Singled out for special attention are low socio-economic status (SES) schools which are frequently characterised by teachers and students with little investment in learning and teaching. Yet within this plethora of educational discussion there is no contemporary, longitudinal study of what it means to learn and teach in a disadvantaged school within the policy context of the ‘education revolution’ in Australia. Drawing on 500 interviews conducted over a four period with the Principal, parents, teachers and students at a regional low SES school, this book challenges the profile of one school as represented on the ‘My School’ website which publishes the results of National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). Chapters situate the original research within an international and national educational context, before exploring topics including leadership and management, student behaviour, constructs of the ‘good teacher’, the involvement of parents in school and the ‘digital revolution’. The book closes with an appraisal of the major themes that emerged from the multiple perspectives of the study. This is the first book to provide a longitudinal ethnographic study of a school in Australia, which examines the impact of the ‘education revolution’ on the Principal, parents, teachers and students. It comprehensively challenges the official ‘My School’ representation of a low SES school and will appeal to researchers in education, as well as those involved in postgraduate teacher education and sociology courses, both from Australia and internationally.

In the digital age, information is power. Increasingly, education systems are moving away from using education data narrowly for compliance purposes; instead, they are embracing data as a tool to drive systemwide innovation, professionalization, and, most importantly, learning. Whether to prioritize and optimize data and information systems around student learning is no longer an option; it is imperative for education systems that aim to excel and achieve strong learning outcomes. The state then launched a longitudinal data system center that would drive an adaptive education system with insights that track students from pre-kindergarten to entry in the workforce. Data across the state are high quality and follow strict rules to preserve privacy and enhance security. Maryland’s utilization of data also offers valuable lessons. The statewide data system supports policy makers and decision makers in planning and management, as well as teachers, students, and families in instruction and learning. Consistent across Maryland’s structuring and use of data systems were a strong vision and a road map to execute that vision. Maryland’s journey offers many lessons, not only for countries with advanced data systems but also for those in less developed stages. While the technology and information exist to achieve data for learning, harnessing data within the right information system and ensuring utilization are challenging endeavors. An array of factors must align—leadership, policies, processes, and resources, to name a few—to effectively harness data to support and drive strong learning outcomes.

Book excerpt: This case study focuses on the My School website, managed by the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), and is the platform for the countryâs âschool report cardsâ. The approach taken was to generate new knowledge regarding My School and to utilize existing data based on two recent relevant reports on My School, namely the Review of My School website: Final report to the Australian government Department of Education and the market research report, Perspectives on the My School website. New data were acquired from three main groups of actors: a sample of school actors (principals or, in some cases, assistants, deputy principals, or other school leaders), parent and community actors (representatives from peak parent organizations and community stakeholder organizations), and policy actors who work at a jurisdictional level in the analysis and reporting of school performance data. The mixed-method research methodology applied to this study involved an examination of key source documents (including the two recent reports on My School), the analysis of data obtained from the semi-structured interviews with the policy, parent, and community actors, and data obtained from the written survey of school actors. Analysis of the source material and survey data were coded and categorized to identify patterns, similarities, and differences through a process of comparative analysis. Nine key themes were developed from this process: Usage; Purpose; Usefulness; Limitations; Enhancements (proposed by ACARA); Enhancements (proposed by actors); Transparency; Accountability; Risks.
