Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Electrical Fields of Consciousness: Brain Waves and Dreaming examines neuro-electrophysiology from its origins in the electrical fields of primitive organisms to its roles in the electrophysiologically defined states of human consciousness. This volume presents and cogently organizes the wide spectrum of information available as to how and why bioelectrical fields are used to define and function in supporting both life and consciousness. Integrating electrophysiology in a comprehensible manner into neuroanatomical, electromagnetic, and global platform theories of neuroconsciousness, this book brings together the wide spectrum of available data-based evidence regarding the physiology and functions of bioelectric fields and their relationship to consciousness. Chapters examine the origin and potential function of bioelectrical fields and EEG associations with conscious states, as well as the relationship between electrical fields and consciousness. Incorporating the basic science, clinical correlates, and functional potential of CNS bioelectrical fields, this book is a must-read for all working in the field of CNS electrophysiology or neuroconsciousness. Addresses our current understandings of the origin and potential functions of bioelectricity Integrates electrophysiology into current theories of neuroconsciousness, presenting within an historic research and clinical context Explores the origin, nature, bioenergetics, and potential genetic effects of synchronous physiologic electrical fields and their use as markers for life and death Addresses the definition and assessment of consciousness in human and non-human systems and reviews electrophysiological markers of wake and sleep consciousness states Discusses electrophysiologic drug and disease correlates as well as modern forms of electrical therapy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What, if anything, do dreams tell us about ourselves? What is the relationship between types of sleep and types of dreams? Does dreaming serve any purpose? Or are dreams simply meaningless mental noise--"unmusical fingers wandering over the piano keys"? With expertise in philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience, Owen Flanagan is uniquely qualified to answer these questions. And in Dreaming Souls he provides both an accessible survey of the latest research on sleep and dreams and a compelling new theory about the nature and function of dreaming. Flanagan argues that while sleep has a clear biological function and adaptive value, dreams are merely side effects, "free riders," irrelevant from an evolutionary point of view. But dreams are hardly unimportant. Indeed, Flanagan argues that dreams are self-expressive, the result of our need to find or to create meaning, even when we're sleeping. Rejecting Freud's theory of manifest and latent content--of repressed wishes appearing in disguised form--Flanagan shows how brainstem activity during sleep generates a jumbled profusion of memories, images, thoughts, emotions, and desires, which the cerebral cortex then attempts to shape into a more or less coherent story. Such dream-narratives range from the relatively mundane worries of non REM sleep to the fantastic confabulations of deep REM that resemble psychotic episodes in their strangeness. But however bizarre these narratives may be, they can shed light on our mental life, our well being, and our sense of self. Written with clarity, lively wit, and remarkable insight, Dreaming Souls offers a fascinating new way of apprehending one of the oldest mysteries of mental life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every mental activity is dominated by the law of "bipolarity": to every instinct there corresponds a counter-instinct; to every virtue, a vice; to every manifestation of strength, some weakness. One can never understand the nature of man so long as one fails to take into consideration this fact. My work treats of the secrets of the human soul. It would be unfair to appraise humanity on the basis of the results of these investigations. For this work deals specifically with the evil in human nature, and only with the evil. But we must not forget that there is also another side. Perhaps I can make myself clear best through an example: A stranger comes into some town unfamiliar to him; he looks over very thoroughly and with great enthusiasm its monuments of art; he is charmed by the beautiful sights which culture has provided. He then departs believing he has become thoroughly acquainted with the town. Another traveller says to himself, - after having gone through the program suggested by the usual traveller's guide: Now I want to look into the reverse side of the life of this place! He knows that the pompous formal life has its seamy side, and he discovers once more that only he is able truly to appraise the light side of the picture who has familiarized himself also with its shadows

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A few years ago, after the great flood of 2011, I went on a four day tour of the Mississippi Delta accompanied by a good friend whom I will refer to as P.A. We left Memphis early one morning and headed down Highway 61 on our way to Greenville. As we traveled down 61, I recalled many years ago passing through this area and it had not changed. P.A. was my guide pointing out that Mississippi is a special place and much maligned by others. The hot sun, unpainted buildings, scattered shacks, small towns half empty, miles of cultivated fields, blues echoing in small towns, friendliest people on the planet, the arts, Oxford and Ole Miss, Blues venues like the Shack-Up Inn, and Ground Zero, and the unspoken sadness from a brutal past, all contributed to the poems in this brief collection. Some are from personal experience, or a response to life in the Delta, others from what I learned from P.A. It is my hope as you read each poem you will see the Delta with all its beauty, all its faults, and I hope someday experience its culture first hand before time brings change and the Delta fades into memory.
