Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This inaugural Democracy Index for Botswana is intended to set a benchmark for democracy to be measured against. The tool, developed and honed by Idasa over many years, assesses the depth of democracy in a country through five focus areas: participation, elections, accountability, political rights, and human dignity. The research relies on expert analysis to answer a set of questions that interrogate how closely, in practice, democracy meets the broad ideal of self-representative government. More specifically, to what extent can citizens control elected officials and government appointees who make decisions about public affairs? And how equal are citizens to one another in this accountability process? The purpose of the scores is to assist citizens in making their own judgements, based on the information made available, to stimulate national debate and to provide democracy promoters with a tool for identifying issues and needs that can be addressed by education, advocacy, training, institution building and policy revision. Idasas Democracy Index initially developed for South Africa is being expanded into Southern Africa in an effort to broaden the capacity of individuals and organisations monitoring and supporting democratic governance efforts in the region.

Book Synopsis Democracy in Botswana by : John D. Holm
Download or read book Democracy in Botswana written by John D. Holm and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the character of Botswana's democracy and provides an intense debate on the quality of popular control achieved. Topics covered include Botswana's historical experience with democracy, public opinion, political rights, the impact of classes, groups and mass media on government policy, and grass-roots politics. The authors range from important politicians to outside observers. Their differing points of view crystallize into a series of debates on the role of elected politicians, civil servants, chiefs, capitalists, foreign aid officials and group rights in the political system. Internationally recognized scholars expand the discussion by reflecting on how Botswana both mirrors and differs from other African countries. The Democracy Project, consisting of faculty members from the University of Botswana, provided the stimulus for this book. In the year preceding the symposium, Project members collected data on various aspects of Botswana's democracy. Ten of their papers are included in this volume.

Clark Leith traces the evolution of Botswana's economic policies and democratic political systems And The forces that have shaped them since the country achieved independence in 1966. Leith shows that other African nations endowed with resources failed to stimulate growth but Botswana prospered because of a democratic political system and economic interests that were anchored in tradition, tempered by leadership, and shaped by growing institutions.
Book Synopsis Cultural Capital and Prospects for Democracy in Botswana and Ethiopia by : Asafa Jalata
Download or read book Cultural Capital and Prospects for Democracy in Botswana and Ethiopia written by Asafa Jalata and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-16 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on and examines the impact of cultural capital, political economy, social movements, and political consciousness on the potential development of substantive democracy in Botswana and Ethiopia. While explaining the challenges, obstacles, and opportunities for the development of democracy, Cultural Capital and Prospects for Democracy in Botswana and Ethiopia engages in defining democracy as a contested, open, and expanding concept through a comparative and historical examination. The book’s analysis employs interdisciplinary, multidimensional, comparative methods and critical approaches to examine the dynamic interplay among social structures, human agencies, cultural factors, and social movements. This comparative and historical study has required an examination of critical social history that looks at societal issues from the bottom up: specifically critical discourse and the particular world system approach, which deal with long-term and large-scale social changes. Cultural Capital and Prospects for Democracy in Botswana and Ethiopia will be of interest to scholars and students of African politics, political theory, and democratization.

Download or read book Democracy in Africa written by Nic Cheeseman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-12 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first comprehensive overview of the history of democracy in Africa and explains why the continent's democratic experiments have so often failed, as well as how they could succeed. Nic Cheeseman grapples with some of the most important questions facing Africa and democracy today, including whether international actors should try and promote democracy abroad, how to design political systems that manage ethnic diversity, and why democratic governments often make bad policy decisions. Beginning in the colonial period with the introduction of multi-party elections and ending in 2013 with the collapse of democracy in Mali and South Sudan, the book describes the rise of authoritarian states in the 1970s; the attempts of trade unions and some religious groups to check the abuse of power in the 1980s; the remarkable return of multiparty politics in the 1990s; and finally, the tragic tendency for elections to exacerbate corruption and violence.
