Book excerpt: The purpose and overall goal of the study is to further develop an understanding of the degree to which Information Systems project managers have implemented risk management planning, identification, evaluation and strategies within projects. The population selected for study consisted of 651 Information Systems Development (ISD) project managers who are responsible for managing the ISD components of projects who are members of the Project Management Institute Information Systems Specific Interest Group (PMI-ISSIG). With almost 90,000 members worldwide, PMI is the leading nonprofit professional association in the area of Project Management. The survey was constructed using the Project Risk Management Processes Checklist to determine the nature of risk management processes utilized within ISD projects. As well, the survey was development using the Risk Management Maturity Checklist for the purposes of constructing questions to assess the degree to which risk project management activities are occurring as well as the level of risk-maturity associated with these efforts. The research design selected for the study was an exploratory survey design. The implementation of an exploratory survey design permits the researcher to explore and discover relationships among a large number of variables within a study. The main purpose is to establish whether two variables are related, and if so, establish the direction of the observed relationship. Using comparisons of means, it was found that on average, both years experience and education level effected how respondents viewed risk management strategies. In general, as education increased and as years experience increased, respondents thought that risk management strategies were being employed more often. It appears that when upper management and clients were involved in the implementation of risk management techniques, those techniques were far more likely to be implemented across the board.

Book excerpt: Reduce or prevent risk failure losses with new and emerging technologies Rogues of Wall Street analyzes the recent risk failures and errors that have overwhelmed Wall Street for the past decade. Written by a veteran risk, compliance, and governance specialist, this book helps bank leaders and consultants identify the tools they need to effectively manage operational risk. Citing different types of risk events such as: Rogue and Insider Trading, cyber security, AML, the Mortgage Crisis, and other major events, chapters in the first half of the book detail each operational risk type along with its causative and contributing factors. The second half of the book takes an overarching approach to the tools and solutions available to financial institutions to manage such events in the future. From technology, to culture, to governance, and more, this book does more than simply identify the problem—it provides real-world solutions with actionable insight. Expert discussion identifies the tools financial institutions have at their disposal, and how these tools can be leveraged to create an environment in which catastrophic events are prevented or mitigated. In-depth insight from an industry specialist provides thought-provoking guidance for leaders seeking more effective risk management, and specifically addresses how to: Analyze major operational risk incidents and their underlying causes Investigate the tools that allow organizations to prevent and mitigate catastrophic events Learn how culture and governance can be optimized to support effective risk management Identify ways in which cognitive technologies could help your firm avoid losses Cognitive technologies have the potential to revolutionize the way business is done; eliminating the speed/cost/quality trade-off, these new and emerging tools are heralding the next leap in the evolution of risk management. Rogues of Wall Street shows you how bring these tools into your organization, and how they can contribute to your financial success.

Based on Knight's PhD dissertation, this 1921 work, balancing theory with fact to come to stunning insights, is a distinct pleasure to read. FRANK H. Book excerpt: Fundamental societal changes resulted from the necessity of people to get organized in mining, transporting, processing, and circulating the heavy metals and their follow-up products, which in consequence resulted in a differentiation of society into diversified professions and even societal strata. Heavy metals are highly demanded technological materials, which drive welfare and progress of the human society, and often play essential metabolic roles. However, their eminent toxicity challenges the field of chemistry, physics, engineering, cleaner production, electronics, metabolomics, botany, biotechnology, and microbiology in an interdisciplinary and cross-sectorial manner. Today, all these scientific disciplines are called to dedicate their efforts in a synergistic way to avoid exposure of heavy metals into the eco- and biosphere, to reliably monitor and quantify heavy metal contamination, and to foster the development of novel strategies to remediate damage caused by heavy metals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some say that private law ought to correct wrongs or to protect rights. Others say that private law ought to maximise social welfare or to minimise social cost. In this book, Emmanuel Voyiakis claims that private law ought to make our responsibilities to others depend on the opportunities we have to affect how things will go for us. Drawing on the work of HLA Hart and TM Scanlon, he argues that private law principles that require us to bear certain practical burdens in our relations with others are justified as long as those principles provide us with certain opportunities to choose what will happen to us, and having those opportunities is something we have reason to value. The book contrasts this 'value-of-choice' account with its wrong- and social cost-based rivals, and applies it to familiar problems of contract and tort law, including whether liability should be negligence-based or stricter; whether insurance should matter in the allocation of the burden of repair; how far private law should make allowance for persons of limited capacities; when a contract term counts as 'unconscionable' or 'unfair'; and when tort law should hold a person vicariously liable for another's mistakes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As knowledge economies become increasingly important around the world, it is essential that organizations are able to transform their knowledge into a competitive advantage. This textbook offers an interdisciplinary approach to knowledge management written specifically for postgraduate students in business and management schools. Knowledge Management presents classic and advanced concepts, models and frameworks using a clear logical structure, which covers building knowledge competence, the knowledge lifecycle, and integration of knowledge management with business decision making. An overall framework illustrates links between chapters and ensures readers can gain a body of actionable knowledge rather than learning isolated, uncontextualized topics. Based on cutting-edge research findings and covering the most advanced IT and IS technologies, this book emphasises the need for knowledge management to span boundaries across organizations, supply chains and partnerships, rather than being limited to individual learning and sharing within businesses. Knowledge Management is international in scope and includes real world case studies and role play scenarios to show how theories are applied in practice, and "think back" and "critique discussion" questions to encourage reflective learning and critical thinking. This indispensable text provides a dynamic picture of the evolution of knowledge management and demonstrates its full potential to enable better business decisions. Accompanying online resources include PowerPoint slides for lecturers and exercise questions for students.
