Book Synopsis British Romanticism, Climate Change, and the Anthropocene by : David Higgins
Download or read book British Romanticism, Climate Change, and the Anthropocene written by David Higgins and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first major ecocritical study of the relationship between British Romanticism and climate change. It analyses a wide range of texts – by authors including Lord Byron, William Cobbett, Sir Stamford Raffles, Mary Shelley, and Percy Shelley – in relation to the global crisis produced by the eruption of Mount Tambora in 1815. By connecting these texts to current debates in the environmental humanities, it reveals the value of a historicized approach to the Anthropocene. British Romanticism, Climate Change, and the Anthropocene examines how Romantic texts affirm the human capacity to shape and make sense of a world with which we are profoundly entangled and at the same time represent our humiliation by powerful elemental forces that we do not fully comprehend. It will appeal not only to scholars of British Romanticism, but to anyone interested in the relationship between culture and climate change.
Book Synopsis Sukuma Labor Songs from Western Tanzania by : Frank D. Gunderson
Download or read book Sukuma Labor Songs from Western Tanzania written by Frank D. Gunderson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is an interpretive analysis of a collection of 335 song texts treated as primary historical sources. The collection highlights the cultural practices that link music with labor in Sukuma communities in northwestern Tanzania. These linkages are evident in the music of the elephant, snake, and porcupine hunting associations that flourished in the precolonial epoch, in the nineteenth-century regional and long-distance porter associations, and in the farmer associations that have proliferated since the beginning of the twentieth century. Acting primarily as an interpretive editor, the author collaborated with several Tanzanian scholars and translators towards fine-tuning the translation of these texts into English, and gathered testimonies in order to create succinct interpretive statements about the songs.

Book Synopsis Romantic Genius and the Literary Magazine by : David Higgins
Download or read book Romantic Genius and the Literary Magazine written by David Higgins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-05-07 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early nineteenth-century Britain, there was unprecedented interest in the subject of genius, as well as in the personalities and private lives of creative artists. This was also a period in which literary magazines were powerful arbiters of taste, helping to shape the ideological consciousness of their middle-class readers. Romantic Genius and the Literary Magazine considers how these magazines debated the nature of genius and how and why they constructed particular creative artists as geniuses. Romantic writers often imagined genius to be a force that transcended the realms of politics and economics. David Higgins, however, shows in this text that representations of genius played an important role in ideological and commercial conflicts within early nineteenth-century literary culture. Furthermore, Romantic Genius and the Literary Magazine bridges the gap between Romantic and Victorian literary history by considering the ways in which Romanticism was understood and sometimes challenged by writers in the 1830s. It not only discusses a wide range of canonical and non-canonical authors, but also examines the various structures in which these authors had to operate, making it an interesting and important book for anyone working on Romantic literature.

Rocky and Nick experience the same passive-aggressive challenges faced by those with sexual orientations that defy societal norms. Our characters fight for the opportunity to chase their dreams and ambitions as others try to thwart their attempts to be authentic. Fear and hatred are rampant. Their love and undying support for one another steel them against the haters. Outing themselves leads to family, friends, and others ridiculing, attacking, and seeking to diminish them. Courage and commitment fuel their relentless drive to live their lives with dignity. There are horrible consequences and beautiful victories! The story parallels today's political and social unrest. Politically controversial and pragmatic, witness an unlikely duo in their quest for the White House. Watch both Democrats and Republicans facilitated by a complicit media, maneuver to eat their own. The first chapter introduces Marine Corps fighter pilot Lt. Ricardo Chambers 'Rocky' receiving the Medal of Honor in the White House East Room. Most would say this is an achievement, like conquering Mount Everest. 'Rocky' is the man most men would like to be. He is the epitome of what many women would want in a man. But things are not what they appear to be. The First Lady and President callously exploit and discard our hero. Flashback to Rocky's idyllic high school years as his life takes a sudden turn, a forbidden turn. Living an inauthentic and tumultuous life, carefully sampling more of what could unmask and destroy. Heroism and prowess do not clear a path for happy-ever-after. It only muddies the water, providing cover for adversaries lying in wait, ready to spring to the surface and decimate what they covet and hate.

Book Synopsis Twenty-one Mental Models That Can Change Policing by : Renée J. Mitchell
Download or read book Twenty-one Mental Models That Can Change Policing written by Renée J. Mitchell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-16 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book goes beyond other police leadership books to teach practitioners how to think about policing in a structured way that synthesizes criminological theory, statistics, research design, applied research, and what works and what doesn’t in policing into Mental Models. A Mental Model is a representation of how something works. Using a Mental Model framework to simplify complex concepts, readers will take away an in-depth understanding of how cognitive biases affect our ability to understand and interpret data, what empirical research says about effective police interventions, how statistical data should be structured for management meetings, and how to evaluate interventions for efficiency and effectiveness. While evidence-based practice is critical to advancing the police profession, it is limited in scope, and is only part of what is necessary to support sustainable change in policing. Policing requires a scientifically based framework to understand and interpret data in a way that minimizes cognitive bias to allow for better responses to complex problems. Data and research have advanced so rapidly in the last several decades that it is difficult for even the most ambitious of police leaders to keep pace. The Twenty-one Mental Models were synthesized to create a framework for any police, public, or community leader to better understand how cognitive bias contributes to misunderstanding data and gives the reader the tools to overcome those biases to better serve their communities. The book is intended for a wide range of audiences, including law enforcement and community leaders; scholars and policy experts who specialize in policing; students of criminal justice, organizations, and management; reporters and journalists; individuals who aspire to police careers; and citizen consumers of information about policing. Anyone who is going to make decisions about their communities based on data has a responsibility to be numerate and this book Twenty-one Mental Models That Can Change Policing: A Framework For Using Data and Research For Overcoming Cognitive Bias, will help you become just that.
