Book excerpt: Thermal remediation involves heating subsurface environments and collecting fluids in order to recover contaminants such as tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and trichloroethylene (TCE). While increasing subsurface temperature can lead to changes in the distribution of contaminants between the solid, liquid, and gas phases, there is also an increased potential for PCE and TCE to degrade. This work was performed to determine the rate of PCE and TCE degradation and products formed in laboratory-scale experiments designed to simulate thermal remediation conditions. The conditions during transport of gas-phase TCE were simulated using flow-through experiments in the temperature range from 60 to 800C. Degradation of TCE was not evident at temperatures of less than 240C; however, chloroacetic acids, which comprised less than 0.1% of the influent TCE on a carbon basis, were detected. At temperatures greater than 300C, TCE readily degraded where the identities of the degradation products were a function of oxygen and water content. With oxygen present, TCE degraded to form CO, phosgene, CO2 with minor amounts of hexachloroethane, PCE, and carbon tetrachloride. Increasing the amount of water vapor was found to decrease the amount of TCE degraded. Vapor recovery systems used during thermal treatments are anticipated to capture these TCE degradation products. However, the amount of missing carbon ... in experiments completed at 800C makes the prospect of recovering all TCE degradation products doubtful. Experiments were conducted using hermetically sealed ampules to simulate heating dissolved phase PCE and TCE over periods of up to 75 days. At 120C, the first-order TCE degradation half-life was 330 days and the degradation products included CO and CO2, glycolate, formate, and chloride. The rate of TCE disappearance was increased with the addition of 1% (wt.) goethite, which suggests that the presence of iron bearing soil minerals can increase rates of TCE degradation during thermal treatment. In contaminated field samples, TCE was found to degrade to form cis-1,2-dichloroethylene at 95C coincident with the formation of hydrogen gas. Degradation of PCE was not evident in field samples or in deionized water and is not expected to degrade during thermal remediation at temperatures below 95C.

Due to the high cost and uneven performance of traditional remediation technologies, monitored natural attenuation is emerging as a new technology for ground water remediation of pollutants such as these. In addition, there is growing interest in active remediation technologies that employ abiotic minerals. PCE and TCE are susceptible to reductive dechlorination by microorganisms as well as reduced minerals such as iron sulfide (FeS). Unlike biological reductive dechlorination, which often results in accumulation of harmful intermediates such as cis 1,2-dichloroethylene (cis-DCE) and vinyl chloride (VC), abiotic mineral-mediated dechlorination of PCE and TCE tends to result in complete transformation to non-toxic products such as acetylene. To more accurately apply natural attenuation and other remediation technologies, a greater understanding of the geochemical factors affecting the rates of purely abiotic reductive dechlorination of PCE and TCE is needed. Additional tools are also needed to determine whether or not abiotic reductive dechlorination is occurring at a particular site, and its relative importance compared to microbial dechlorination under a variety of geochemical conditions.

With the passage in 1980 of the Comprehensive Envir- mental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), commonly known as Sup- fund, it became the law of the land to remediate these sites. The U. S. Department of Defense (DoD), the nation’s largest industrial organization, also recognized that it too had a legacy of contaminated sites. Historic operations at Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps facilities, ranges, manufacturing sites, shipyards, and depots had resulted in widespread contamination of soil, groundwater, and sediment. While Superfund began in 1980 to focus on remediation of heavily contaminated sites largely abandoned or neglected by the private sector, the DoD had already initiated its Installation Restoration Program in the mid-1970s. In 1984, the DoD began the Defense Environmental Restoration Program (DERP) for contaminated site assessment and remediation. Two years later, the U. S. Congress codified the DERP and directed the Secretary of Defense to carry out a concurrent program of research, development, and demonstration of innovative remediation technologies. As chronicled in the 1994 National Research Council report, “Ranking Hazardous-Waste Sites for Remedial Action,” our early estimates on the cost and suitability of existing techn- ogies for cleaning up contaminated sites were wildly optimistic. Original estimates, in 1980, projected an average Superfund cleanup cost of a mere $3.

Phytoremediation is the use of vegetation for the treatment of contaminated soils, sediments, and water. The potential for phytoremediation of chlorinated solvents has been demonstrated at the Savannah River Site (SRS) Miscellaneous Chemical Basin, Southern Sector of A/M Area and TNX/D-Area. Recent characterization work at the SRS has delineated widespread plumes (1-2 miles) of low concentration (40 ppb -10-ppm range) trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE) contaminated groundwater. Phytoremediation deployments are underway for TCE and PCE phytoremediation in select SRS areas. Phytoremediation appears to be an excellent technology to intercept and control plume migration. The ongoing Southern Sector treatability study is part of a multi-year field study of SRS seepline-soil systems maintained under saturated conditions. The primary focus is on determining how trees, seepline groundcover, soil microbial communities, and geochemical and surface-volatilization processes affect TCE and PCE in contaminated groundwater that flows through surface seepline areas. Therefore, FY00 represented an initial acclimation phase for soil and plant systems and will facilitate examination of seepline phyto- and bioactivity in subsequent growth season in FY01.
