Book Synopsis Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration in Southern Africa by : Gwinyayi Albert Dzinesa
Download or read book Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration in Southern Africa written by Gwinyayi Albert Dzinesa and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-24 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a critical comparative reflection of the post-colonial conflict Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) of ex-combatants in Zimbabwe, Namibia and South Africa. It offers an up-to-date comparative analysis of how specific analytical elements that transcend state boundaries shaped DDR in the three southern African countries. The author explores structural and organizational frameworks, target groups, state leadership in DDR, linkages between DDR and SSR in nation and state building, and types of post-conflict violence. The volume draws on fieldwork including interviews with policy makers and government officials as well as ex-combatants and experts to provide valuable insights into how post-colonial conflict DDR can provide knowledge crucial to understanding and addressing the problems of post-conflict peace building in Africa. The book is aimed at academics, researchers and students working on Southern Africa; African and Western policymakers concerned with problematic post-conflict situations on the continent, where improvising DDR processes will be vital to success; as well as the general reader interested in political, security and other developments in the region. It will be of use in postgraduate courses in the inter-related fields of international relations, comparative government, conflict resolution and peacebuilding.
Book Synopsis South Africa's Struggle to Remember by : Kim Wale
Download or read book South Africa's Struggle to Remember written by Kim Wale and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transitional justice studies typically focuses on how nations remember, face and deal with histories of past violence. This book, however, shifts the frame from national discourses of transitional justice onto local memory actors who attempt to engage with these broader systems of meaning from below. The case study is based on the memory struggles of individuals and groups who are attempting to gain access to the discourses and benefits associated with dominant memory identities of ‘victim’ and ‘veteran’ in the context of post-transition South Africa. They share a common history of squatter resistance in the Western Cape in the 1980s and a common struggle for inclusion in dominant memory frameworks. The main theme of this book is the politics of memory, as it relates to the conversation between national and local memory. Integrated within this theme is the further theme of alternative histories and counter-memories of struggle from below. In focusing on counter memories of violence and transition this book aims to tell a different version of South African liberation history in relation to the dominant narrative. It analyses local memory actors' attempts to bring their lived histories into conversation with national discourses of reconciliation and the national liberation struggle. In doing so it unpacks a memory paradox occurring within these narratives, which highlights the politics of inclusion and exclusion within the frames of transitional justice knowledge. On the one hand this alternate story exposes the paradox between local and national memory while on the other hand it brings into focus the local experience of the intersection between international transitional justice discourses and national transition politics. This book will be of local and international interest to scholars and students in the field of transitional justice, memory politics, national liberation struggle and South African historiography. It will also be of interest to a broader South Africa public, as it offers a deeper understanding of South Africa’s history, which challenges taken for granted transitional justice frames of knowledge.
Book Synopsis Guerrillas and Combative Mothers by : Siphokazi Magadla
Download or read book Guerrillas and Combative Mothers written by Siphokazi Magadla and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guerrillas and Combative Mothers is a narrative of women participating in the armed struggle against apartheid from 1961 to 1994 and their lives in a democratic South Africa. Focusing on their agency, commitment, beliefs and actions, it describes how women got politicised and the decisions and circumstances that led them to join the armed struggle in South Africa and exile. Siphokazi Magadla discusses the forms of military training they received, the combat activities and their transformation as women and soldiers. Magadla also talks about their participation in the South African National Defence Force-led demobilisation process and their contributions to the democratic revolution of the SANDF. By illuminating the different eras and arenas of their participation, this book shows the broadness of the armed struggle against apartheid as a historical truth and as a matter of gender equality and justice for an inclusive and more democratic future.

Book Synopsis Gender, Peace and Security in Africa by : Cheryl Hendricks
Download or read book Gender, Peace and Security in Africa written by Cheryl Hendricks and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is often a moment in time that acts as a rallying point around a particular issue. 2015 was one of those moments for women, peace and security as numerous landmark anniversaries were celebrated in the field. Africa has, in many ways, been the global laboratory for the gender, peace and security agenda, not only because of the number of conflicts occurring on the continent but also because African regional organisations, governments and civil society organisations have been at the forefront of striving for gender equality and implementing United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325. This book explores gender, peace and security in Africa from multiple angles, including: the conceptual and implementation challenges and shifts around women, peace and security in Africa over the last 15 years; women’s role as combatants in national liberation forces in South Africa; the dynamics of gender in the military through the lens of Kenyan women combatants; food security through a feminist lens; and a series of case studies on the nexus between gender and security in Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Madagascar, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and Somalia. This book was previously published as a special issue of the African Security Review.
Book Synopsis Political Expression and Conflict Transformation in Divided Societies by : Daniel Kirkpatrick
Download or read book Political Expression and Conflict Transformation in Divided Societies written by Daniel Kirkpatrick and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-04 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers how the social construction of crime and the criminalising of political expression impact upon different stages in a violent political conflict. The freedom to express our political opinions is regarded as an essential human right throughout most of the world, and yet, in defence of our security, governments often place various restrictions on it. This book directly considers what these restrictions are in the context of deeply divided societies to understand how they impact upon intergroup relations in four different contexts: nonviolent movements, counter-insurgency, peace negotiations, and post-settlement peacebuilding. Drawing on an extensive body of original interviews and archival material, the volume analyses this relationship through an in-depth consideration of Northern Ireland and South Africa, followed by a wider analysis of Turkey, Sri Lanka, Belgium, and Canada. The overarching argument is that the implications of criminalising political expression depend on both its ‘target’ and the wider social reality it contributes towards. This book will be of much interest to students of conflict resolution, transitional justice, law, and International Relations.

Book Synopsis From Early Warning to Early Action? by : European Commission. DG External Relations
Download or read book From Early Warning to Early Action? written by European Commission. DG External Relations and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's world is characterised by more conflict than ever before; last year 118 violent conflicts wreaked destruction around the globe. This book, mainly designed for NGOs, politicians, social workers, citizens and students, leads the discussion on how the European Union can use its resources to respond more effectively to the contemporary challenges in civilian crisis response. Divided into six sections, the book is a collection of texts written by experts from European Union institutions, European think-tanks and universities, as well as high-ranking officials from the European Union military staff and experts from non-governmental organisations. The texts are accompanied by beautiful pictures by professional photojournalists. Over the last two years the European Union has taken a range of steps to enhance the way it deals with international crises and natural disasters. EU financial resources for crisis response have increased more than four-fold since 2006. These resources are being used in closer cooperation and partnership with European Union Member States, NGOs and the think tank community in Europe and beyond. New ways of acting faster on the basis of early warning have been drawn up. This new book is a collection of writing illustrating the progress made in these areas against the background of discussion and input from policy experts and practitioners in the field. It builds on the range of views aired at the Commission's conference 'From Early Warning to Early action', held in November 2007, involving more than 900 diplomats, officers, practitioners, scholars and advocates, representing all facets of the network of European crisis responders. The book - one of the few comprehensive examinations of crisis response and preparedness in action - is divided into four main parts: partnership-building, mediation and peace-keeping, natural resource wars, and trans-regional threats, early-warning and intelligence. It is a follow-up to "Faster and more united?", an overview of discussion on the EU's crisis response capacity published in 2006.
