Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents in detail the application of an energy method to describe a class of delamination crack growth problems found in polymer-based composite laminates. The energy method is derived from the general concepts of classical fracture mechanics. When used judiciously and with proper interpretation of the physical factors pertinent to the crack growth process at the lamina(ply) level, the method describes well delamination growth behavior in laminates that are subjected to monotonically (static) or cyclically(fatigue) applied loads or to both. Both could be in tension or in compression.

This book was released on 1985 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The elastoplastic nature of delamination crack growth in composite laminates is discussed. A simple estimation of the local elastic strain energy release rate in the presence of plasticity (IL) is made, and used as a criterion for stable delamination crack growth in notched composite laminates. A three-dimensional elastoplastic, generally orthotropic finite-element method is used for the analysis. The finite-element techniques developed for estimating IL (in Mode I, Mode II, Mode III, and mixed-mode fracture) and for crack growth simulation are described. The analysis has been used to predict the initiation and growth of delamination near through-the-thickness cracks in central and single-edge notched [±45/0]s graphite/epoxy laminates subjected to static in-plane tensile stresses normal to the notches. Delamination between +45/-45 and -45/0 interfaces and material yielding at different stages of loading are presented. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed elastoplastic fracture criterion is very effective in predicting stable delamination crack growth in composite laminates having nonlinear matrix-dominated properties.
Book Synopsis Fracture Mechanics of Matrix Cracking and Delamination in Glass/epoxy Laminates by : M. Caslini
Download or read book Fracture Mechanics of Matrix Cracking and Delamination in Glass/epoxy Laminates written by M. Caslini and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focused on characterizing matrix cracking and delamination behavior in multidirectional laminates. Static tension and tension-tension fatigue tests were conducted on two different layups. Damage onset, accumulation, and residual properties were measured. Matrix cracking was shown to have a considerable influence on residual stiffness of glass epoxy laminates, and could be predicted reasonably well for cracks in 90 deg plies using a simple shear lag analysis. A fracture mechanics analysis for the strain energy release rate associated with 90 deg ply matrix crack formation was developed and was shown to correlate the onset of 90 deg ply cracks in different laminates. The linear degradation of laminate modulus with delamination area, previously observed for graphite epoxy laminates, was predicted for glass epoxy laminates using a simple rule of mixtures analysis. The strain energy release rate associated with edge delamination formation under static and cyclic loading was difficult to analyze because of the presence of several contemporary damage phenomena. Keywords: Fatigue(Mechanics), and Stiffness loss.

Book Synopsis Numerical Simulation of Delamination Growth in Composite Materials by : P. P. Camanho
Download or read book Numerical Simulation of Delamination Growth in Composite Materials written by P. P. Camanho and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of decohesion elements for the simulation of delamination in composite materials is reviewed. The test methods available to measure the interfacial fracture toughness used in the formulation of decohesion elements are described initially. After a brief presentation of the virtual crack technique most widely used to simulate delamination growth, the formulation of interfacial decohesion elements is described. Problems related with decohesion element constitutive equations, mixed-mode crack growth, element numerical integration and solution procedures are discussed. Based on these investigations, it is concluded that the use of interfacial decohesion elements is a promising technique that avoids the need for a pre-existing crack and pre-interfacial decohesion elements is a promising technique that avoids the need for a pre-existing crack and predefined crack paths, and that these elements can be used to simulate both delamination onset and growth.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researches the development of a technique for delamination-free drilling of fiber-reinforced composite laminates by use of an empirical delamination growth rate model that was developed as a function of the drilling delamination index, the ply thickness, the number of plys, the feed, the tool diameter, and the lip angle. The model utilizes the critical ply number to estimate the delamination crack growth rate at subsequent ply numbers. A drilling envelope has been developed to establish a zone for the process parameters within which delamination-free operations may be performed.

Book Synopsis The Virtual Crack Closure Technique: History, Approach and Applications by : Ronald Krueger
Download or read book The Virtual Crack Closure Technique: History, Approach and Applications written by Ronald Krueger and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An overview of the virtual crack closure technique is presented. The approach used is discussed, the history summarized, and insight into its applications provided. Equations for two-dimensional quadrilateral elements with linear and quadratic shape functions are given. Formula for applying the technique in conjuction with three-dimensional solid elements as well as plate/shell elements are also provided. Necessary modifications for the use of the method with geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis and corrections required for elements at the crack tip with different lengths and widths are discussed. The problems associated with cracks or delaminations propagating between different materials are mentioned briefly, as well as a strategy to minimize these problems. Due to an increased interest in using a fracture mechanics based approach to assess the damage tolerance of composite structures in the design phase and during certification, the engineering problems selected as examples and given as references focus on the application of the technique to components made of composite materials.

Download or read book Delamination Buckling of Composite Materials written by L. Kachanov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LIOn Delamination of Laminated Composites (a) Fiber-Reinforced Composites Considerable technological advances in the production of high-strength fibers (graphite, boron, etc.) have led to a wide use of light high-strength composite materials (graphite epoxy, boron-epoxy, etc.). It is expedient, to make thin walled composite rods, plates, and shells from such materials. Plates can be made by bonding a set of unidirectional thin fiber layers, Fig.l.l. Such plates are orthotropic, as a rule. A random short-fiber composite is shown in Fig. 1.2. Fiber-reinforced composites are widely used in thin-walled aircraft structures because of their specific high strength. For example, the graphite-epoxy composite is characterized by a unidirectional tensile strength of 1.4 GPa while the density is 1.6 Mg/rrt? . For comparison, we may take a steel (steel 4340) whose corresponding properties are identified by values like 1.2 GPa and 7.8 Mg/rrt? . 1. INTRODUCTION Figure 1.1 2 1.1. On Delamination of Laminated Composites Figure 1.2 3 1. INTRODUCTION It is characteristic for laminated plastic material to possess a fairly low bonding. Therefore, low-velocity impacts and defects in manufacturing lead to local delamination. (b) Linear Problems of Delamination Buckling Delamination can significantly reduce the compressive strength and stiffness of the laminate. Local delamination can be considered as a crack in the bond. Under buckling there appears a high interlaminate stress at the crack edge that leads to a spreading of the crack. Delamination growth can lead to structural instability.

Book Synopsis Damage Growth in Aerospace Composites by : Aniello Riccio
Download or read book Damage Growth in Aerospace Composites written by Aniello Riccio and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-07 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents novel methods for the simulation of damage evolution in aerospace composites that will assist in predicting damage onset and growth and thus foster less conservative designs which realize the promised economic benefits of composite materials. The presented integrated numerical/experimental methodologies are capable of taking into account the presence of damage and its evolution in composite structures from the early phases of the design (conceptual design) through to the detailed finite element method analysis and verification phase. The book is based on the GARTEUR Research Project AG-32, which ran from 2007 to 2012, and documents the main results of that project. In addition, the state of the art in European projects on damage evolution in composites is reviewed. While the high specific strength and stiffness of composite materials make them suitable for aerospace structures, their sensitivity to damage means that designing with composites is a challenging task. The new approaches described here will prove invaluable in meeting that challenge.
