Book excerpt: Have you ever kept a secret, one strategically hidden, unknown, or unseen? If discovered, the secret could destroy someone. What if as a child, you were sexually abused? Deflowered Lyric shines the light on sexual abuse through glimpsing the childhoods of three main characters. Their journey through life discloses brokenness and strength intertwined together and expressed in a poetic prose. The enthralling story of their tangled lives reveals the struggles shared from their experiences of sexual abuse. Uncovered are the stark truths of lives touched by abuse with graphic depictions of sexual assault and the resulting emotional turmoil. Each chapter of the book starts with a lyrical poem to introduce the life stages of each character. Although the topic of child sexual abuse is a somewhat forbidden and a hidden conversation, Deflowered Lyric introduces the reader’s to a cadence, which marches towards healing through exposing and acknowledging the secret sin to forgiving the reprobate. A strong religious faith by the character, Lyric provides the roadmap to recovery. Written with blunt, honest prose, Deflowered Lyric raises awareness to the pain and fear victims of childhood sexual abuse suffer, and calls readers to action; demanding protection for children. Deflowered Lyric has received the distinct honor of Award-Winning Finalist in the “Fiction: African-American” category of the 2014 USA Best Book Awards”.

Book Synopsis Khmer Women on the Move by : Annuska Derks
Download or read book Khmer Women on the Move written by Annuska Derks and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2008-04-11 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a fascinating ethnography about young Khmer women moving to the city to work in the garment factories, in prostitution, and as street sellers. The author makes good use of new theoretical approaches in anthropology that focus on negotiation and creativity in situations of rapid change. The result is not only a welcome new book on post-war Cambodia but an important addition to the literature on women, migration, and labor in Southeast Asia and the world. —Judy Ledgerwood, Northern Illinois University Khmer Women on the Move offers a fascinating ethnography of young Cambodian women who move from the countryside to work in Cambodia’s capital city, Phnom Penh. Female migration and urban employment are rising, triggered by Cambodia’s transition from a closed socialist system to an open market economy. This book challenges the dominant views of these young rural women—that they are controlled by global economic forces and national development policies or trapped by restrictive customs and Cambodia’s tragic history. The author shows instead how these women shape and influence the processes of change taking place in present-day Cambodia. Based on field research among women working in the garment industry, prostitution, and street trading, the book explores the complex interplay between their experiences and actions, gender roles, and the broader historical context. The focus on women involved in different kinds of work allows new insight into women’s mobility, highlighting similarities and differences in working conditions and experiences. Young women’s ability to utilize networks of increasing size and complexity allows them to move into and between geographic and social spaces that extend far beyond the village context. Women’s mobility is further expressed in the flexible patterns of behavior that young rural women display when trying to fulfill their own "modern" aspirations along with their family obligations and cultural ideals.

Book excerpt: Where many see the Bible as the pathway to Heaven, others say it should be covered in a brown paper bag because it is so, so filthy. There are hundreds of sex acts implied in the first book of the bible. How has nobody ever described how each of them would have played out in biblical language? If the writers and translators of the Bible had been a little less prudish we might have an entirely different relationship between sex and religion than we have now. In Genesis there is sex before marriage, threesomes, incest, group sex, kinky fetish cuckolding, gay sex and more. Isn't it time that you read the Bible for the dirty parts? Using the seminal King James Bible in its Elizabethan English as spring board,"Genesis Deflowered" makes the beginning of the Bible come out as a sexy, readable and fun erotic novel. "Genesis Deflowered " equal parts holy scripture and blaspheming scandal

Book Synopsis Biochemistry and Physiology of Plant Hormones by : T.C. Moore
Download or read book Biochemistry and Physiology of Plant Hormones written by T.C. Moore and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biochemistry and Physiology of Plant Hormones is intended primarily as a textbook or major reference for a one-term ;intermediate-Ievel or ad vanced course dealing with hormonal regulation of growth and develop ment of seed plants for students majoring in biology, botany, and applied botany fields such as agronomy, forestry, and horticulture. Additionally, it should be useful to others who wish to become familiar with the topic in relation to their principal student or professional interests in related fields. It is assumed that readers will have a background in fundamental biology, plant physiology, and biochemistry. The dominant objective of Biochemistry and Physiology of Plant Hor mones is to summarize, in a reasonably balanced and comprehensive way, the current state of our fundamental knowledge regarding the major kinds of hormones and the phytochrome pigment system. Written pri marily for students rather than researchers, the book is purposely brief. Biochemical aspects have been given priority intentionally, somewhat at the expense of physiological considerations. There are extensive citations ofthe literature-both old and recent-but, it is hoped, not so much docu mentation as to make the book difficult to read. The specific choices of publications to cite and illustrations to present were made for different reasons, often to illustrate historical development, sometimes to illustrate ideas that later proved invalid, occasionally to exemplify conflicting hy potheses, and most often to illustrate the current state of our knowledge about hormonal phenomena.

Book Synopsis Beyond the Exotic by : Amira El-Azhary Sonbol
Download or read book Beyond the Exotic written by Amira El-Azhary Sonbol and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2005-06-14 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most research has accepted stereotypical images of Muslim women, treating their outward manifestations, such as veiling, as passive and oppressive. Muslim women have been depicted as different, and by exoticizing (orientalizing) them—or Islamic society in general—“they” have been dealt with outside of general women’s history and regarded as having little to contribute to the writing of world history or to the life of their sisters worldwide. By approaching widely used sources with different questions and methodologies, and by using new or little-used material (with much primary research), this book redresses these deficiencies. Scholars revisit and reevaluate scripture and scriptural interpretation; church records involving non-Muslim women of the Arab world; archival court records dating from the present back to the Ottoman period; and the oral and material culture and its written record, including oral history, textbooks, sufi practices, and the politics of dress. By deconstructing the past, these scholars offer fresh perspectives on women’s roles and aspirations in Middle East societies.
