Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I let the fear aside, I faced the ghosts that I loaded for many years, I got brave going over the major and complicated passages of my life from childhood until my first experiences of encounters with older age, I wanted to transfer to paper everything that brought me back memories, before my eyes get tired more than are now and before my memory refuses to remember and my conscience distorts the reality. In these pages is no intention of any teaching, I personally learned from my own stories, of my own achievements and failures but it was also necessary to mix my memories with experience over the years that life has given me. Obviously there are situations that I would not repeat and others that I would like to have the opportunity to return to the past to remedy them, as it is impossible to do one or the other I should accept my past as it is and without regrets. Passages that I rescued and snatch not exempt of consequences from the depths of my heart and conscience, passages that I wanted and promised a day to forget, what obviously I did not, perhaps for good. Not everything on these pages is full of joy or total sadness, it is simply life. Thanks to those who are and also, were part of my memories and experiences. Writing those passages I wanted to also involve my wife and my children, mainly in gratitude for all the happiness, help, understanding, passion and tolerance that I have received from them. For my own sanity I have been cautious not to distort reality, I only mixed objectivity with some touches of fantasy by the simple fact of protecting people who were and are close to me, to avoid running over to those who cannot defend themselves and they will never know that they are part of a story, my story. They will have to respond or be answered, each one according to their own actions, I have not tried to judge or be judged either accuser or accused. My intention has been to just remember and stamping my comments for the moment lived, stage by stage with the mentality of the passing of the years. Evidently not everything regarding my life is here, it would have been tedious, slow and tiring adventures to write and full of secrets that I would have not wanted to share. I do not seek advice on what I should have done or I should stop doing nor giving advice to any of the people named here, the reason why these pages do not contain proper names with the exception of a couple of them. We are all loaded up with secrets and sins and facing them is the true value of life. Forgiveness, when it exists, must be sincere and without conditions. I hope, a day be forgiven by those with whom I acted unjustly.

Book excerpt: ...... perhaps I never sensed everything that we had really lost because we always looked around us, there were many who had lost more than us, there were many who had lost everything and others who had lost nothing but were no longer among us ...... my head was spinning again, I felt a very strong knock at the back of my head, again lights spun incessantly around me and the tires squeal against the pavement but now with a smell very strange, a warm smell of rubber and blood. Minutes, seconds or fractions of seconds, I don't know, it seemed an eternity and from one moment to another everything was calm, just the smell was still in the air .....

Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE 2015 BRAM STOKER AWARD FOR SUPERIOR ACHIEVEMENT IN A NOVEL A chilling thriller that brilliantly blends psychological suspense and supernatural horror, reminiscent of Stephen King's The Shining, Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House, and William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist. The lives of the Barretts, a normal suburban New England family, are torn apart when fourteen-year-old Marjorie begins to display signs of acute schizophrenia. To her parents’ despair, the doctors are unable to stop Marjorie’s descent into madness. As their stable home devolves into a house of horrors, they reluctantly turn to a local Catholic priest for help. Father Wanderly suggests an exorcism; he believes the vulnerable teenager is the victim of demonic possession. He also contacts a production company that is eager to document the Barretts’ plight. With John, Marjorie’s father, out of work for more than a year and the medical bills looming, the family agrees to be filmed, and soon find themselves the unwitting stars of The Possession, a hit reality television show. When events in the Barrett household explode in tragedy, the show and the shocking incidents it captures become the stuff of urban legend. Fifteen years later, a bestselling writer interviews Marjorie’s younger sister, Merry. As she recalls those long ago events that took place when she was just eight years old, long-buried secrets and painful memories that clash with what was broadcast on television begin to surface—and a mind-bending tale of psychological horror is unleashed, raising vexing questions about memory and reality, science and religion, and the very nature of evil.

Book excerpt: This "graceful, captivating" (New York Times Book Review) story from a singular new talent paints a portrait of grief and the search for meaning as told through the prism of three generations of her Chinese American family—perfect for readers of Helen Macdonald and Elizabeth Alexander. Kat Chow has always been unusually fixated on death. She worried constantly about her parents dying---especially her mother. A vivacious and mischievous woman, Kat's mother made a morbid joke that would haunt her for years to come: when she died, she'd like to be stuffed and displayed in Kat's future apartment in order to always watch over her. After her mother dies unexpectedly from cancer, Kat, her sisters, and their father are plunged into a debilitating, lonely grief. With a distinct voice that is wry and heartfelt, Kat weaves together a story of the fallout of grief that follows her extended family as they emigrate from China and Hong Kong to Cuba and America. Seeing Ghosts asks what it means to reclaim and tell your family’s story: Is writing an exorcism or is it its own form of preservation? The result is an extraordinary new contribution to the literature of the American family, and a provocative and transformative meditation on who we become facing loss. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely volume brings together an international team of leading scholars to explore the ways that women responded to situations of immense deprivation, need, and victimization under Hitler's dictatorship. Paying acute attention to the differences that gender made, Women Defying Hitler examines the forms of women's defiance, the impact these women had, and the moral and ethical dilemmas they faced. Several essays also address the special problems of the memory and historiography of women's history during World War II, and the book features standpoints of historians as well as the voices of survivors and their descendants. Notably, this book also serves as a guide for human behaviour under extremely difficult conditions. The book is relevant today for challenging discrimination against women and for its nuanced exploration of the conditions minorities face as outspoken protagonists of human rights issues and as resisters of discrimination. From this perspective the voices being empowered in this book are clear examples of the importance of protest by women in forcing a totalitarian regime to pause and reconsider its options for the moment. In revealing so, Women Defying Hitler ultimately foregrounds that women rescuers and resisters were and are of great continuing consequence.

Book excerpt: Marius Barnard is best known as a member of the pioneering medical team that performed the world’s first human heart transplant at Groote Schuur Hospital in 1967, with his brother Chris. But his achievements extended into other spheres. He was an active anti-apartheid campaigner and MP for the Progressive Federal Party, he worked to improve cardiac surgery standards behind the Iron Curtain and globally, and he played a leading role in the creation of critical illness insurance - his invention, and one that has directly benefited the sick around the world. From humble beginnings as the son of missionary parents in the dusty Karoo town of Beaufort West to his position as one of the world’s leading cardiac surgeons, Marius Barnard’s story is a fascinating and remarkable chronicle of personal determination and courage. It is one of few first-hand accounts of the inaugural human heart transplant and its far-reaching repercussions, both in the world of medicine and in the private lives of its pioneers. In this sincere and deeply personal memoir, Barnard speaks frankly about his relationships with his brother, his colleagues and his adversaries, and describes with humility his fourteen-year struggle with cancer. With candour, authenticity and charm, Defining Moments presents the formidable challenges and spellbinding successes in the life of this international medical icon.
