Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deconstructs the whole lineage of political philosophy, showing the ways democracy abuts and regularly undermines the sovereignist tradition across a range of texts from the Iliad to contemporary philosophy. Politics is an object of perennial difficulty for philosophy—as recalcitrant to philosophical mastery as is philosophy’s traditional adversary, poetry. That difficulty makes it an attractive topic for any deconstructive approach to the tradition from which we inherit our language and our concepts. Scatter 2 pursues that deconstruction, often starting with, and sometimes departing from, the work of Jacques Derrida by attending to the concepts of sovereignty on the one hand and democracy on the other. The book begins by following the fate of a line from Homer’s Iliad, where Odysseus asserts that “the rule of many is no good thing, let there be one ruler, one king.” The line, Bennington shows, is quoted, misquoted, and progressively Christianized by Aristotle, Philo Judaeus, Suetonius, the early Church Fathers, Aquinas, Dante, Ockham, Marsilius of Padua, Jean Bodin, Etienne de la Boétie, up to Carl Schmitt and Erik Peterson, and even one of the defendants at the Nuremberg trials, before being discussed by Derrida himself. In the book’s second half, Bennington begins again with Plato and Aristotle and tracks the concept of democracy as it regularly abuts and undermines that sovereignist tradition. In detailed readings of Hobbes and Rousseau, Bennington develops a notion of “proto-democracy” as a possible name for the scatter that underlies and drives the political as such and that will always prevent politics from achieving its aim of bringing itself to an end.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepare yourself for a rough ride into the end of this century. It will be dramatic, bloody, and mind-boggling. The world crisis and conflicts will deepen due to the pressure of growing populations, the scarcity of resources, pollution, and climate change. This chaos will result in some losers among them democracy, liberal humanism, and human rights. They will get their wings cut off and wont play a major role in the future to come. The winners will probably go for a new global faith and democrature, sustainable policies, upgraded humans, and trimmed-up civilization. This transformation is inevitable if we wish to grant our progenies a fair chance to prevail and evolve further beyond our semiprimitive stage. Almost all human beings consider Homo sapiens to be indispensable, but this is a plain delusion. Since there is only one thing that is certain, everything is temporary, these views show the built-in limitations of human reasoning and long-term thinking. The future of intelligent life lies beyond us!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of new lexical units and patterns has been studied in different research frameworks, focusing on either system-internal or system-external aspects, from which no comprehensive view has emerged. The volume aims to fill this gap by studying dynamic processes in the lexicon – understood in a wide sense as not being necessarily limited to the word level – by bringing together approaches directed to morphological productivity as well as approaches analyzing general types of lexical innovation and the role of discourse-related factors. The papers deal with ongoing changes as well as with historical processes of change in different languages and reflect on patterns and specific subtypes of lexical innovation as well as on their external conditions and the speakers’ motivations for innovating. Moreover, the diffusion and conventionalization of innovations will be addressed. In this way, the volume contributes to understanding the complex interplay of structural, cognitive and functional factors in the lexicon as a highly dynamic domain.

Book excerpt: Elections have always been an integral part of post-independence African politics and have assumed utmost importance in the course of recent democratisation processes. However, comparative research on the political development in Africa lacks reliable electoral data. Elections in Africa fills this cap. The handbook is the only reliable source for African elections from independence to present. In the first volume of this series, Elections in Africa presents a country-by-country study of African nations that provides a comparative introduction on elections and electoral systems. Each country chapter examines the history of the institutional and electoral arrangements, the evolution of suffrage and current electoral provisions. Precise and exhaustive data on national elections and referendums are presented comparatively. The book provides a definitive and comprehensive set ofdata on elections and electoral systems in order to facilitate comparative research. Data is presented in a systematic manner allowing for both historical and cross-national comparisons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of mankind can partly be understood as the history of our blindness of our mental limitations! The three fundamental truths that we must face in order to survive/prevail on a long-term basis are as follows: 1. Everything is temporary, including Homo sapiens, his achievements, and his constructs. 2. We aregenerally speakingunwise regarding our conduct of the planets sustainable state. We act, in fact, as its vermin, not as its guardians. 3. Only by transcending ourselves will we pass on our valuable and noble essence to our future upgraded children. Sabotaging this transformation will imply our species decay and oblivion. Realizing these truths, what did the author of this book do? He followed Rumis words: Start a huge, foolish project, like Noah . . . It makes absolutely no difference what people think of you. And that was exactly what he didhe built up a new Noahs ark.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalisation turns out to be untenable because it does not guarantee minimum social equity, peace and respect for the environment, and therefore does not guarantee the effective accomplishment of human rights. This book analyzes this issue and raises proposals for a new perspective. The first part describes the soft threats to human rights, derived from the devaluation of the politics and the productive economy with regard to the finance. It entails the concealment of the reality in the shape of exploitation as the tax havens and in the shape of marginalization of the persons with different abilities. The second part include a study of hard threats to human rights and examines two cases of failed states: Afghanistan and Somalia, in which the violence has supplanted the politics and the economy. In view of these situations it is necessary to rethink the force of classic ius gentium and the humanitarian right. The third part presents the European Union as a legal and political space in which conditions of a worthy life are better defended by means of the Primacy of Practical Reason and Social State of Law, and by the requirement of peace as the main rule of international relations.

