This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book arose from a symposium titled 'Transition Metal Carbides and Nitrides: Preparation, Properties, and Reactivity' organized by Jae Sung Lee, Masatoshi Nagai and myself. The symposium was part of the 1995 Congress of Pacific Rim Chemical Societies, held in Honolulu, Hawaii between December 17-22, 1995. The meeting was the first major conference to exclusively address the theme of metal carbides and nitrides, and brought together many of the major researchers in the field. Over 50 scientists and engineers reported their latest findings in five sessions of presentations and discussions. The book closely follows the topics covered in the conference: Theory of bonding Structure and composition Catalytic properties Physical properties New methods of preparation Spectroscopy and microscopy The book is unique in its coverage. It provides a general introduction to the properties and nature of the materials, but also covers their latest applications in a wide variety of fields. It should thus be of interest to both experts and nonexperts in the fields of material science, solid-state chemistry, physics, ceramics engineering, and catalysis. The first chapter gives an overview, and many of the chapters provide summaries of advanced topics. All contributions were peer-reviewed.

Book Synopsis Modeling of Brittle to Ductile Transition in BCC Metals by : Keyur Kashinath Karandikar
Download or read book Modeling of Brittle to Ductile Transition in BCC Metals written by Keyur Kashinath Karandikar and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brittle to ductile transition is an important mechanical property that is observed in metals, especially in those which have Body Centered Cubic structure. We present a framework that describes this transition by linking the dislocation dynamics with the resulting mechanical behavior and constitutive equations. Two different models based on dislocation theory are developed and applied are applied to Alpha-Iron and Tantalum monocrystals, One is a stress ratio model that is dependent on dislocation nucleation and the other is an Activation energy ratio model based on dislocation mobility. Both the models predict the Brittle to ductile transformation temperature and its dependence on various strain rates and temperatures. These models are compared and are accordingly found to be suitable for different strain rate and temperature conditions in terms of accuracy. The study highlights the possible significance as well as the applications of these ratios in dislocation and plasticity study of the respective materials. The conformity obtained between input and output in the models is predicted to be useful for experimentalists attempting to extract microscopic data from deformation tests on BCC single crystals.
Book Synopsis Investigation of the Ductile-Brittle Transition for Certain BCC and HCP Metals by : R. W. Armstrong
Download or read book Investigation of the Ductile-Brittle Transition for Certain BCC and HCP Metals written by R. W. Armstrong and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general purpose of this research program has been two-fold: (1) to determine the brittle fracture characteristics, mainly, of several steel and titanium materials; and, (2) to develop via appropriate constitutive relations a detailed description of the ductile-brittle transition behaviour which is exhibited by certain BCC and HCP metals. The brittle fracture behaviour of these materials was directly measured by tensile testing at 4.2K. Compression tests at 4.2K were performed, also, so as to establish the nature of whatever plastic deformation behaviour might be induced in the absence of applied tensile stresses.

Book Synopsis The Effect of Fabrication History and Microstructure on the Mechanical Properties of Refractory Metals and Alloys by : Albert G. Imgram
Download or read book The Effect of Fabrication History and Microstructure on the Mechanical Properties of Refractory Metals and Alloys written by Albert G. Imgram and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the present knowledge concerning the relationship among fabrication history, metallurgical structure, and the mechanical properites of the refractory metals columbium, tantalum, bolybdenum, and tungsten, and their alloys. These are the refractory metals currently reveiveing the most attention for aerospace applications, and are therefore the materials considered in this survey. The report is organized into three main sections, titled ''Fabrication'', ''Microstructure and Alloying'', and ''Interstitial Impurities''. The data presented were selected as those which best illustrate the topics discussed. Descriptions of the metaljurgical principles involved are included. Suggestions for optimizing mechanical properties by controlling metallurgical structure are made where possible. (Author).
