Book excerpt: The following is a study to determine if sufficient demand exists to start a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree program in dental hygiene through a joint agreement for completion degrees between Valencia Community College and the University of Central Florida. To accomplish this objective two survey instruments were administered to randomly selected licensed dentists and dental hygienists in the state of Florida. Dental hygienists represented the potential student base for the proposed programs, and dentists represented the potential and prospective employers of graduated students of the proposed programs. To determine demand and demand characteristics, one survey instrument was mailed to 1,000 dental hygienists who were randomly selected using SAS software from a population of N=12,066 dental hygienists actively licensed to practice in the state of Florida. This sample of hygienists was approximately 8.3% of the total population. Of the 1,000 samples, 134 (or 13.4%) were returned. Of the 134 surveys returned, 123 (n=123) were included in this study. Eleven surveys were not included because of a majority of missing data or because the respondent indicated he or she already possessed a Bachelor or Master degree. A Likert-scale questionnaire was sent to each group of actively licensed dentists and actively licensed dental hygienists from the state of Florida. Responses from dental hygienists were overwhelmingly positive towards the addition of the Bachelor of Science degree program with an online distance-learning component. Those in favor of the Bachelor of Science degree program also provided a favorable response towards adding a Master of Science degree program in dental hygiene. The dentists, as potential future employers, also showed strong support in their responses for the additional degree programs with an additional management track component and believed it would elevate the professional standards of the dental hygiene field.

Book excerpt: Current regulations require a minimum of an Associates Degree from an accredited college or university for entry into the profession of dental hygiene. There are currently 288 programs that offer an Associates Degree, and 56 programs that offer a Bachelor’s Degree. Although dental hygiene began like many other healthcare professions, it has failed to implement higher education requirements like these similar fields. The purpose of this study was to evaluate opinions of currently licensed dental hygienists regarding entry level education requirements. Participants answered electronic survey questions via Qualtrics concerning their current degree levels and active practices, in addition to how they thought requiring a Bachelor’s Degree would impact the profession. Most participants agreed that a baccalaureate degree would have a positive impact on the profession, and should be the requirement for entry level education. This supports results from similar research and the views of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association toward advancing the profession.

Book excerpt: Offering the most realistic NBDHE review and practice available, Mosby's Review Questions for the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination includes both a print book and companion website to prepare you for exam success. In the book, you’ll review with more than 1,250 Component A practice questions — with each answer including a rationale for both correct and incorrect answer options. Online, you can review the same questions plus an additional 420 case-based items related to Component B in 1) practice mode or 2) timed, exam-simulation mode with randomized tests that match the number and distribution of questions on the NBDHE. From a team of dental hygiene experts including lead editor Barbara Bennett, this Q&A resource is an excellent supplement to any NBDHE content review book! More than 1,680 multiple-choice questions provide comprehensive practice spanning the entire NBDHE, with 1,250+ items relating to Component A — more than six times the number of questions on the actual exam! — and 420 case-based questions related to Component B. Rationales accompany each question, fully explaining why each answer choice is either correct or incorrect and thus serving as secondary content review. Distribution of questions matches each category on the NBDHE test specifications, ensuring that you have adequate practice for each content area. An Evolve companion website includes all 1,250+ questions from the book plus additional case studies with color images and accompanying questions, available either in practice mode with instant feedback or in exam-simulation format with results and feedback provided at the end of the exam. A test creator and timer on Evolve generates NBDHE-style tests that mimic the number and distribution of questions on the NBDHE and also provides realistic practice with time management during the exam. 16 detailed case studies on Evolve, each of which includes a patient medical/dental history, completed periodontal chart, oral radiographs, clinical photographs, and 20-35 multiple-choice questions for patients in the five main categories covered on the NBDHE (adult periodontitis, pediatric, geriatric, special needs, and medically compromised). References to text sources make it easy to review or find more information on specific topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increases in requirements for dental hygiene education, access to care, and expanded practice options have led to investigation into the need of higher education levels for hygienists. There are currently no bachelor's degree options for dental hygiene students in Wisconsin. The purpose of this descriptive study was to analyze student perceptions of dental hygiene education levels in western Wisconsin. This study surveyed first and second year dental hygiene students at Chippewa Valley Technical College. The survey investigated student perceptions about career opportunities for associate versus bachelor’s degrees in dental hygiene, concerns about a future bachelor’s degree requirement, and facilitating factors and barriers to completing a bachelor’s degree. Though the results were inconclusive as to the need of a bachelor's degree program in Wisconsin, the study did find that as students progressed through their education they became more interested in the possibility of obtaining a bachelor's degree. Concern over a bachelor's degree requirement decreased as students matured. The most common barriers to completing a bachelor's degree were cost and time. Students felt that the possibility of earning higher pay and having alternative job options outside of clinical practice could facilitate their completing a bachelor's degree in dental hygiene in the future.
