Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large cohorts of young adults are poised to add to the working-age population of developing economies. Despite much interest in the consequent growth dividend, the size and circumstances of the potential gains remain under-explored. This study makes progress by focusing on India, which will be the largest individual contributor to the global demographic transition ahead. It exploits the variation in the age structure of the population across Indian states to identify the demographic dividend. The main finding is that there is a large and significant growth impact of both the level and growth rate of the working age ratio. This result is robust to a variety of empirical strategies, including a correction for inter-state migration. The results imply that a substantial fraction of the growth acceleration that India has experienced since the 1980s - sometimes ascribed exclusively to economic reforms - is attributable to changes in the country’s age structure. Moreover, the demographic dividend could add about 2 percentage points per annum to India’s per capita GDP growth over the next two decades. With the future expansion of the working age ratio concentrated in some of India’s poorest states, income convergence may well speed up, a theme likely to recur on the global stage.

Book excerpt: India is in the midst of a demographic transition to lower fertility and mortality, which is occurring at the same time that the country's economy is industrializing and international trade flourishing. India's population (931 million in 1995) was growing at more than 2 percent annually for the past three decades, despite declines in fertility. In the early 1990s, India's growth rate finally slipped below 2 as fertility declines caught up with the welcome declines in mortality.

Book excerpt: This book examines the profound demographic transformation affecting China, India, and Indonesia, where 40% of the world's people live. It offers a systematic, comparative approach that will help readers to better understand the changing social and regional recomposition of the population in these regions. The chapters present a detailed investigation and mapping of regional trends in mortality, fertility, migration and urbanization, education, and aging. Throughout, the analysis carefully considers how these trends affect economic and social development. Coverage also raises global, theoretical questions about the singular ways in which each of these three countries have achieved their demographic transition. As the authors reveal, demographic trends seem to be somewhat linear and anticipatable, providing Asia’s three demographic giants and their governments a formidable advantage in planning for the future. But the evolution of human mobility in China, India, and Indonesia, closely intertwined as it is with changing economic conditions, appears less predictable and ranks high among the major challenges to demographic knowledge in the coming decades. Offering an insightful look into the components, implications, and regional variations of a changing population, this book will appeal to social scientists, demographers, anthropologists, sociologists, epidemiologists, and specialists in Asian studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses policies to achieve inclusive growth in India and realise the demographic dividend, which will end by 2040 when India will become an aging society. India is the world's fastest growing large economy, but jobs are not growing equally rapidly. The size of India's youth workforce is worrying, and the largely informal workforce is not covered by social insurance. Universal elementary education, despite the Right to Education Act 2009, is yet to be achieved. Health outcomes have improved only slowly over the years. Furthermore, sanitation still remains a very serious problem. As an economist and former policy-maker, the author discusses specific policies to address these problems, well beyond what is currently being practised. The book also deals with the governance issues that need to be addressed before inclusive growth can be attained.

It examines the demographic transition in the change in the human condition from high mortality and high fertility to low mortality and low fertility. It asks if fluctuating populations is a new phenomenon, or if there has long been an inherent tendency in Man to maximize survival and to control family size.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book draws the big picture of how population change interplays with politics across the world from 1990 to 2040. Leading social scientists from a wide range of disciplines discuss, for the first time, all major political and policy aspects of population change as they play out differently in each major world region: North and South America; Sub-Saharan Africa and the MENA region; Western and East Central Europe; Russia, Belarus and Ukraine; East Asia; Southeast Asia; subcontinental India, Pakistan and Bangladesh; Australia and New Zealand. These macro-regional analyses are completed by cross-cutting global analyses of migration, religion and poverty, and age profiles and intra-state conflicts. From all angles, this book shows how strongly contextualized the political management and the political consequences of population change are. While long-term population ageing and short-term migration fluctuations present structural conditions, political actors play a key role in (mis-)managing, manipulating, and (under-)planning population change, which in turn determines how citizens in different groups react.

Book excerpt: India, with its rich mix of cultures, traditions, and history, is currently the world’s most populous nation and is home to over 1.4 billion people. Such vast demographic might easily be perceived as a daunting challenge, particularly in challenges like resource allocation, job creation, and infrastructural development. Yet, beneath the massive challenge is a treasure trove of opportunities. The gender dividend, achievable through targeted empowerment of women and girls, can contribute to sustainable development. Women, constituting almost half of the nation’s population, possess a myriad of skills, perspectives, and values. Empirical studies have consistently shown that societies which prioritise women’s education and health and promote their economic and political participation tend to be more prosperous and just. The journey to harness this demographic and gender dividend is fraught with complexities. Socio-cultural norms, economic disparities, and the historical context play pivotal roles in shaping the narrative. On 28 August 2023, ORF organised a closed-door roundtable titled Harnessing India’s Demographic and Gender Dividend, in partnership with the Economic Advisory Council to the PM and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), to emphasise the imperative to bridge research and policy gaps. The global implications of India’s choices, especially at this juncture, cannot be overstated; as a nation, the decisions we make now will resonate within our borders and create ripple effects beyond.
