful examination of Auster's writings. The authors explore connections between Auster's poetry and fiction, the philosophical underpinnings of his writing, its relation to detective fiction, and its unique embodiment of the postmodern sublime. Their essays provide the fullest analysis available of Auster's themes of solitude, chance, and paternity found in works such as The Invention of Solitude, City of Glass, Ghosts, The Locked Room, In the Country of Last Things, Moon Palace, The Music of Chance, and Leviathan. This volume includes contributions from Pascal Bruckner, Marc Chenetier, Norman Finkelstein, Derek Rubin, Madeleine Sorapure, Stephen Bernstein, Tim Woods, Steven Weisenburger, Arthur Saltzman, Eric Wirth, and Motoyuki Shibata. The extensive bibliography, prepared by William Drenttel, will greatly benefit both scholars and general readers.

This book was released on 2012-11-02 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Report deals with matters arising from a complaint against Rt Hon Denis MacShane made on 29 June 2008, relating to expense claims made between 2005 and 2008. The Committee agreed that the conduct of Mr MacShane should be reported to the Metropolitan Police, though the police decided as a result of their inquiries to take no action. The Report states that this was the gravest case which has come to the Committee for adjudication. It sets out the Committee's views and reasoning clearly, and is accompanied by the detailed memorandum from the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, as well as Mr MacShane's response. The Committee concluded that Mr MacShane was in breach of the Code of Conduct in withdrawing his co-operation by declining at the conclusion of this inquiry to attend an interview and to answer a specific question about his invoices. He was also in breach of the Green Book rules for the 19 claims he made from 2004-05 to 2007-08, totalling £12,900 against his incidental expenses provision and further in breach of the rules in buying computers between 2004-05 and 2007-08 when the expenditure was not wholly, exclusively incurred on parliamentary duties.

Book excerpt: Dennis Cooper's writing has acquired a ferocious reputation for its bold experimentation, its transgressive content, and its emotional content, which is both Romantic and touching, whilst cold and hard-edged. For over twenty years Cooper has explored the boundaries of human living, and sexuality's centrality to that living. The extreme situations he develops in his writing bring out parts of gay experience that a consensual 'community' often shies away from, likewise the heterosexual mainstream. His most important genre is undoubtedly fiction, but Cooper has also written poetry, large quantities of journalistic works, notably for 'Artforum' and 'Spin', and, recently has had great success and recognition with theatrical works. The book enters deep into the worlds Cooper fabricates -- and into the coolness of his expression. This challenging work is addressed by a group of mostly young and new critical writers and academics who provide creative responses to Cooper's artistry. The contributions, which cover the breadth of Cooper's work, develop themes and devices that advance his profound and disturbing world view. In addition to the artistic responses, the topics in the critical pieces range from sexuality in the suburbs, to neurological responses to the work, via the limits and possibilities of bodies. Others look at the implications of contemporary electronic communication as outlined in Cooper's recent work, or the use of space. Cooper's writing receives a multi-faceted contextualisation, and his literary ideas are made accessible to any reader interested in learning why Cooper is today regarded as one of the foremost writers in expressing the psychological point behind the centrality of sexual expression.

They may even feel that their special, unique, and even sometimes bulletproof. In this tale, we have a prophecy. From a man who chose to displace himself from society. To live a simple life. He will relate to is grandson his dreams and visions. His grandson which was his soul relation. Of a set of the events that will change his grandson's way of life as he knew it. Yet his grandson knew deep down in his soul, that this was to be. He will meet not only his friends, but someone who knew they were very unique. His life will become entangled with someone who is cunning, dangerous, and very confident. So confident in fact that they truly believed that they were invincible.

It shows that specific formal techniques and devices and the overall form of literary texts always have an ethical dimension and beg certain ethical questions. Covering the three main genres of narrative, drama and poetry, the discussion addresses aspects of syntax, line breaks, mise-en-scene and narrative situation as well as the table of contents, list of characters and chapter structure in six texts by contemporary American authors (Paul Auster, Don DeLillo, Tony Kushner, Suzan-Lori Parks, John Ashbery and Jorie Graham).

This book was released on 2015-09-10 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canny, infuriating, cynical and generous by turns, Felix Dennis was a true one-off. When he died in 2014 he was a multi-millionaire. Yet he spent his last months writing poetry and planting the millionth tree in his own forest in Warwickshire. Journalist Fergus Byrne got to know him well in this time and was granted exclusive access to Dennis's archives and papers. He found everything had been kept and, along with hours of interviews with girlfriends, family, staff and friends the world over, he has now written the only authorised biography of a man who described himself as lucky to have led several lives. His early rebellious days started with dropping out of grammar school, playing in a rock 'n' roll band, and being imprisoned (with Richard Neville and Jim Anderson) for charges of obscenity relating to a priapic Rupert Bear in the 'schoolkids' issue of the magazine Oz. The launch of Kung-Fu magazine, created when Dennis spotted a queue at a Leicester Square cinema for a Bruce Lee film, changed his fortunes. An industrious and self-destructive era then followed. He moved to America, added the magazines MacUser and Maxim to his portfolio, but also discovered crack, hookers and S & M. When his lifestyle led him to hospital, he gave up the drugs overnight and took to writing poetry. He acquired a mansion in Warwickshire, bought a much loved home in Mustique from rock star David Bowie, gave generously to charities, planted the largest broadleaf forest in Britain, and published several volumes of verse promoted by very well received readings nationwide. This is a hugely readable account of one of the most extraordinary characters of our time.
