Book excerpt: A study of the delamination behavior of three classes of composite material is described: glass/epoxy, graphite/epoxy, and graphite/PEEK (polyetheretherketone). Mode I loading was applied to double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens of two thicknesses, while three different types of mode II specimen were tested: end-notched flexure (ENF), end-notched cantilever beam (ENCB), and cantilever beam enclosed notch (CBEN). The latter was developed specifically for this study and is described in detail. A mixed mode specimen is also described. Results from both static and fatigue tests are discussed in terms of fracture mechanics values.

Book excerpt: This paper investigates the roles Mode I (opening mode) and Mode II (inplane shear) strain-energy release rates (GI and GII, respectively), play in inducing delamination growth under static and fatigue loading. Double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens were used for pure Mode I tests. Cracked lap shear (CLS) specimens were used for mixed-mode tests. All specimens were fabricated using T300/5208 graphite/epoxy. Delaminations were introduced during fabrication by inserting folded Kapton films between selected plies. Delaminations were located between two 0° plies in an attempt to inhibit delamination growth across plies into adjacent interfaces. The critical Mode I strain-energy release rate, GIc, was obtained from static DCB tests. Static tests on mixed-mode CLS specimens measured the total strain-energy release rate, which was broken into GI and GII components using a geometrically nonlinear finite-element analysis. By incorporating these values of GI and GII, and GIc from static DCB test results, into an assumed failure criterion, the critical Mode II strain energy release rate (GIIc) was computed.

The facesheets of the specimens were 350 mm long and 50 mm wide and had layups of either [[theta]0], [±[theta]/0]s or [0/[theta]]s with [theta] varying from 0° to 90°. Out of the specimens tested, 165 were virgin specimens. These allowed the test article and test method to be evaluated and provided a data base of stress-strain and fracture behavior for use in this and future investigations. Furthermore, the uniaxial sandwich column proved to be an excellent characterization specimen. Delaminations were manufactured into 135 specimens, all with a layup of either [±60/0]s or [0/±60]s, by placing a Teflon fabric insert at a ply interface prior to curing. Both through-width and elliptical delaminations were used. The elliptical delaminations had an aspect ratio between 1/4 and 4. The longitudinal length of the delaminations varied between 3.2 mm and 25.4 mm. The buckling and growth behavior was monitored using strain gages, edge replication techniques, and moire interferometry. The growth of delaminations placed at the first ply interface of [0/±60]s specimens showed no dependence on the original delamination size after an initial "break in". Delaminations at the first ply interface of [0/±60]s] specimens did not grow prior to final failure. Delaminitions at the second ply interface of [0/±60]s specimens indicate a strong interaction between in-plane and out-of-plane failure mechanisms which lead to a complication of the failure process. Based on the experimental data, the concept of an inherent delamination size is introduced and suggested to be on the order of a 2 mm diameter circle. A model is introduced which incorporates the interply matrix layer as an elastic foundation, thus more accurately representing the boundary constraint at the delamination tip. Both one- and two-dimensional buckling predictions are performed which yield the interlaminar normal stresses in the matrix region. A maximum interlaminar normal stress criterion is applied to an averaged stress to predict the growth point and the incremental delamination growth. The effect of the foundation is to lower the predicted buckling stress by 10% in the one-dimensional model and by more than 17% in the two-dimensional model. Moreover, the progressive growth model predicts the successive perimeters of a general delamination. The inclusion of the matrix layer acting as elastic foundation greatly refines the prediction methods and yields a greater understanding of the mechanisms involved in failure via delamination buckling and growth.

In order to improve the interlaminar fracture toughness, the concept of "interlayer" has been applied to thermoset composite materials. In the present paper, the static and fatigue interlaminar fracture characteristics of a interlayer toughened carbon/epoxy, T800H/3900-2, were examined and compared with those of a thermoplastic composite, APC2, as a reference.

Book excerpt: This book celebrates the relaunch of the African Pollen Database, presents state-of-the-art of modern and ancient pollen data from sub-Saharan Africa, and promotes Open Access science. Pollen grains are powerful tools for the study of past vegetation dynamics because they preserve well within sedimentary deposits and have a huge diversity in ornamentation that allows different taxa to be determined. The reconstruction of past vegetation from the examination of ancient pollen records thus can be used to characterize the nature of past landscapes (e.g. abundance of forests vs. grasslands), provide insights into changes in biodiversity, and gain empirical evidence of vegetation response to climatic change and human activity. In this, the 35th Volume of "Palaeoecology of Africa", we bring together new data and extensive synthetic reviews to provide novel insights into the relationships between human evolution, human activity, climate change and vegetation dynamics during the Quaternary, the last 2.6 million years. Current and ongoing climate and land-use change is exerting pressure on modern vegetation formations and threatening the livelihoods and wellbeing of many peoples in Africa. In this book the focus is on the Quaternary because it is during this geological period that the modern vegetation formations developed into their current configurations against a backdrop of high magnitude global climate change (glacial-interglacial cycles), human evolution, and a growing human land-use footprint. In this book the latest information is presented and collated from around the African continent to parameterize past vegetation states, identify the drivers of vegetation change, and assess the vegetation resilience to change. To achieve this research from two broad themes are covered: (i) the present is the key to the past (i.e. studies which improve our understanding of modern environments so that we can better interpret evidence from the past), and (ii) the past is the key to the future (i.e. studies which unlock information on how and why vegetation changed in the past so one can better anticipate trajectories of future change). This Open Access book will provide a strong foundation for future research exploring past ecological, environmental and climatic change within Africa and the surrounding islands. The book is organized regionally (covering western, eastern, central, and southern Africa) and it contains specialized articles focused on particular topics (such as modern pollen-vegetation relationships and fire as a driver of vegetation change), as well as regional and pan-African syntheses drawing together decades of research to assess key scientific questions (including the role of climate in driving vegetation change and the role of vegetation change in human evolution). These articles will be useful to students and teachers from high school to the highest level of university who are interested in the origins and dynamics of vegetation in Africa. Furthermore, it is also meant to provide societally relevant information that can act as an inspiration for the development of sustainable management practices for the future.

Book excerpt: The Institute for Amorphous Studies was founded in 1982 as the international center for the investigation of amorphous mate rials. It has since played an important role in promoting the und er standing of disordered matter in general. An Institute lecture series on "Fundamentals of Amorphous Materials and Devices" was held during 1982-83 with distinguished speakers from universities and industry. These events were free and open to the public ,and were attended by many representatives of the scientific community. The lectures themselves were highly successful inasmuch as they provided not only formal instruction but also an opportunity for vigorous and stimulating debate. That last element could not be captured within the pages of a book I but the lectures concentrated on the latest advances in the field I which is why their essential contents are he re reproduced in collective form. Together they constitute an interdisciplinary status report of the field. The speakers brought many different viewpoints and a variety of back ground experiences io bear on the problems involved I but though language and conventions vary I the essential unity of the concerns is very clear I as indeed are the ultimate benefits of the many-sided approach.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis· seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) *at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac· tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 20 (thesis year 1975) a total of 10,374 theses titles from 28 Canadian and 239 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. The organization of Volume 20 is identical to that of past years. It consists of theses titles arranged by discipline and by university within each discipline.