Book excerpt: God whispered into my ear, “Admittedly, I am a failed engineer for manufacturing such sapiens. Oh dear!” Ordinary sapiens have a fixed mental matrix: he has his faith or convictions beyond which there are no other horizons. The definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” This is what we are doing to our global climate and sustainability. We need an advanced mind beyond sapiens to save us from ourselves—a mind that has no masters, like God or holy cows. In this context, we ask, “Who am I, the writer? Am I only sapiens?” I am definitely more than that. I have mentally mutated beyond sapiens into being an evolving future transcendent! Achieving such an advanced mind is the kernel of this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upturning the typical view of Turkey’s democratic trajectory as a product of authoritarian assault or unfortunate circumstances, this book argues that the AKP, first elected in 2002, has consistently advanced a narrative of democracy as the work of an elite working for the 'National Will'. Beginning with an analysis of the historical processes that led to the AKP’s rise at the beginning of the 21st century, the book then focuses on the AKP since 2002. Though Turkey’s democratic transition was originally characterised by Western co-operation, the author outlines the gradual deterioration of these relations since the 2010s, as well as the decline of political rights, freedom of expression and the rule of law. However, bringing in theoretical perspectives of democracy, it is argued that the AKP has adopted an alternative definition based on the 'National Will' throughout its rule, resistant to the Western essentialist view. As such, the AKP’s story highlights that the root of this crisis lies within democracy itself. The book will appeal to historians and analysts of Turkish politics, as well as to political scientists interested in theories of democracy. Moreover, for those interested in the global contemporary crisis of democracy, the book provides an important case-study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines radical Jihad terrorism in contemporary France and sheds light on the vicious circle of violence, based on reciprocity. Building upon the theoretical heritage of Pierre Bourdieu, the book develops a methodology and a concept of the vicious circle of violence in France, based on three pillars: actors, dynamics, and effects. Discussing the development of global terrorism between the 9/11 attacks and the launch of the European front against global terror in Spain and Great Britain, the book goes on to analyze why France has not been attacked during the 2000s and why it, in turn, became a primary target of terrorist attacks during the 2010s, with a special emphasis on communication theory and the concept of reciprocity. Studying these attacks on the international level, the book offers insights into violent acts of revenge of the radical home-grown jihadists for the French military interventions in four Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) countries, especially Libya and Syria. It further investigates the following growing radicalization of the Muslim community on the national level as a reason for terrorist attacks. Finally, the book sheds light on the reactions from within the French military to these developments, before closing with a presentation of the new political context after the 2022 presidential and legislative elections. Based on empirical evidence and a theoretical background this book will appeal to students and scholars of political science and international relations, as well as policy-makers and practitioners interested in a better understanding of terrorism, French politics, and communication theory.

Book excerpt: This book explains why some missionaries are being led to reject the missional models and many of the methodologies which are the most widely accepted by North American evangelical missionaries working in France. The author demonstrates that the evangelical Protestant missionaries' witness for Christ in Western Europe is often ineffective because their governing missional paradigm and their ministry methods, working in conjunction, tend to project a separatist image and isolate them from those they wish to influence for Christ. The author argues for the development of a missionary spirituality based upon the kenosis and an understanding of Christian unity based upon the perichoresis.
